What if there was a FIRST Video Game

seince FIRST is becoming a big deal around this time of year.... would you like to see a good looking FIRST video game covering the FIRST year, sort of like FIRST Robotics 2006 or something.....

You know, Electronic Arts HQ is about a 45 min drive away from my house......

and anyway, some of us use AudoDesk 3DsMax, can't you create Video games on there. (i've heard it can be done....)

Any Ideas

EA headquarters are in Redwood City, CA (as stated at http://info.ea.com/company/company_background.php).

As for there being a FIRST game, it would be really awesome, but I imagine it would also be very hard to do.

I would definately give it a shot if somebody did the work.

They also have a major building in Orlando, maybe not the "official" HQ, but it is..really big.

But if there was a FIRST video game, I'd think it would be an RPG

Search the forums for "FVG". This has been discussed ad nauseum by a bunch of folks.

This idea has been brought up before. Take a look at Robot Arena 2 if you Google it I'm sure you will find it. Anyways it has multi-player and yes in its current form it is like BattleBots but they have a pretty good engine and since they are already doing a lot of the things a FIRST game would want to do it seems like if someone could get access to their engine it would be a great starting point. Maybe even approach the company directly.

Thoughts...

Re: What if there was a FIRST Video Game

I have been proposing this to my team for 2 years now. I was proposing it as more of a driving simulator where you would take the view point of one of the drivers at the player station. Every robot would be intricately modeled and stated based on their actual results and abilities. In the matches the player could go through autonomous, drive the robot around and score. I was thinking of this as a potential MMO game with possible RPG qualities where players could actually make their own robots and compete as "rookies" in the competition. that was just my idea though.

One team I can't remember who off hand animated a field and their robot and made it so people could drive it around and shoot balls. Its the very beginning steps. See it here

Re: What if there was a FIRST Video Game

I mean like a Madden Type game, you go through the regionals.....and everything in the matches

but there is also a RPG type storyline that takes you through build and everything, down to FLL and all that fun stuff

I think it can be done.....The company that does the graphics and puts together the Madden Series, is in Matland, it's about a 30 min drive from Orlando.

It would take a while to create.....but it's a good idea

I'll think about stopping by over there and giving them a presentation befor championship.....maybe get a sponcership

It looks like the FVG and URC projects are kind of dead...

I thought a little bit about a FIRST video game and it seems like a really cool idea...

This summer I am taking a course in Maya and MEL, and I am planning on sharpening up my programming and CG skills, so hopefully I will be able to help in any future projects.

Myself and some special selected team members of 174 have worked on a "game" for the past year and a half. We will release it around the opening day of next season or sooner depending on when our testing becomes complete. We don't expect it to be something everyone will enjoy, but at least it's free to all FIRSTers. And that's all I can say.

FIRST video game? NO. Hey kids get out of that cave you call a room and do something active like build a robot and compete with other kids in person. Leave the video games alone. In the future playing games won't get you a big fat paycheck. I've also noticed that allot of my son's gamer friends are carrying an extra 20 - 40 LBS. Not a good way to start adulthood. Get out and do something. Hey once in a while I'll play a first person shooter, But there's so much more to do in life.

There actually is a constructive use for a FIRST video game, such as recruiting. I think it would be easier if kids could relate to the format, a medium they are familiar with, to ease into FIRST. Personally, I think it would be cool, but it would be a LOT of work--physics, textures galore, etc. It would have to be technically correct to be useful at all. I would love to help if we work on a game, but I don't know how accurate we could get it. Just think: a simulator for the team programmer (me) to test things the real bot would destroy itself on...I guess I'd better just keep on dreaming...

JBotAlan

PS Seriously, this summer, contact me and I'll help out with a FIRST video game--it sounds like fun!

I have RA2... it was developed by Infogrames, now Atari. It's a very fun game. If someone has 3DSMax v5 you can even create your own parts and arenas and stuff like that. I'd like to see people make FRC parts and such. It's even an online multiplayer. You can get it for about $5 on Amazon.com, too.

the game sounds cool and all...just imagine, if it was popular enough, you could have the whole 'storyline' from the year before, like u find out the game and stuff, and then u can build your own bot (madden: building your own team) or select from a preexisting team. In the FIRST game's case, the bots from the year before would be all loaded onto the game so you could be the driver for teams such as 25, 11, 254, the triplets, or take a rookie team to the top!!!

Sadly, some of us can only afford to build robots six weeks out of the year.

Stereotypes are bad. I used to play amateur league competitive Halo (http://www.caleague.com) and I go to the gym 5 days out of the week.

Im thinking along the same lines as Gdeaver. For the price of a gaming PC, or a good game console system you could get quite a bit of stuff from Vex

or buy a digital oscilloscope, Microchip proto boards, build an autonomous RC car or aircraft

somehow the idea of a FIRST video game just doenst feel right.

that sounds really cool, a FIRST video game. It would not only be fun to play (especially if, like someone mentioned, it was rpg) but it would also help drivers in developing their skills without having to use the robot itself the whole time. :D

Actually team 1902 is having a tour and chat with some of the professionals there next week. I will alert them to all this and maybe they could come up with something cool. My husband works there.

I could probably make a first video game on the ti-83 plus. anyone have any ideas or encouragement?( this means say yes if you want it and no if you dont).

....You know your addicted to FIRST when.... your playing a FIRST robotics video game douring algebra 2 class on your TI-83 Plus, when you don't need a calculation, because you have done problems 10 times harder while doing what you really do..... build robots....

I played Robot Arena 2 for a very long time and participated in their official forums, there was a mod for a level that involved picking up balls and putting them into a goal. All we would need is people to create levels. Also this game only allows 4 players, I guess mods could be made but honestly this has been brought up before. Getting the people to do this would be difficult but honestly if we could pull it off, wow… Also Robot Arena 2 has a easily modded part system, where we can put in the standard kit of parts and leave instructions on how to make custom parts. Just my $.02

The most simple thing of just pushing balls into a goal and getting a robot in a place at the end is probly a good start. Aslo a button to push that sends a ball into the field (human player)

Re: What if there was a FIRST Video Game

Game concept: Run around collecting robot parts

Mini games: drill hole in robot to make weight
eat pizza
guess screw threadings
fix programming errors
dodge flying shrapnel
play dodgeball

hidden difficulty: if you don't beat the game in six weeks, it EXPLODES :ahh:

I honestly think that would be an awsome thing...if there was a FIRST video game it would give everyone the opprotunity to experience something new...basicly ignite everyones interest in FIRST, by giving them a virtual hands on experience to interact with robots via video games...im all for a FIRST Video Game.

Re: What if there was a FIRST Video Game

I think a game that showed how fun FIRST can be would be amazing. It's almost impossible to describe the competition to people without seeing the energy that is there. A FIRST game would have uses for recruiting and it would be wicked fun!!! It would be pretty hard to produce a game that changed it's main game play every year. But so is building a robot in six weeks :D

OK, there's been some talk of this in another sector of the forum, but a member of my team made a really great game of this year's competition. Here's the link, it's really great:

Re: What if there was a FIRST Video Game

I think a First video game would be a great idea. One goal of First is to become a national sport isn't it? The more the name of first gets out to the country and to the world the easier this will be to accomplish. I think the game would be big and then die as all the die hard fans began joining First and giving up the virtual First. Video games are great but they will never be able to capture the true experience of First.

building the bot should be like building a mech in the series armored core... techno included.

Really, I think it is a cool idea and all, but I think people's programming talents and time would be much better spent trying to help get a universal scouting system in place... (sigh)
