Old Robots?
Veteran teams who have at least one post competition robot, what do you do with those old ones once they finish the FIRST season?
We've never been to an offseason event, so once competition is done theyre totally retired. We didn't keep our rookie bot and scrapped one other for room (a sad loss). The rest we keep in our closet and use them for demos and such. We are thinking of having a new members project be to better the robots (fix up messy wiring jobs etc). |
Re: Old Robots?
I think using them for new member workshops and such is always a good idea. Have them work over the whole machine, examining how all of the systems function and how the parts were designed/fabricated. Maybe even have them disassemble the whole machine to understand how it all works and functions, then reassemble it to get a feel for putting the parts together.
Driving practice is always another very useful thing to do with the robots, especially if you have more than one which I know you guys do. You could separate members into groups and set them against each other to practice strategic driving. Just a few thoughts. |

Re: Old Robots?
Well with our 2005 bot, we keep it together for our sponsers because it was their money we used to build it plus it helps to show rookies and potential rookies how each system or mechanism works.
|
Re: Old Robots?
We use our robots for rookie training (they have to make spare/replacement parts, re-wire parts, etc) and for demonstrations in the community and abroad (take the old robots into schools and let students and teachers drive them).
|
Re: Old Robots?
Our 2003 Robot is completely disassembled. It's plywood base is currently being used on our carts.
Our 2004 Robot is currently completely functional and stationed at one of the two school. (The one where we don't hold out meetings) Our 2005 Robot is currently completely functional and is in the school where we have our meetings. And yeah, same for this years. |
Re: Old Robots?
Most of our old robots (or frames/parts) of old robots are on our "walk of fame", if you will. We basically have them lined up in chronological order. We use them mainly as a junkyard of parts. We pull victors and other parts we use off of them so we don't have to always buy new ones. Some are fully in tact.
|
Re: Old Robots?
We keep all of our old robots in our museam and keep our practice robot to loan out to a rookie for the Rah Cha Cha Ruckus (at least we did last year to Delta Force) and when the new season begins we use it to design the prototype for next year's bot.
|
Re: Old Robots?
2001, I believe it needs electronics and a new axle for the arm
2002, needs electronics and drill motor. 2003, needs the arms put back on, still have them, and intact, but it is a fully functional drive base 2004, needs electronics and sprockets and chain put back on the arm 2005, I think it is good to go 2006a, fully functional. Needs some backlash taken out of the azimuth control 2006b, needs shooter or ground pickup, basket, drive motors wired, chains, and some other electronics 2006c, not much left. Frame and wheels. But, we still have all of them. We are quickly running out of room though |
Re: Old Robots?
We keep our rookie robot intact due to our mentors' sentiments.
The 2002, 2003, and 2004 robots were all dismantled this year by eager recruits to learn a little about how they worked (or didn't) Last years robot is in full working condition, during the off season we added closed loop positioning of the forklift. This years robot will not be dismantled either, because it was our most successful robot to date (we were seeded in the top 10 at WI). We are planning to demo the robots for the incoming freshman classes to build interest in our program. One idea we had was to have the 2005 bot dunk poof balls at basketball games and the other to shoot baskets (it works surprisingly well) to show off for the sports crowds and convince them to buy lots of raffle tickets... We are also planning to add the video camera to this years bot because we didn't get to it during the season. |

2000 (465) Disassembled
2001 (465) Disassembled 2002 (862) Forklifts and hook removed, sometimes used for joy riding in the school hallways 2003 (862) Disassembled (not that sad of a loss) 2004 (862) Needs a new drive shaft and it should work, now it sits in a corner at our school and we look at it to make ourselves feel better about current robots 2005 (862) Fully operational used for demos , sitting at our school 2006 (862) Worked last time we saw it, In a bright orange box somewhere |

Yeah I usually go back to my old high school and help with minor projects with the robot (maintenance, OI - RC troubleshooting, adaptation of parts from a new year build season to an older year robot, etc.... - This only happens on a as needed basis since the robots are not used all that often. =( too bad no one has thought of having FIRST the Classics off season competition where one game from the past is played and any robot may compete. I bet that would get some of these robots dusted and lubbed up pretty quickly) their rookie year robot has been retired indefinitely and when ever the thought to using the robot for public relations and such crosses anyones mind a quick NO gets voiced =) - Yep shes just that special. the 2002 robot which is currently on loan for another team (which is a rookie a team) so that they may see how a robot is built, wired and should work. the 2003 robot works but is currently been placed out of service due to some parts being needed to be duplicated and be used as a tentative idea for a 2004 robot. 2004 & 2005 & 2006 Robots is in great condition and is actively playing the roll of driver tryouts, public relations and other fun things. And when the girls aren't being used they are situated in such a way that when you enter robotics HQ they look as if they are guards at the door just waiting to search someone. =) - BTW i refuse to mention which team this is only b/c its a secret =) |

