Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame

I don't care about defense. I don't care about clever designs. Who scores? Which robots can put in 25+ points if you let them loose for five seconds? Who needs 100% defense all the time or they trash you? Which robots have scored 40-50 points in match by themselves?

One request: No reputation votes. If you haven't seen the robot in person or on a Webcast, please don't list them. Please include the team's nickname or robot name if you know it.

If you prefer defensive bots, go ahead and start another thread, but please don't list them here (unless they shoot the lights out of the goal).

Extra credit goes to bots that get it done in autonomous, too.

I'll give you my starter list for the 2006 Shooter Hall of Fame:

254, the Cheesy Poofs
968, Johnny Five
25, Raider Robotix
987
11, Mort
1280
330, the Beach Bots
95, the Grasshoppers

I gotta say, 343 was a serious threat when we were against them this morning. (On the flip side, I gotta say 343 was a serious asset when we were allied with them this morning. ;))

Re: Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame

Teams 494 Martians and 70 More Martians were pretty good. 135 from Boilermaker, if you didn't play defense on them they lit it up and sometimes when you did. I didn't see a full match, but I think 111 Wildstang was pretty darn good at Milwaukee. The Triplets were good from what I saw of them on the Great Lakes web cast.

These next teams are just below the ones above, but you still need defend them. 27 Team RUSH was good at West Michigan, so were 33 Killer Bees and team 85 BOB or Built On Brains. 66 the Fliers were also good. These team were all in the finals.

This is really is really hard to think of teams. There were some at West Michigan that are good, but were also easily stopped. I wish 111 Wildstang and 71 The Beast or Beatty were there, then I could of seen them and commented on them.

I just saw 118 (the robonauts?) at the Lone Star Regional. Awesome shooter. It was scoring all 10 in autonomous almost every match. Their alliance ended up losing the final final when they became agressively defended.

Soooo.....118

Well since it says "shooter" and 1 pt scorers are considered shooters, I think they should also be commented on in this thread. :) 1 Pt scorers can do major damage in any match...

The requirement seems to be 25 or more points in 5 seconds. In that case Team 830 The Rat Pack scored 36 points in their second quarter finals match at the Waterloo regional in less than 5 seconds.

3Pt. Shooters
968 - The match is GONE if they get right under the center goal on the ramp
599 - Changed thier shooter now they are even better than before!

1pt. Shooters
1006 - Awesome 'bot with great capabilities other than scoreing (defense, getting on ramp, etc...)
1759 - Rookie team but killer 'bot

Heh, winnovation :) I was just about to say you guys... heh...

1625 Winnovation (Not sure of the allaince bots) had a game 90 to 8 one of the games. Winnovation was pretty threatening at St. Louis Regional.

and 1288, Raven Robotics, if you leave them alone for a few seconds it'll come back to haunt you. We played then and were ahead by about 20 points and in the last few seconds while everyone was getting on the ramp, they came over and shot about 7-8 balls in a row winning them the game bye about 8 points. It was pretty cool.

135 Penn Robotics
They were tearing it up during qualifications at BMR, once they got in position if their wasn't defense on them they would tear it up
85 B.O.B
A threat from multiple locations, definately one of the best teams to come out of the Midwest this year
27
Good range, good accuracy, great shooter
322
This is a low goal scoring robot, but they were really fast and could pick up 10+ balls and dump them in the low goal while the top shooters were still filling up and getting into position.
1501
another good shooter that really did some damage at boilermaker
74
When they unloaded the speed with which they shot was awesome, they were pretty accurate most of the time as well which made them all the more intimidating

Apperently it worked, and we were usually scoring 30 points in autonomous, plus the extra 10. Thanks to tech tigers for doing a great job defending us in autonomous.

All the research I've been reading about, 25 is the dominate team this year. Can't wait to face them at nationals, for a rematch of New Jersey.

Congrats to everyone who competed at the Palmetto Regional.

Just to add one that hasn't been mentioned yet.

Team 703. They collected balls really well but mostly they could get on top of the ramp and just pour them out. It was like dumping through the air into the goal. Impressed me quite a bit and it certainly scared their opponents.

