2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
I had to leave early but there was quite a bit going on today even though it was only Thursday. The first thing I noticed was there were quite a few veteran teams not playing today, but I can see why because of this year’s complex game. Also there were allot of high scoring matches, 540, 662, 487, and matches like that (seriously I thought they had that fixed). And autonomous was dominated by only a few teams.
Teams that looked great: Triplets: All three of them looked great, especially 1114 which scored 10/10 in auto one match and went on to make 23 shots :ahh: ! 201 FEDS: they have a robot similar to 223 (pink) and were looking good when I left 1528 I-Pirates: Also looking good with quite a few goals during the day. 66 B22 Flyers: Amazing robot with allot of scoring capabilities. 1 Juggernauts: Did see it shooting for the high goal at all today but it was amazing with the lower goals. 322 FIRE: Great little side goal robot that cleared the field of balls just about every time, although it can get a bit tippy when depositing balls into the goal if balls get under it. 47 CD: They were just getting into the game late in the day. Although I was surprised to see different drivers from the Teaser  These were just a few of the robots that stuck out in my mind. I was also surprised to see some vets like 67 only out once today and not make a single shot! But knowing them it will be fixed and working great by tomorrow. There weren’t as many robots falling over today which surprised me allot! And one last thing id like to note is that defense wasn’t as harsh as other Regionals (it is only Thursday though). Allot of backbot penalties today would have been given and then there was a huge difference in the time between when the buzzers sounded and when the periods actually changed. But this is shaping up to be one great competition. |

For those who are interested but can't make it in person, EMU is webcasting Great Lakes Regional. Go to www.emich.edu and check out the link under EMU News. If you have trouble, I've posted a more detailed message on how to pick up the streams under the Webcasting thread.

Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
It was really rough today compared to previous years practice rounds. Usually teams dont worry too much about defense and get overly involved in practice rounds...but there were some good push and shove matches...as well as a few over turned robots.

Numbers I can remember off the top of my head: -322, what a great ball gathering robot. -33 was interesting to say the least -####, small robot with no top at first, just drove around. -I made a note in my scouting folder for a great robot with a great autonomous and great strategy overall. It had a top shooter and nice bucket and feeder. Cannot really bring other robots to mind that were not already mentioned. Looking forward to tomorrow morning with the Governor stopping by and a great competition. -Joe PS: magic players from 201, I will bring a deck tomorrow. Be ready! ;) |
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
So I'll revive this for today's opinions.
All that I can say about the Triplets is wow. They absolutely dominated every match that they were in and many times went 10/10 in auto shooting. Wow It seems like a lot of the classic powerhouse teams are being overshadowed by some of the lesser known teams. I think that this is good for the lesser known teams. A lot of teams that I had never heard of before really impressed me today. 541 and 1114 and I'm sorry, I forgot the number of the other team!, were awesome in the match where they were 90 points just at the end of auto and ended up with 106. They even scored for their opponents, raising their score to 60 qualifying points. Overall, interesting competition, most of the penalties were just for silly things (soooooo many for human players leaving their box!). There was really only one robot that I saw out there just trying to bash everyone, so I like that. I was really hoping that the required defense wouldn't turn the game into BattleBots. I hate to see something that teams worked so hard on just get ruined. |

Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
today went well, but the only thing i hated about today was those crazy penalties. we had a penalty in just about every one of our matches we even got DQ. Our penalties was offsides (they gave us an 20pt pen. for that even though we was on the other side for abot 2 secs.) we got DQ for our robot going into the corner goal (which they offically said it went in APPROX. 3 inches, when it was less than an 1/2 inch). but our last 2 matches we had we acutally won. penalties suck Lets just hope Saturday can be a little better for us. to make things even better about today was that our bus was to pick up the kids at 5pm, the funny part about that is that it didn't come till 730pm :ahh:

Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
Today was not a good day for me. It all started with our first match which we were considered off sides even though we were clearly onsides and right next to the ramp, seven or so teams come up to us and asked us about that and we really could only tell them that we were supposedly off sides. They offered video of the match but because of the rules no match would be disputed. We would have won that match too... Ill try and leave it behind me. But it didn't stop there. We were sooo off with scouting today. There were quite a few matches that went unscouted and the data we were getting was way off (like both alliances winning...). Not a very good day for me.
But overall I had allot of fun today watching the matches and seeing al of the robots and what they can do. There was a big difference from today and yesterday. Allot of teams that didn't do much yesterday came out of nowhere and were doing great. If there is one robot in this competition that can take it all, it has to be 1114. Although it is the same as 1503 and 1680, 1114 seems to have allot better drivers. As was said above they were able so score 106 in a match and then go and score 60 for their opponent. They knew what they were doing. Also 451 is a great team this year. They shoot from on top of the ramp and they do so very well. But allot of the lesser knowns are getting some much deserved attention and are actually over shadowing the well knowns. It will be an interesting day tomorrow. I can't wait to see what’s going to happen! |
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
The thing I find amazing is that the alliances fail to protect their shooter. Eg. 1114 is getting hammered while their partners wander aimlessly about. Maybe that's a bad example because 1114 takes the hits and keeps on scoring. (ALA - Energizer batteries in a Timex watch) and not all their partners abandon them. Gee! I wonder which they'll pick?
EDIT - add reminder: < selfish, selfish, selfish > = = = < stupid, stupid, stupid > |
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
Alliance selections are done, i know 1503 picked 1114, but the contrast on my screen wont pick up who the third choice was.
Thanks to Conor, here are the picks, well a few of them. (12:41:36) Conor: 33-201-1680----3rd seed (12:42:01) Conor: 1549-66-68-----4th seed (12:42:11) Conor: 1-279-47----5th seed (12:42:30) Conor: i'm guessing 1503-1114-67----1st seed (12:43:25) Conor: 1015-27-65----8th seed |
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
the 1503-1114-67 alliance just put up 96 points. Only hitting 9 balls outta 20 in autonomous though. 1503's tread also popped off their right side drive, expecting a timeout.
|
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
1503-1114-67 just pulled out a squeaker it looks like, after losing autonomous, they came back in the last 10 seconds to take, what looks like right now, a 10 point win.
|
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
Looks like 1114-1503-67 just took their match with about 125 points.

I also have to send my congratulations to 1503, 1114 and 67. That was one powerful alliance and I am very happy to see two Canadian teams win the GLR. Well done!
On a bigger note, I am obligated to thank the judges who picked team 66 for the Chairman's award this year. I cannot express the feelings that I had before and after the announcement (tears were about ready to flow, no kidding) that we were picked. Nor can I thank you enough from the bottom of my heart. THANK YOU!!! -Joe |

Congrats to everyone who participated in the regional. GLR is probably one of, if not the toughest regionals to compete in and everyone did their best. Good Luck and see (hopefully) most of you in Atlanta :)
On a side note, does anybody know the songs played during Saturdays award ceremony? I have no idea what the names of some of them were...and I wanted to get them from the iTunes music store. |

Go figure, I have the same bet in place with my team. But we never win regionals, so I think my hair is safe. By the way, congrats to 1114 and 1503 at the GTR! Canada represent! Now can you defend your home turf at the GTR? As Honorary Canadians (TM), 48'd love to help you do that. :) Perhaps I shouldn't have posted that pic up above, then? Darn. Shooting myself in the foot again.......nah, it was worth it! |
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
Congrats to 1503, 1114, and 67. You guys were a great alliance and it was a great battle.
Hopefully we'll see you in Atlanta for a rematch... Again, congrats! |

Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
Great Lakes was definetly a fun regional. We won 5 out of 8, had quite a bit of problems, but we pulled through all the same. Lost in the qualifying matches to a great alliance. Congrats guys.
Congrats to the winners, awesome robots you all built. Congrats to Chairman's winners. It was kinda weird. I wasn't expecting to get it, not at all, but when they said that the team had been around for 8 years, my heart, I swore, it stopped! Cause thats how long we've been around too, and we were one of the eight teams that actually submitted. But, congrats to you, all the same. :-) The penaltys sucked. Some bad calls. I hope everyone had fun. |

Yup. Before the season, I promised that I'd shave my head if both 1114 & 1503 won a regional... I'll have it done before Waterloo for sure, and maybe even before I go to Detroit this weekend. As for the regional, what an amazing weekend. It seems like a lot of the teams were still in debug mode on Friday, but made big turn rounds on Saturday. Look out for 33 & 469 this season. With their turrets and camera aiming, look for them on Einstein in Atlanta. This robots have amazing potential. The game play was very physical. We had robots coming at us from every direction in the finals. If it wasn't for HOT clearing us some space, things would have been very different. Robots who need lots of space and time to shoot are going to have difficulty on Saturday afternoon. The amount of defence (Canadian English ;)) raises exponentially during the eliminations. Overall the Great Lakes Regional was a wonderful experience, and we look forward to defending our title next year. |
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
Team 815 would like to thank Team 469 and 451 again for requesting our participation in their alliance for the Great Lakes Regional. You turned a very frustrating competition into our Cinderella Story. A story that we will be telling over and over again.
Thanks again for believing in us. Team 815 Advanced Power Allen Park, Michigan 2006 Great Lakes Regional Finalist |
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
that was an awesome alliance.
469 and 451's scoring ability was awesome and 815's defensive capability rivaled 67's. they put up a good fight against team Canada good job <3 |
Re: 2006 Great Lakes Reigonal
Does anybody have the final leaderboards written down somewhere? I want to see how certain rival schools placed.

If you saw the rankings shown on the video screen follow the qualifying rounds, then you may have been misled - because they were wrong. For example, one team was 6-2-0 and the screen had them 5-2-1. A double check confirmed that the video had them wrong. Don't ask me how the video out can differ from reality. All I could say would be, "HATCH Happens!"
