2006 Chairman's Award Winners

It is that time again.
We need to create a thread to list the 2006 Chairman's Award Winners in one thread.

In another thread several people were indicating that having 192 the CA winner at Silicon Valley was a Big Deal. Can anyone share why that should be the case? Is there a backstory on 192 that we need to know about?

The team was shut down last year and did not compete due to a number of problems. Bill Dunbar brought the team back this year, and also won the WFA. We're all really proud of them!

Note: Edited, didn't want to open any wounds. Thank you to Chris Fultz and Dave Lavery for pointing this out.

Re: 2006 Chairman's Award Winners

I'm so happy to hear that Gunn Robotics Team won Chairmans. GRT team 192 is an amazing team and it was very unfortunate that they had to stop for a year. To come back after being out of FIRST for a year and win the Chairmans Award is nothing short of amazing.

Thank you. Now I remember the story -- it was between students, right? IIRC, the allegations were not made against mentor(s).

dlavery 19-03-2006 16:41

Re: 2006 Chairman's Award Winners

I really don't care about the particulars of the unfortunate and isolated problems that they had last year. Those issues are documented elsewhere, and do not need to be re-hashed here. I am much more interested in hearing about their obviously successful efforts to rebuild their team, restore an effective program, and gain the support of an entire community. For any team to come back after a year off and create a Chairmans Award-worthy effort is an amazing feat. Bill Dunbar is a class act, and more than deserving of the WFA. This is a group from which I want to learn. I want to hear the details of their efforts from this year!

How many of these teams are multiple year winners. I know many of them have won 2 and 3 straight years. Also does anyone know if any of these teams was a former honorable mention or runner up at Championship or Nats. I was just wondering if we are going to get a 254 or a 67 this year. Who else would like to see a 300+ team win it this year?

So far, 1002, 236 and 111 are the only repeat winners that I know. team 1002 has won it 3 in a row at ptree. And 236 at UTC. Congrats to the BEAST team 71 for winning their first Chairman's AWard.

Team 612 won the Chairmans Award at Chesapeake Regionals for the first time. This was our first Chairmans Award ever, and now we are looking forward to the Championship. I have no idea so far what do you have to in Championship regarding Chairmans. Is there another 10 minute presentation or anythingelse?

Congratulations to all the Winners of Chairmans Award. Good Luck with the rest of the season.

All the regional CA winners go onto be eligible for Champs CA. Yep, there is another interview, 10min like regionals.

Here are the stats on Championship Honorable Mention, which was a new concept in 2004.

2004 Championship Honorable Mention: 341, 342, 1002

2005 Championship Honorable Mention: 118, 341, 365

341 is submitting in Philly with a very tough field of high quality teams, but we remain hopeful.

Good luck to the current winners and to all teams in the weeks ahead!!

I second that one! I'm familiar with a few of the teams listed, but I'm sure all the teams deserved the award as much as the ones I know do.

Just an extra congratulations to Team 25! They've done so much, including mentoring my team!

Good luck to to all at Nationals, and especially the judges for their job picking a National winner!

I guess this would be a great time to overview the feedback we got from the Chesapeake Judges for Chairman, and try to add or delete some stuff.
This is the first year we won the Chairmans Award; i looked at the other teams, realizing that some has 3-4 years of chairmans history behind them. Its gonna be a tough competition for Chairmans. But the coolest thing i like about FIRST is that at the end everyone is a winner. I learned so much out of this experience, that i really don't care if we win or not (obviously we are going to give it a try); just to be around the teams and people who help this world being a better place is more than enough.
Good Luck to everyone with the rest of the season.

For what its worth we thought you guys (612) had an awesome entry and a great team. I know one of our veteran kids was actually crying while listening to the description of what your team had done with the robotic walker.

Re: 2006 Chairman's Award Winners

Honorable mention is relatively new, but before the Chairman's Award was given at a regional level, all teams entered at the Championship (Nationals in those days). Five teams were recognized, four as runner-ups and one as the Championship CA winner. The four received an award...A mirror with two of the gears from the Chairman's Award Clock and a plaque that said "Chairman's Award winner in the Making." Some teams won that many times before winning the Chairman's Award. I think of Team 16. They won the Runner-up at the Championship four years before they won the CA. My team, the Heroes Of Tomorrow, won the runner-up twice at the Championship. Winning multiple times does not mean that you will win the Championship CA, but it does mean that you are doing the right things, so keep it up...your time is coming.

Also, there are many comments about low number teams winning. This is to be expected. Part of the Championship CA is legacy. Higher number teams may not have demonstrated their legacy yet. The may be the best at a regional, but not at the Championship. The Chairman's Award is not about doing something great for one year, you need to do great things year after year.

Good luck to all CA Regional Winners. And to those that tried and didn't receive recognition (win), come back stronger next year. Plan now for how to improve your team. Look for something to do during the off season (whenever that is). Keep up the good work. The bar keeps getting raised each year.

I understand this "legacy" issue, however I have one question. Do you think that a 4 year old team that has 3-peated with the Chairman's Award has a "legacy".

I want to say either 341 or 236 is due.. they've won it almost every year since FIRST began to do regional chairman's award presentations.

Re: 2006 Chairman's Award Winners

Just to clear things up, I've noticed this being in asked in other threads as well. If you want to be technical, they are the first non-US team to win a regional CA during a U.S. event (I believe). However, with the founding of the inaugural Canadian Regional in the Hershey Centre, Team 188 received a regional CA in 2002.

610 was accorded with that honour in 2003, along with 1006 in 2004.

It is not your team number or how many times that you have won that determines who wins the Championship Chairman's Award. It is what you have done and are doing. Team 47 won in their second year in 1997. You are right now looking at one of the things that helped them to win. (They were doing other things also...go look at their team website.)

Remember that winning multiple times does not guarantee the Championship CA, but it does show you are doing the right things. The judges are not looking at team number but CA activities done over time.

Santosh, go in and tell them all the good things that you have done and are doing. Sell your team to the judges. They have to believe that you are better than all the others. Be the first four digit team to win. Good luck in Atlanta. I will be the first to congratulate you.

Good luck to all teams.

Re: 2006 Chairman's Award Winners

This is an impressive list. Makes me wonder how on earth the CA judges at Championship are going to choose just one team to join the HOF this year.

To follow up on that thought: as FIRST adds regional events, the opportunities for regional medals and awards increase proportionally. And there's still just one Championship, so just one team per year gets into the HOF. Many exemplary teams may never make it in, because other exemplary teams are developing every year.

I don't mean to slight any team by mentioning the only ones that I have directly observed recently; my choices for the 2006 Chairman's Award would be 45, 71, 111, and 1114.

I'd find it very difficult to make a single choice, but if pressed I'd vote for 71. Reasons: (1) four championships -- I understand that FIRST isn't only about winning, but in 71's case the winning is evidence of an exceptionally strong overall program, and (2) FIRST's most productive alumni association -- just look around and see where former Hammond team members are now, what they've done for FIRST, the teams they've started.
