CD Media Tagging - Championships or Nationals

Alright everyone, I've noticed there is a bit of discrepancy for tags on CD Media when it comes to pictures taken at Nationals, before it was called Championships, especially when it comes down to a question of whether to tag a picture "Nationals 2000" or "Championships 2000".

I've posted a poll with this so we could have a discussion and come to some sort of agreement on the question, since not everyone knows how the best way to vote on it would be. Post your thoughts on it please, so everyone will be able to clarify their stance.

Thanks!

I think the best way to do it would be to put the name according to the year like before the name change. But, also I haven't seen to many pictures tagged with "Nationals" so I voted "Championship".

Thanks Adam, you went and made me think!

Oh, and also...you should of put an option for both :p

Also take in consideration that not just teams from the U.S compete in the Championship. I don't like it when people called the competition Nationals because how does our friends from oversees feel.

my two cents

If they changed the regionals to qualifiers, I bet most people would still call them regionals.
The same thing happened with Nationals/Championships (in 2003?).
People who first attended when it was nationals will still call it nationals. Force of old habit.

I'm referring to the National events prior to when they were called the Championship, not the current ones.

I haven't attended one yet, and this is also only my second year, yet I still call them Nationals or Nats. When I talk to someone outside of FIRST I say we're attending the Championship event, but otherwise its Nationals.

I think pictures should be tagged using Championships, since it is the proper name, and not everyone knows they used to be called Nationals.

What we need to do, is create like a bajagamillion (phonetically bah-jah-gah-mih-llion) teams world wide. Then we can post Nationals pictures AND championship pictures, with no confusion.

How cool would that be.

Theres a new banner, Champion of the World.

Although remember, we would need translators there to make sure we don't run into language problems. Course we could all just talk leet or binary.

Although, Championship is more politically correct, a championship is normally for the best. Since you don't need to have won a regional, chairman's or anything like that, then it isn't of the best. If you had to win an award to make it to the Championships then it would be called Championships.

Plus it sounds funny when you say that someone's the championship champions.

Worlds would make the most sense.

I just call it Atlanta.

We usually tell non-robotics people that we are going to the World Championships. With the teams from Israel, Canada, UK, and Brazil, (I don't know if they registered, I was sitting in front of them when they qualified :) ) it really is the World Championships. Hopefully we can get more teams from outside of the US to participate.

I would vote for using the Nationals tag for older pictures when the event was called Nationals (prior to 2002, inclusive) and a Championship tag for all the pictures taken when it was called the Championships (2003 to present).

It just seems kind of weird to change the name of an event in the past because the name is different now. It's like having a regional called the [Some Company A] Regional for one year, and then called the [Different Company B] Regional the next year; all while demanding that you must refer to the regional as the Company B Regional and treat it as it it was always called the Company B Regional.

I would say try to stick with Championship (I know its hard for some, including me). You can add Nationals tags as well since you can use many tags. Maybe Brandon can put aliases in to make them the same thing.

I agree. I would tend to tag older ones personally with Nationals, and Newer ones with "Championship Event".
But, I would like to see a year added into the Tagging name standard, and also a link so when I look up just "nationals" or "championship event" all years big events come up. (From the 1 event in 1992, to the "Nationals" in Epcot, to the "Championship Event" in Houston, and Atlanta.)

Also, to go into semantics, and throw a curve ball into the mix, wouldn't the Israeli regional (at least last year when it was just open to Israeli teams) be considered a Nationals event, and yet also technically a regional event?

Exactly. To me, it was, is, and always will be Nationals, regardless of how many international teams are at the event.

Just like probably nobody who was around for the "edubot" called it "robovation" when it's name changed.

Just to be precise, the Israeli regional was open for only Israeli teams this year too, and I assume it will stay that way for a few years (how many teams would really come to Israel for a regional when you have 32 in the US?)

About nationals or championship...as an Israeli I don't really care. We usually just call it Atlanta. But I guess if we were going to be correct, then it is better to use "Championship event".