These are all great teams. So are 1272 Tyrannikal Mechanikal and 107 R.O.B.O.T.I.C.S. 1272 was a great partner at Boilermaker and if they were still around for our second pick at West Michigan, we would have picked them. 107 was good at shooting from the ramp and about mid court. They could easily score all there balls from the ramp, unless you got up there and moved them. It was amazing to see them come with balls and start firing from mid court, you think that the ramp is the only place for them to score, and your wrong.

The Triplets have lost matches.
1114 and 1503 stared down the barrel of elimination twice yesterday!
And 254 lost a match in the finals.

Shaun,

Off the top of my head here are some records which stand out,

111: 19-3-2 in qualifying, 31-4-2 overall.
254: 17-3-1 in qualifying, 29-5-1 overall.
469: 20-0 in qualifying, 30-2 overall with both losses to 1114 & 1503 in the GLR finals.
1114: 28-2 in qualifying, 46-5 overall.
1503: 25-5 in qualifying, 43-8 overall.

So, there are some impressive records out there, but nothing as dominant as what Team 25 accomplished this year. The last time a team went undefeated in a regional season, would be Team 69 in 2004, although they had two ties. Basically, we're talking about one of the most impressive regional seasons ever.

So the scariest possible alliance would be one of the triplets (especially 1114) getting hooked up with 25.
There would be no hope.

The Martians did a lot better than I expected. I guess I didn't expect them to build a good shooter bot - I've only been on the team for one year, and it seemed like last year they did more defending than scoring. The Triplets also did great once they got on the platform it seemed - they made every shot if you didn't knock them around a bit.

We (Team 33) have been having a bit of trouble with different things on Buzz 11 (current bot) but it did pretty good at Grand Valley as far as things breaking and stuff. We didn't rank high but I think that's mostly because we got ganged up on and often got stuck with some not-so-good teams in the qualifying rounds (one didn't even have wheels  ).

One of the ones I liked from Grand Valley was that real small, fast one - I forgot what team it was already but even though they only got one-pointers, they did it REAL fast, and they were able to get 10 points guaranteed right off the bat. BOB did really good too, like you said.

I think you're referring to 322. Our design was insanely simple, but incredibly effective and robust. Most people don't appreciate just how many points a 1-pt bot can score. We easily score our 10 points in auto and then 20+ in regular play. Though there are a few shooters out there that regularly score 30+ points per game (Triplets, 469, 85, 27, 494, 70, 451 just to name a few I've seen personally), a quick and efficient 1-pt robot can "quietly" score just as many points because they are rarely defended as much as a shooter... 1-pt scorers can also have the advantage of a lower center of gravity and be great defensive players inaddition to their offensive abilities . I think a good shooter this year is a thing of beauty, but it's nice to finally see some love for the little guys.

BTW- West Michigan was great! As usual, the competition was awesome. Most importantly, I just enjoy the mutual respect I see between all the teams- veterans and rookies alike. As a mentor, it definitely reminds me of why I do this year after year.

Re: Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame

I was team 418’s (LASA) driver at the Lone Star Regional Competition. We were allied with 231 and 1421; as an alliance, we decided I would do my best to keep 118 from scoring. Their shooter was amazing. The only time I did not see them score at least 9 balls during autonomous was when our robot pushed theirs so much their camera could not find the light.
During all three finals matches, I refused to let them do what they wanted. It was only because of this that they did not score ball after ball.
Also, 231 were an excellent team to have in our alliance, they reliably scored for us throughout the day. I was too consumed in stopping 118 to see exactly how many they scored, but I know it was enough to come back after 118 scored 10 balls during autonomous in the second game of the finals.
Finally, I would like to thank 231 for their excellent shooting and 1421 for their reliable autonomous, awesome defense and reliable lower scoring.
In addition, 118, I am deeply sorry for tipping your robot over in the final game; it was simply too effective for me to leave alone.

I almost forgot 148, the Robowranglers. I personally didn't get to see them a whole lot, but I know I was impressed the one time we were allied with them. The only reason they didn't make it to the finals was because 118 knocked them out in the semi's, and there's no shame in that.

That was team 322. They were amazingly fast. One minute, wait make that 20 seconds, they were all over the field picking up balls then scoring. I could hardly believe there speed. The are good and if there available would make a good second pick. I would pick them first, but they don't fit with my strategy.

