Re: 2006 Southern California Regional

I made it there today, and was kindly hosted by the Beach Bots (my newly-adopted SoCal team). The level of competition was about the same as PNW, I think, with fewer shooters and better drive trains -- overall. The Beach Bots have a great all-around robot. It's like they are former national champs or something. 968 is just like 254 -- scary fast and accurate. The Poofs, if I can say so, seem to drive their robot a little better at this point of the season. Either of these twins will crush you if you turn your back for one second. There were some other really impressive teams and robots, but since this is the only SoCal regional I've attended, I haven't seen most before and will certainly get their numbers wrong. (Was it 559 or 995 that had the cool ramp-shooting mode??) My friend and I had a great time, and I hope my hearing will return to normal in a day or two.

I found out Friday that I have to be in Miami on the May 1. If I just flew down a few days early and did a layover in -- say -- Atlanta...

I think this has been the greatest So Cal regional experience for me (maybe because it's my last as a student). Great competition! Congratulations to the winners, you were able to dodge any problems in a match and congratulations to the runner-ups, as they provided some great matches to watch. What made more things exciting is if you were presenting Chairman's at the regional. 12 teams that were all worthy of winning made this a very competitive year for Chairman's. It definitely looks like FIRST will be expanding under the leadership of these teams.

Thank you to all who made SoCal as awesome as it was. Thank you to teams 362 and 589 as well, too bad we were knocked out so early.

Keep your eyes on CBS 2 and on the Daily Breeze for stories on Southern California.

There was an AV feed in the pits, and one of the San Diego teams (I won't reveal the number because I don't want to put them on the spot) had what appeared to be a DVD recorder attached to it all three days. Other teams had video cameras. There was no webcast.