we use ours to do emos during the new season!! well i g2g ttyl byees
|
Re: Old Robots?
We usually canibalize them for random parts and such. Mainly the electrical board. We didn't do that to our last year robot because of it's performance but it's still retired because it's broken from the hard fall we took in the last match of our most recent competition.
|
Re: Old Robots?
the robots that preform well last much longer than the ones that don't. our 2005 robot is functioning just as well as the day it started competing last year. its actually in my living room right now because we demo'd it at an FLL competition this weekend. robots that haven't preformed as well get disassembled IN sort of a gradient the worse t5hey are the more pieces they are in. until you get to the ones that dint preform at all they are completely in tact kinda of taking up space. out 2002 robot is in one piece in out shop kind of on display. our 2003 robot the one that's 10.5' wide was striped down ans is now a shelf that holds our trophy's in the shop. the 2004 robot is striped of a drive chain a controller and any wires. but is still essentially in one piece.
|
Re: Old Robots?
2001 - needs to be wired, no idea what happened to the wiring
2002 - fully functional 2003 - needs some minor wiring, used as our primary display bot 2004 - ugh, we couldnt get half the stuff on this bot to work at the competition, it needs alot 2005 - 704 didnt participate in FIRST 2006 - In Fedex's hands - somewhere. We have all of the bots on display in our lab, sometimes we display one of them in the library. |
Re: Old Robots?
We took our 2003 robot and equiped it with a t-shirt cannon, which we use at school events and took with us to the 2005 ramp riot off season event. Our '04 and '05 bots are dismantled, I believe.
|
Re: Old Robots?
Our 2005 bot is currently in the rebuild state. The electronics on it were like a rats nest and we desided to fix it. We are also talking about modifing it to work for this years game. We were thinking of leting rookies from our team and other drive it at any off season competitions we go to. All the robots prior to 2003 have been dismantled, exept i belive one of them is in a museum somewhere, at least thats what our one mentor said, not sure on what year it is though.

Re: Old Robots?
1999 (309) - I have never seen this robot. Nor have I ever seen pictures of it.
2000 (309) - Do we still have the base? I know we have the basket sitting in the corner of Ken-Tronics. 2001 (648) - 95% intact. Almost completely functional. 2002 " - WAS completely intact before this year. Now there is no basket. 2003 " - It's completely intact. There's not much use for an obsolete drive system as far as our team is concerned. 2004 " - ~75% intact. Arm is not working. Used mostly as test driving. 2005 " - 100% intact. Perfect and best performing robot. 2006 " - ?? Will most likely stay intact. Not sure if it's arrived yet from Michigan. All of these robots 2001-2005 and up are on a shelf above our work station. Hopefully we can get some of them into the local children's museum. |
Re: Old Robots?
The Robonauts now have a "plan" for old 'bots. We keep two robots fully functional; Chainzilla (2005) & Magnum (2006) will be dancing until the 2007 robot comes online, then Chainzilla will be retired most probably to help new teams. For example, Immobilus (2003) and Telescorpio (2004) both went to Louisiana and Mississippi for rookie Katrina Teams. Telescorpio was our first crab-drive thus had substantial sentimental value but reports are that Telescorpio loves her new home ... PRICELESS. I hope someday that FIRST enacts a rule that allows rookie teams the use of manufactured parts from a donated robot; maybe the rule should include a weight limit ... how about 40 lbs.
Although only time will tell, we may have to hold onto Magnum for several years because, like most of the other shooters around the country, it is a real crowd pleaser. Since Magnum is already gymnasium compatible with its no-scrub crab drive, we don't believe it will be to difficult to make it a half-court-shooting robot. With a few programming mods, we eventually hope to just have to place the green light directly below the goal on a 3 foot stand and start shooting 3 pointers. CHALLENGE: A dozen Krispy Kreamers to the first team to make a three-pointer during a break at an NBA game. Have a nice Easter, Lucien |
Re: Old Robots?
Our old robots are used for drivers practice and 'fix-it' practice.
We warm up our skills by fixing old ones and if we need another robot to practice driving with - say defense or the practice bot is in repair - we use the old ones. Pat summed up our old robots pretty good here However for the community we have CASEY |

Chuck and TechnoKats are on the same path with this. But we usually have the last one or two reserved for practice and in-season demos. We even have the first Chuck, even though he's a mere skeleton of his original self--he's from back in the days when you had to send your control system back.

