2006 who's staying where

Ok...I think Eugenia Gabrielov did this last year...

I found out today our team (1610) will be staying at the Comfort Inn
downtown. (wish it had been the Omni) Where's everyone else gonna be?

I'd walk. It doesn't cost money, and it isn't very far at all.

We stayed at the Hyatt 2004 and 2005. MARTA is very quick, but honestly, it is sometimes easier to just walk. The endless escalators are fun though.

Re: 2006 who's staying where

I have two years of experience from going to Nationals staying at the Westin Peachtree. I have found that it is quicker to walk from the hotel to competition because with the MARTA you have to go from N1 (Peachtree Station) to Five Points, that is 1 station south. Then you have to get on a Westbound train to W1 (Dome, CNN, OMNI Station), that is 1 station west. The time that it takes to go all the way up and down the escalators and get on and off trains takes more time then just walking. It is about 15 minute walk from Westin to Competition.

You will see the direction that all the teams walk will match up with http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2006...wntown_Map.pdf
and they will all walk down Andrew Young International BLVD. Good way to meet other teams and have a good conversation.

MARTA from Airport to Hotel is very nice and probably the best way to go cost wise. (about 35-40 minute ride if I remember right)

If it is anyone's first time down to Atlanta and have a question or two I would be happy to answer them if I can. AIM, E-mail, MSN, ICQ, ChiefDelphi PM whatever :)

The Hyatt is right near the Peachtree MARTA station, so it may be worth it. Last year, as well as this year, 228 is staying at the Hilton Hotel, and we are planning to purchase the MARTA passes again this year.

As for commute times, it depends on the time of the day. If you leave at rush hour, they run trains about every three or four minutes. In the off peak hours, they run trains every six to eight minutes, and depending on how long you have to wait, it may/may not be faster to walk.

At rush hour, it is faster to take MARTA from the Peachtree station than to walk. Last year, one of the morning commutes from the hotel to the GA Dome, our drive team and the rest of our team both left our hotel (the Hilton) at the same time. The drive team took MARTA (from Peachtree station), while the rest of the team walked the whole way. The drive team got to the pits about 10 minutes before the rest of the team. After this, most of the team took MARTA.

I think that would only happen to Poof Balls that had been moderately shredded by teams. Brand new ones are coated pretty well, and I don't think they would absorb water well. Ones that have been used a lot by shooters are much more exposed to the inner foam, and they would get very heavy when in water. I speak from experience outside of FIRST involving Poof-footballs.

Hey guys 222 has been accepted into nationals and we are unsure of where to stay this year. Due to extreme budget issues, we are looking for a really cheap hotel that isn't too far way from the dome. Any teams staying at such a hotel? My team has stayed at the Marriot the past few years and its time to find a cheap hotel! Any help would be appreciated! :D

Eugenia Gabrielov 08-04-2006 23:19

Re: 2006 who's staying where

If I were you, I'd try stuff like Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn, etc. You don't want a terrible hotel, or you'll have problems, but a lot of the "Inn" types are generally affordable. Our team is collectively travelling with two other teams, totally to probably about 90ish people total. We'll be at Comfort Inn happily :)

Team 461, 1646, and 1747 are all from the same geographic area (Greater Lafayette, IN). We're a big bunch, you can't miss us, as the team colors go something like this:
