How to beat Mechanical Mauraders
 

I am well aware that FIRST emphaises everybody is a winner, But my team has lost to the Mauraders in the semi finals of ( I think) Every competition that both of us have attended. I was just wondering is there any way to beat them or simply just push them. In no way am I dissing the Mauraders they have a truly excellent robot, But does any body know how to beat them.:confused:

i think you guys have an amazing robot and i feel really bad we've kicked you out of the semifinals several times, you deserved to be in those final matches as much as we did..i hope to play w/ you and not against you in the competitions coming up..

you guys did have an awesome robot, maybe even better than ours. except i noticed away to greatly improve your pulling power. send me an e-mail at fast_frank88@hotmail.com and i will tell you more about it. sorry about beating you those 3 times, but you guys are great. you congradulated us each time and were still happy. you didn't seem pissed off at all, i know we would have been very angry if the same team beat us 3 times. we had to face 190 3 times in the qualifying matches at mayhem and lost all 3 times.

team 151 is the epitome of gracious professionalism.

Beat us? I think you can beat us! I'm surprised you haven't! but what can I say that my other cohorts haven't already said. You guys always seem happy to be beaten by us! Strategy. Thats all there is. Strategy. And a great team of drivers! and Dunkin Donuts has seemed to power us at times. hmm what else....

if you cant find it in the robot, look to strategy

yeah, 271's weakness, at least for SBPLI, was just to reach in and claw out their pnematics system. :D luckily for them, they fixed that little problem :p.

that wasn't funny :(. anyway, we fixed that problem and added some extra protection to all the pneumatics and electronics ;)

you guys deserve the biggest congrats for beating us in every comp we have gone too, but like you said in an earlier reply, its all about da strategy. at mayhem we had a driver who was experienced, he was cocky, and made a mistake, everybody makes mistakes. i still think that if 190 hadn't broken its arm off, then i believe that we could have prevented you from stealing our goals and eventually winning mayhem. but hey all power to you for winning, i just hope we don't have to face u guys in the qf's or sf's, but have a great time and kick some more robo-butt, i hope this post doesnt sound offensive, i am not degrading anybody, just giving my two cents worth:)

Ok so you want some strategy huh ok here we go I'll break it down for you in intervals of thirty seconds.
2:00-1:30 remaining- Team 271 loads and gets balls from the human player it's there design it's what they do LIVE WITH IT!!!
1:30-1:00 remaining- Team 271 looks for a goal this is when the capabilities of their alliance partner comes in if their a goal handling robot you need to deny them a goal if their a goal grabbing robot you need to battle and waste the oppositions time while you control two goals. The more time you waste the less balls they put in. If your robot posesses power like oh say Team 88 who puts robots on their sides in pushing contests then go ahead for a steal. Proceed to do this for the remaining minute then with less then thirty seconds you need to make a judgement call on whether to hang with the goal and push it out of the zone or run back to the endzone although I think 151 you have a tether so it doesn't really matter. Also 151 your a good two goal grabber and I really don't understand why sometimes you play defense you need to lead your alliance I think offensively and insure your alliance two goals. Let your alliance partner play defense for you and then you will be all set. Just remember Saturday what I told you and you can pay me back during the draft.:cool: I'm sorry 271 but strategy is strategy.

in case you didn't see at mayhem, we pulled 190 up on their side too, we were pulling, you were pushing. that was teamwork. and at that time we were only running on 1/2 power. we are completely rebuilding our drive system for battle cry so we will always be operating with 100% power. it will be bullet proof! we just gotta pull a few more all-nighters and it will be done...

all right I wasn't at Mayhem but from what I see on tape what you did was in the aftermath of what we did and if you like you can sample your power against us saturday ok simple as that we have been doing it all season.

Ok everyone, this is pretty simple. The max points that team 271 can get not counting thier partner is 30 (10 balls, 2 goals, or 10 balls 1 goal, and i think they have a tongue for 10 more). So all you have to do to beat them is get 1 goal, and 21 balls for a score of 31. We beat them many many times before mayham and then they figured out that they could not do their strategy anymore because the points were not high enough and they attacked us. Thats how they beat us those two times and we give them props for that. But otherwise if they stick to their strategy it isnt that difficult to score more points than them.

As for 88, we have beat them quite a few times but I must say that they have put up a fight a few times. They are easier to beat because they only grab one goal leaving two other goals free usually so it is not that hard.

We will see who puts the best strategy together at WPI

I am still hoping our new drivers can pull this win off with the little amount of practice and experience they have had but I will be praying.

Also I think its crazy that teams are working so hard on their robots. We are basically doing system checks on it once a week. We have not changed anything on it because we like her the way she is.

Ok you gave me a shot 121 so I'll give it to you back. 121 is not invincible and actually ask them about UTC we beat you then in the qualification rounds (unfortunately we didn't have the strategy to take you out in the finals) and WPI with all the talent we will beat you again. The key is you need to playDEFENSE outscoring is not going to happen unless your 95 or some other good ball bot. Now if you posess power just let them fill the goal and take it away from them for some ungodly reason they like to run up the score so they entrust their goal to whoever their alliance partner is. Take the goal you win as now 121 will be scrambling to find a goal to put balls in.
AS for Elimination Rounds go I can't give all my strategy after all you will see it Saturday and if it all works their will be no triple crown unless where within their alliance.

Just for Clarification, the reason we lost that round in UTC is because we accidentally put our agitator bar backwards, and therefor couldn't dump.

And in Rally in the Valley the reason you were barley able to push us a zone and a half is because you had the dirty birds were helping you, and we had a battery that was kind of low.

Plus we know 88's strategy , they don't have many options.

well, first off, we can get 40 points just by our selves, 2 goals, 10 balls and a tether. plus what ever our partner gets. i have to say that we probably work the best with a ball getter, like 121 and buzz. plus our strategy is always changing, sometimes we get 10 balls, sometimes we don't, sometimes we only take a few balls. 1 or 2 goals? who knows? remember we're .271, not 71, we have more than one stratagy.

121, what happened? i thought we were friends now. i know we didn't get along too well at ralley in the valley (2/10's of a point!) but i thought we made up at mayhem on the merrimac. i mean, we won each level of the finals in 2 matches. we never lost a match in the finals!. i think that our two robots work well together. i am looking forward to being allied together for at least a qualifying match, who knows, maybe even the finals again.

We are, Joe is talking about in theoritical terms. Anyways, I have always like 271. You were really good in Mayham, and I hope you will be our allience in WPI

271, I was not putting you down I was just posting with the title of the post which was how to beat you guys. I simply gave an idea. We did work good together at Mayham. If you cant beat them, join them- so thats what we did.

Almost Flipped?
 

I just want to let 151 know that although it looked like they might have some close to flipping us, they really didn't. I was the driver there, my first time, and I was turning the same time they hit us, they might have knocked the robot off balance a little, but since we were holding onto a goal they would of had to flip us, and the goal. Something that i don;t think would happen!! 151 is VERY strong but not strong enough to push over 300+ pounds! ;)

Not really (Filliping us I mean). I wasn't there but I saw the video. We were latched onto a goal which means our CG was probably bellow the carpet. You did poke a nasty hole, at our expensive lexan.

Anyways, I have always liked 151. They came up with a pretty decent robot, and we won River Rage with them last year. maybe we can be partners in BattleCry.

ok lets all look at the facts (and this is clarity not offensive attack),

271: Great Power, pretty good strategy, ability to grab 2 goals and score 10 balls each match. Been in the finals alot. won mayhem with 121.

88: Moderate Power, can only grab one goal, and can only score in home zone with carpet. Strategy could use some work. been in finals alot. constantly beaten by 121. no wins this year to my knowledge.

151: Moderate power. Flipped over at utc. ability to grab 2 goals. Constantly beaten by 271. no wins this year to my kowledge.

121: Good power. Great ball handling ability (can pick up 20 balls, grab one goal, move into scoring zone and dump within 25 seconds from start. Goal grabber is one of the best. lowest seed has been 4th. Lowest finish has been 5th in the nation. Have won 3 out 5 competitions. National motorola quality award. need i say more?

ok i will.

those are the facts people. When push comes to shove. 88 pushes 151. 121 pushes 88, and 271 pushes 121. when it comes to balls: 271 puts in 10 hp balls, 121 puts in 40 yellow, and 88 and 151 watch in horror as they get beaten by 271 and 121.

next time you want to downplay a great team like 121, review the facts.

Thank you very much for your kind words, Riverrage last year was my first competition as a driver, and it was great, i will always remember it, and if 151 doesn't win battlecry it will be my only competiton win with 151 because this is my last year. So thanks 121 and 190

I don't think anyone was trying to downplay your great robot , just saying that you are beatable, its tuff but can be done. I wish you guys the best of luck at Battlecry and would love to work with you.

Secondly,
Just a response to you evaulation of our robot, You'll notice we tipped once at UTC and then never again, our drive module was assembled loose and that allowed it to drag on the carpet. It hasn't happened since.

Everytime we have gone against 271 they have had kick butt partners, at utc they had buzz, at ralley, they had the Cyberknights, at mayham the had 121, i think one on one we could take 271 but thats just my opinion. They have a great bot.

Thirdly don't underestimate 151, You must have missed it Rickstar121 but we a divisional semifinalist at Nationals,
and we are building a teather for Battlecry, and have fixed our breaker problems.

when i had stated that we almost flipped 121, i know we did not because of the fact that they had a goal attached, if not i believe we could have flipped them, not as questionable tactics, but as a defensive manuever.
hey 190, i reaally hope we will be able to try that wall we had made in the practice rounds of mayhem!

Our bullet-proof drive system has been done!!! i cant' wait to test it against the toughest robots tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

looks like a lot of teams figured out how to beat us! we just sucked at battle cry. no one picked us and we only played 6 matches. it was our worst performance of the year. at least our "bullet-proof" drive train didn't break!