Yeah, 148 had a beautiful machine. They had a really consistant autonomous, generally making at least 7-8 balls. Also, 118's alliance partner 437 had an awesome shooter when they were able to get into position. But that didn't happen often in the finals because Newton418 stayed right on top of them and 118, never really giving them a chance to score.

I'd like to echo what has been said of 148. Their shooter was excellent, and always provided for an interesting match. However, I think the best thing was how quickly they were able to make repairs after the first semi-final. Anyone watching LSR could see that their intake roller broke off along with a few other pieces. They were able to repair the roller and their funnel to the shooter in the few minutes before their second semi-final match. Very impressive.

I'd like to second the poofs (254) and raider robotix (25). We had the pleasure of watching the poofs play in SVR, and being in an alliance with team 25 in the Vegas regional, and I was really impressed by their scoring mechanism. 987 also come really close, with a great roller and very effective scoring.

Those really stand out in my mind.

How could you not be noticed :D Watching your bot pop 3's from the side of the ramp with nothing we could do about it, rates in my book as well.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned 1126. They had an amazing shooter in Finger Lakes and a very effective ball pickup system. When they got everything worked out they would sink 9-10 balls in autonomous and could shoot from quite a distance away. They would also shoot extremely fast, I think their were times where they would have about 5 balls in the air at once.

This may be a bit biased but watch match 8 from the Palmetto. In that match we, team 343 Metal in Motion, spent the second and third periods collecting and then with 20 seconds left ( and the real time scoring showing us ahead 16 to 9) unloaded. The Real time scoring system showed our final score as 115 but the actual score was 94, the high score of the regional until the eliminations.

Re: Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame

Here is my top 10 shooters of this year.

1.) 1114 - The drive team is great. They work together really well and they adapt to situtations on the field almost flawlessly. And when they line up its hard to stop them from unloading 8 - 10 balls in the goal

2.) 25 - You really can't defend against them, just don't give them any balls. And with a seasoned driver like Corey at the sticks it makes it even harder.

3.) 111 - These guys are always amazing. This is for shooters and they can shoot. But all around they have what it takes.

4.) 494 - They may have a twin out thier but this is the real deal. Thier is just something about this team that makes you want to keep them close
when you are against them.

5.) 254 - If they are on the ramp, you are in trouble. And even when they aren't watch out for the shooting from anywhere.

6.) 217 - Match up a great turret and shooter with a solid drive train and you have a heck of a robot. You give these guys 10 balls and let them get set up your going to be sorry.

7.) 233 - Thier turret is pretty solid. And the drivers know what they are doing.

8.) 121 - Turret, Drivetrain, Rhode Warriors. Need I say much more. They will get to where they need to be no matter what and unload.

9.) 1503 - Many people put this triplet higher but I don't think thier drive team is there yet. But thier robot is very lethal none the less.

10.)703 - These guys can be defended against but if they get on that ramp your going to see thier score go up pretty quick

I hope 365 was mentioned. If they get on the ramp with noone to stop them...well, it's not pretty.

And 173, RAGE. Can't say that they could destroy you in 5 seconds, but they didn't need to. The only "immoveable" robot we encountered. Quite frustrating really...

Yeah that rings a bell.

When you really think about it, having a robot go for the one-pointers has a lot of advantages. Not only is it simpler, but the robot can be made much lighter and faster. You guys were just flying down the field it seemed! And also I'm sure you guys got done with the bot sooner than some of the teams with more complex bots which is a big advantage.

I am only going by what i have seen.

1126 - is on the top of my list.amazing, keep it up and see ya on Einstein.
1114,1503 - only because they are little more experienced then 1680
1680 -reason above
703 - you get them on the ramp and watch out!
217 - the only way i saw to stop them was have a thing to block their shooter, amazing auto mode.
296 - GTR Radioshack award winners, great shooter
610 - don't leave them alone.
378 - a little slow but once the ball left it was a great chance of going in.
340 - Another side driven robot, hard to move and don't let them free.

