2006 Silicon Valley Regional
Hey guys, just thought I'd start the Silicon Valley regional thread since its only three days away. (I'm so excited)
I know that the team list is on the FIRST website and everything, but I just wanted to know whos pumped for Silicon Valley this year! I think its gonna be a blast! Another thing I wanted to ask was who's planning on going to the team social Friday night? Jason Morrella posted an update about a month ago here announcing the return of the team social, but the FIRST official regional schedule doesn't have the social on it. Is the social still a go? An update would be very nice. Anyhow, I'm looking forward to the tough NorCal competition and hope to everyone there. Mike Corsetto |
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
We're pumped all right! Can't wait to play with you guys and all the other great teams at SVR! I've seen some of the robots, and it looks like tough competition.
|
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
Team 100 will be there.
And teams, if you bring a laptop with wireless capabilities, FIRST Scouting Network will be at SVR. Use it! |
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
Thats great the FIRST Scouting Network will be in use. I am interested in hearing how it is working.
|
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
well, we HOPE it will be in use...everything's in place, except we haven't received the software. In the case that it never gets running, we'll have a primitive backup (essentially web pages with the team's scouting info listed). We really, sincerely hope to get FSN working however.

Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
Since not all team got their LEDs, It is important for everyone to bring any extra LEDs (including last year's) To their regionals. FIRST has relaxed the requirement, but it makes everyone's job easier, including inspectors, refs, and anyone trying to debug hardware/software problems. Having LEDs makes the competition run faster for everyone. IF you have an extra set, please bring them to your regional, so that everyone can participate and enjoy the event with the best possible results.
I am Chief Robot Inspector at SVR and Sacramento - good luck all. |
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
FSN has been recieved, and should be up and running!
|
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
Just exactly where on the SJSU campus is the competition being held? A couple of the team members of 1147 and I are coming down to spy, err ahh, scout, ahh, I mean watch the competitions Saturday. We would love to lend a hand to anyone who might need it as well.
BTW, Nuttyman, I want to see your configuration of FSN. I got ours set for Davis/Sacramento and would love to see it in action before we actually put ours on the air. |

Anyone else watching the webcast?

1) They have a solid design, not over engineered, not prone to instability. 2) They have a well thought out STRATEGY for the game and they stick to it. 3) They have experience as a team. Those three aspects make them a winning team! Always have, always will! Are they undefeatable? Not at all. Find a $@#$@#$@#$@#$@# in their armour and you can beat them. It won't be easy, it will take commitment and sacrifice. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not attacking nor defending them. I am just expressing my admiration of their performance so far and my observations. Personally, I believe they are a team to emulate. I also would have no end of pride in my team for defeating them. Everyone loves to dethrone the top dog, but you might get bit in the process. |

Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
254 is amazing as usual, but oh man....
114 is rocking. Their robot is insane, it can move and shoot with their 2 axis turret. I would say that by far they have the most impressive robot out here. I talked to their guys and they did so much work on their shooter. Algorithms, testing, calibration, and now they very deservingly have the most impressive camara controlled system yet. Good luck to them tomorrow, along with everyone else. |

The competition at SVR has been great so far. We have had a couple very close matches and look forward to some very exciting elimination matches. Good luck everyone!! Mike C. BTW: 1072, your hopper is CRAZY. When I heard you guys could score 50 balls and keep them in a single file line, I was blown away. Your guy's bot is awsome. |
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
congrats to 254 and 114 so far and good luck to all the other teams tomorrow. I wish i could get up there to san jose and see you guys.
How's FSN working for everyone? |

The Cheesy Poofs are the terrorists of FIRST. The defense has to be perfect for 120 seconds. The Poofs only need to get loose for 5.
|
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
While this is the common saying, I'm not seeing any defense. You see 254 getting up the ramp with no resistance. We need some 195's and 177's out there

Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
If I recall correctly when I was down at SVR on thursday and friday, they were experimenting on the practice field in order to be able to shoot from the ground and not the ramp which is what they just did. I suspected a trump card in their hand.
While their strategy is successful, they are the only high scorer on their team which can lead to some problems if 254's robot was ever damaged. |

Great regional overall. Congrats to 192 for chairmans. Congrats on yet another victory for team 254. Is it just me, or do the drivers from 254 blow your mind? They were unbelievably accurate despite the VERY heavy defense. Simply amazing....