1501
135
888
85
292

461
and how could i possibly forget about 365 until now (probably cause they've been named a few times before)
(at least the teams that can shoot 8 and up balls at once that i can remember..or at least close enough to that amount)

The great teams from GTR:
- 1114 and 1503 Simply amazing.
- 217 almost as good, impossible to stop in auto.
- 1680 almost as good as the older brothers.
- 229 and 703 Don't give them the ramp.
- 296 Very nice.
- 68 Impressive in Waterloo

My list, in no particular order
254 (and I'd assume 968, but I havn't seen them)
1114, 1503, 1680
229
703
1731 (best rookies this year, imho. Pity they won't be at Championship to prove it :( )
343
233
121
1261

And sense this a pure shooter thread, there is absolutely no way you can't include 435! 5 balls per second! 100% accuracy if un-defended! I had the unfortunate expierience of playing them in my first Qualifying match at VCU. During auto, our defensive auto mode missed them by a few inches, allowing them to score 7 or 8 in the center during autonomous. Then we tipped during our offensive period after dumping 10 in the corner (our only tip during VCU just had to be during this match....), and our defense pretty much broke down without us. 435 was able to get 3 un-disturbed chances to open fire, resulting in an 86-34 loss for us :( (almost 100% of their scoring was by 435)

Ahemm...No. At Pitt they told me a story. At the end of one of their matches, they were still lined up and shooting. Their hopper gate was open, their wheel was still spinning, and as a result, after the time ended, their robot continued to score points! I was quite impressed with that one...

I never thought I would be afraid of an alliance called "Division by Chicken"... but I am. :p

229 and 217 , simply amazing robots. They both aren't regional champs for no reason. Had 229's shooter been working, GTR may have been a completly different regional.

25, Haven't seen anybody stop them yet.

1114, 1503, 1680 - Unbelievably accurate and with no turret I believe? So far they have been unbeatable allies when together because these guys play a mean offense :ahh:

233, most teams have to plan their entire strategy against these guys when playing them. Their turret accounts for almost anything anybody can throw at them.

Their are a whole bunch more too, but these are the one's that stick out in my mind the most right now.

GO 1403!!!

254 Cheesy Poofs Or Triplets...I saw both

One at PNW and one at GTR. Thier both pretty good...I don't know which one is better frankly. Cheesy gets a lot more balls in shorter amount of time but then if they can't ramp then it's no good.

Final round...One triplet strafing in the shot position of the other triplet so it couldnt make shots. It was crazy.

Not anymore. At SVR they were being blocked from the ramp (one robot already on top) so....they sat right below the ramp and shot, with the same accuracy and speed. The defender came down to push them away, but the damage was already done.

For no reason that I can fathom, I just spent a half-hour going through this thread and compiling your comments. There are 83 robots in this year's Shooter Hall of Fame. I am thrilled, by the way, that roughly 8% of the robots participating this year made the list of Top Guns. That's pretty good parity for FIRST.

Since this is the most non-random sample in the history of ascientific sampling, I won't say anything else about it other than that it represents the posts in this thread.

As a volunteer, robot inspector, and referee at GLR, MWR, Milwaukee, and Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to see many good shooters close up. As a referee I've avoided voicing my opinion on them, but since I'm not working Atlanta this year - here goes:

I'm sure there are other great shooters out there, but these are the ones that I've seen - Ranked in order of my assessment:

1114 - Deadly accurate and fast shooter, almost immovable, top/front & floor load, chassis auto-aim slower to respond than turret type. Beat them by blocking human load into front of bot - push into wall, or get in between the bot and humans

1503 - same as above (? third triplet gets way less out of same robot)

25 - Deadly accurate and fast shooter. Fast and powerful drive train. Not easy to move, but was not facing much in the way of powerful robots in Vegas. Top load only. Beat them by not letting them into, or out of, the human loading station. Do not try pushing them off their shot unless you do a pik on front corner, or plant yourself directly in front of them - their shot comes out lower than most of the great ones. Do not try pushing them onto the ramp, they like the elevation and will drill shot after shot.

469 - Deadly accurate and fast shooter. Turret auto-aim best of the bunch. Their strong suit is their strategy, which is also their weakness. Take them off it and it's panic time. They too can't shoot what they don't have. Their human load is a very small target.

494 - Not as deadly accurate but fast shooter. Turret auto-aim slow to respond. Complex ball handler prone to malfunction. Yet they and 70 manage to win because the others leave them alone to gather ammo.