|
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
Am I the only one who noticed that the Poofs kept one trick up their sleeve? In all the previous matches, their autonomous mode was in low gear. For the FINAL match, they put it in high gear, and prevented 1280 from scoring in auto. VERY GOOD ADAPTATION! Congratulations to all teams, especially the award winners. We're really proud of our mentee, 1970, who were dead last and still kept the spirit up to win the Judges Award for day 2!
|
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
Looks as though we're not allowed to post unless we can spout happy talk? Might be worthwhile to step back and ask yourself why you need to resort to censorship to prevent discussion of issues that need to be addressed.
I thought it was a major insult to give the top award to a team that certainly did not embody the spirit of FIRST--unless FIRST strives to be the robotic counterpart to Enron. (Perhaps that IS the message here?) I would have been fine with Gunn getting the Comeback Team of the Year award. But the Chair award, as with many of the other awards, seemed to be based on politics. |

At the risk of derailing this thread completely…
Quote:
Saying a team doesn't embody the spirit of FIRST and that they're something related to a company whose executives (in the eyes of many) made a ton of money and left its employees with next to nothing sounds like a bunch of libel coming from someone who will not identify themselves. This whole topic (GRT last season) has been stricken from ChiefDelphi before and I wouldn't be surprised if your posts were deleted. I’m not as quick as some are to delete posts, so this post of mine may disappear in an attempt to purge your comments from the website. I’ve got no problem with that if other moderators feel it’s necessary, but you can rest assured that I won't be using my status as a moderator to keep you quiet on this topic. That's a decision for others to make who don't have a dog in this fight. There is no such thing as a Comeback Team of the Year Award. That's something you should take up with FIRST. It kind of sounds like an "Overcoming Obstacles" Award, though, and I don't really think that you'd want to think of yourself as an obstacle for a robotics team now would you? Especially since leading to the prevention of students being able to participate in this program also doesn't seem to be in the spirit of FIRST, which you so nobly claim to be a champion of. I feel that being able to take responsibility for your actions and statements is something that one should learn in this program, and I’m very disappointed that there are forum trolls here who would sit back behind completely indistinguishable forum names and blast a team without fear of scrutiny. Out of curiosity which disgruntled student or parent are you? I’ll start up or post in a “2006 Thanks / Congrats SVR” thread later on today after I’ve had a chance to organize my thoughts on that topic. |

Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
I would prefer to abstain from entering the conversation, but I would like to add that no matter how much freedom one should have to speak their mind, it's never nice to talk down to a team who persevered and came back to FIRST with a stronger and more spiritual attitude than ever before. We didn't win because of last year; we won because we've worked so hard to accomplish what was once started years ago.
Thanks to all the teams who went to the Silicon Valley Regional 2006, it was an awesome 3 days for me and hopefully we will see you at the Championship in Atlanta. -Co Driver, Team 192, Gunn Robotics Team |

And personally, It's not really in the spirit of FIRST to go off and say that a team received an award that they didn't deserve. I'm sure it has happened before, and it'll happen again, but my feeling of the matter is - If you felt they deserved it, congratulate them. If they didn't deserve it, but won it anyways, try to figure out ways to improve on your own team, so you'll have a better chance at it next year. With that being said, any Chairmans award winner is worthy of a congratulations from me. Congratulations 192, Chairmans is something to be proud of. With any luck, we'll see you in Atlanta next month. :) |

# 2 - I wish CD had a rule that all registered users had to identify themselves to post - it would certainly eliminate most (not all) of the petty and slanderous posts made on this forum. But as Bill and others have pointed out - it is a private forum, they can run it however they want, they do (and should) make rules for their forum, and if you/I/we don't like it, then don't come on the forum. If they want to moderate/delete posts they don't feel are constructive or gracious, all the power to them. # 3 - As a general rule, I know that most people I speak to in FIRST who frequent Chief Delphi do not put much stock in statements/comments/slander made by people anonymously. When I see someone make an anonymous post which flames/insults/slanders another team or person - I (and I think many) associate one, some or all of the following with the post and the person making it: pettiness, frustration, anger, resentment, jealousy, poor sportsmanship, ignorance, cowardice, doesn't handle losing well, in most cases doesn't really know anything of substance about the person or team they are talking about, and their post is just assumptions and speculations they "think" are true but actually aren't (or flat out attacks and/or lies they know aren't true but are making because they can do so anonymously). This is obviously not only about this post regarding GRT, it's about many posts over the years on CD where people let their personal issues (see above list) cloud their objectivity, and the result is that they put down an entire team which NEVER deserves it. If you have a problem with a person or a few people on a team, fine. Don't discredit all the students and mentors on that team who put so much time, effort and passion into their program. My opinion - if you feel you have something of value to say, something important, something factual, and something informative to share with the community - then do so with some conviction and be honest about who you are and what your bias/agenda/opinion might be. Everyone on this forum has opinions and everyone at some point disagrees greatly with what others think/say - that's great in a constructive and respectful atmosphere - we can certainly agree to disagree and still share our views. But stand up for your views and make them YOURS if you are going to post them, not some anonymous view you don't have to take credit for. sorry for the soap box - just hate to see posts try to discredit the accomplishments and hard work of any teams, and especially the students on those teams. |
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
I would like to say that Gunn deserved that award. They are an amazing team. They won because they had enough motivation, spirit and dedication to work through the toughest situation that any team can encouter, and came back stronger than before. And I don't think it takes a FIRST Judge to notice and recognize that.
On another note: here's my interpretation of why most of the discussion on GRT was removed. 1) It involved many people who have different opinions and would cause a large number of arguments on CD 2) Very few people know the full story of what happened. I know I don't. 3) It doesn't help anyone to continue the discussion. As Dave Lavery said in another thread, this was an isolated incident. It's HIGHLY unlikely that this will ever happen on another team. There is no reason to analyze what went wrong. They're back and that's what matters. |

At any rate, that's all in the past, so there's really no point in wasting space here rehashing what's done. |
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
We, Team47 Chief Delphi, invest alot of money and time into this website. We rely heavily upon Brandon (webmaster) and our moderators in assuring the website is being managed carefully.
The rules governing the use are posted and although they may not include every little aspect of when to close, delete or ask some to modify a post - the moderators have been given authority to assist us in trying to keep this site a helpful, sharing, place for the community of FIRST to gather and communicate their ideas. Sometimes, over the past 10 years, we have reacted to certain situations (threads and posts) that are not helpful or border on hurtful - particularly when they do not add any value to improving the entire FIRST community. We welcome opinions, ideas, suggestion, in a wide variety of forums. We work hard to try and find the right balance, as in the heat of the moment, "words" can be written that can cause enormous damage to both the person (not the team) posting and the team/person that is the focus of the post. Saying that - We (and the moderators we have entrusted) have and do retain the right to delete any and all posts that we see fit - for whatever reason that we deem appropriate. We do not take this lightly and often have much discussion among ourselves as to the appropriate actions that are taken. We thank any and all users that comply and revise posts, when suggested via pm or email. We are proud of the website and hope everyone can respect our decisions in managing it. Thanks for listening, Mike Aubry |
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
It made my heart soar like a eagle to see GRT back at SVR. When the
Chairman's award was announced, they got the loudest standing ovation I ever heard for any FIRST team, and they deserved it. The 2006 SVR was the best FIRST event I've ever been to, and that includes the 2000 National Championship. I admit I was a bit conflicted, having mentored 668 this year and 254 last year. I hope everyone's realized that 668 competed in the finals with a busted ball gun (stripped gears), and 1280 had only three wheels for the final match. In one of the greatest gestures of GP I ever saw, the 254 alliance granted an extra time out so that 1280 could tack on a caster, so they could run on three wheels. A long time ago, after 254 won an event, I told Mark Leon, "You must be so proud of your team." (254 is the NASA Ames house team). I'll never forget what he said to me. "All of them are my teams!" I am so proud of all of the teams that competed at SVR(and anywhere else). You guys give me hope for the future of our world. |
Re: 2006 Silicon Valley Regional
Hi,
I don't post on these forums very much however I felt now would be the appropriate time to start. I'm the student leader from 192 and I would like to say thank you to everybody who was so amazingly supportive and helpful to our team this year. It was wonderful to have so many people come up to the team and myself and say that they were happy to see us back. This was without doubt the best regional I've attended, and we're all thrilled to have won the chairman's award. Thanks again to everybody for all your support and help and I look forward to seeing you all at nationals. Regards, Daniela |