70 - Same as 494, except drive team less experienced.

111 - Very good shooter. Turret-aim second only to 469. They like to plant themselves against corner of the platform's side plexi. Have omni wheels on back. Rear quarter pik will spin them. Do not let them alone when they play back-bot and gather a ton of balls - not unless you want to be picking them out of the garbage can. Shut them down early, otherwise Raul will out think you!

987 - Impressive in that they play smart. Unimpressive shooter because it's way too low - but they find opportunities if you let them.

71 - Was shooting less than 50% at MWR. Maybe because they took a fall in practice that messed them up big time. But they know how to play. And just like all the above will kill you if you leave them alone at ANY TIME.

Honorable mentions.

79 - Good shooter, but it leaves the bot about four feet high. Nuf said.

1213 -They won every autonomous at MWR (except for one when pit-crew error took out their launcher [and them out of #1 seed], and one in elims when they got hit hard), averaged 61.8 (alliance) points/game. Had they driven the robot the way it was designed, and maintained it the way that they should, then they may have been something other than an also ran.

I can't believe there is two of sighting of 86. You guys havent seen Team Resistance's robot, 86.

Check this pic out. This is at FL Regional where its shooting during anomnous period.

I would say Team 233, and 1523 are good solid shooters and they are worthy opponent.

365 moe

I have to give a mention to team 25, they can't be stopped.

Also team 365 is a fast shooter and is tough to get out of position if they start shooting.

Can I "un-mention" 469? We would like to go into Atlanta without anybody knowing about us...

So, that would be a -1 for 469 bring our total to zero...

;)

Nice try Don, but I think there were a couple of us that saw you play at GLR and Detroit.

:D

Don,

I think you just painted another circular stripe around the target on your back. Good luck in Atlanta.

More bad news. Andy's counts as ten - mine five. Your are now a sizzling 15!

EDIT// PS: I used his weight vs mine to come up with those numbers. :)

Psh, good one Don.

I'm surprised 95 was only mentioned once. Their mass shooter was impressive to watch on the webcast. It's a shame they won't be at Atlanta.

Yeah, we wish we were going (we went last year). On the flip side, it'll be nice to sit back and watch the webcasts and cheer for our favorite teams (mine are 11, 16, 40, and 180, good luck, folks!). And start planning for next year.

Sorry, Don. The moving finger writes; and, having writ, moves on: nor all your piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all your tears wash out a word of it. In other words, you are a marked shooter.

These are teams that I have seen personally, these 3 have really good shooters and 1024 has an awsome autonomous mode.

Don't forget about 1501 :D
1501 and 1024 both have pictures on CD-Media (just search tags).

I really loved the grasshoppers, Team 95. We chose them to be one of our alliance partners in Palmetto, and they can really pack a punch!

Can you say last-second semifinal win? Sometimes they can hit two or three at the exact same time!!! Their shooter is just amazing. Thanks for being such a great alliance partner Grasshoppers! We're really sorry you couldn't make it to Atlanta.

Thanks to team 175 for mentioning our team's robot, "Sergeant York," among those recognized here in the "2006 Hall of Fame". We didn't have our camera-guided autonomous shooting working until nearly all of the qualifying rounds were over, but it worked great in the elimination rounds to help our alliance with 133 and 1276 proceed through the finals without a loss. We didn't attend a subsequent regional to see if we could better our #7 seeding from the Granite State Regional in Week 1, but we're looking forward to competing with the best of the best on Newton in Atlanta!

A few photos of Sergeant York are posted on CD-Media.

Thanks especially to yodameister, Crazy unicyclist, and Chris Orimoto for recognizing 1351.
This season was great! Thanks everyone

103 extremely fast and good shooter( handles like an remote controled toy car)

365(gets on platform and scores about 60-80 points at one time, and human players can actually get a ball into it's hopper all the way across the field)

Re: Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame

25 caused us big problems in trenton...

Though if you let 365 on the ramp below the goal you lose =)... unless, perhaps, you're 25...

25 had a great turret, but 365 got up on the ramp, sat literally against the glass and shot something like 20 balls in with perfect accuracy, while being pretty much unblockable.

So I don't know about the "let loose for five seconds" part, but they certainly have the capability to put up big numbers.