Re: Old Robots?
2001-OCCAM...dead...
2002-OCCAM II only a frame and some electronics 2003-OCCAM III fully functional 2004-OCCAM IV fully functional, minus a few components 2005-OCCAM V one victor needs to be fixed and the telescoping arm is dead 2006-OCCAM VI a war hero, pickup device broke when we crated it after VCU we like to show-off at middle schools with 2003, mostly. it was our best ever and being for the most part a box on wheels it is easy shipping |
Re: Old Robots?
All of the old MOEs are slowly stripped of parts - the first original MOE from 2000 has nothing left except the frame. We don't have enough storage space to keep many of them around.
One exception - the 2001 MOE - "Lil MOE" - is kept running for demonstrations for two reasons. One, it is the 2001 National Champion! Two, it is small and compact and easy to take around to various locations. It also has an arm (orginally designed to lift the ramp from that year's game) that we put a glove on and use to wave to little kids. They love it. |
Re: Old Robots?
We use our old robots for rookie training, public demonstrations, driver practice and to help mentor new teams.
This past fall we helped Team 1712, Dawgma by retro-fitting our 2003 Gallileo Champion robot to pick up Tetras. This allowed the team to compete at Ramp Riot and gain valuable experience. It was also a great experience for our team to get some build time and help others. Keep those old robots if you can spare the room!!! |
Re: Old Robots?
2002 - completely functional; a mentor tuned it up last year and it's currently at a local science center
2003 - mostly disassembled; it still mostly looks at the robot that made it to the competition but all of the electronics are gone and possibly a couple wheels 2004 - completely functional; at the school 2005 - completely functional with an improved autonomous mode, but at the moment a couple PWM cables have been borrowed for our 2006 robot. It's at the school. 2006 - on its way to Atlanta |
Re: Old Robots?
Last I saw, Eric (2005) and Stealth Hedgehog (2003) were at the back of one of the Physics labs. We don't have any off-season events around here to my knowledge so we are restricted really to demos and using them for testing to try and give our Rookies some practice for Jan.
Eric is in good condition, used for programming practice during this years build season. Stealth Hedgehog has seen better days but is repairable, unless our electronics wizzes have repaired it without me knowing... Oh, and one of our other robots was taken by some of our old students and is in Southampton or Winchester I think... |
Re: Old Robots?
we keep all of our robots it will be 11 this year. for the off season events we use our practice robot so we can modify it if we want after the season so the competition robot is put on a shelf that we built against the wall in our competition room. we use them for new ideas for the game we are building for and we also look at them for ideas for our OCCRA robots. OCCRA is Oakland County Competitive Robotics Competition which is 100% student built robots and no adult mentors can help. Plus i have only been here for 2 years but it is interesting to look back at what we started with and where we are now. :)

Re: Old Robots?
We recycle parts of our old robots for the new robots. One of them was disassembled to play around with in the beginning of this year and the others are missing parts. I believe that this year's robot is the only fully functioning robot(which could have changed) and that one is sitting somewhere in this school building.

Re: Old Robots?
We usually take apart the old robots to help new kids to get a feel of what building and such is like.
Last year we dismantled Robogeet [first year robot] and Belladonna [second year girl's robot] -- and we combined em to form -- BELLAJEET! It was mostly for show than anything else. This year we dismantled Dark Knight [second year boy's robot] so the new grade 9 and 10 kids could get a feel for working with robots and such -- we didn't really put it all back together. However -- we refuse to allow anyone to touch last year's robot -- The Grip -- thats our pride and joy [made us proud in ATL]--! |
Re: Old Robots?
Unfortunatly, only the 2005's robot has been left intact. The rest of the bots are in a room called the "morgue" and are randomly pillaged for parts during the build season. :(
|
Re: Old Robots?
Like most other teams we strip our old robots down. Some parts we keep intact like the drive train to train next years programmers on during our R&D period. It is kinda sad tho to see all that work taken apart but it just mean u get to make a new better one...yay

We keep our robot around for teaching rookies and for demonstrations. We usually keep most of them around. we currently have two laying around. One I used this year in november to test code, I was the only programmer and a rookie! and it saved my life and lessened the learning curve for the six weeks.

Re: Old Robots?
675 has a CMUCam test platform called "Cambot" made of 80/20 and old parts.
675 has a KitBot chassis from '07 with electronics from last year + this year's pneumatics as a test platform for 4-speed pneumatic shifting transmissions. 675 has no other old robots. We've dismantled them. Gloria will probably be turned into a new Cam test platform. |
Re: Old Robots?
Old Beachbot status:
1998 - You remember that warehouse scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark? It's there somewhere. 1999 - we still have a few pieces around 2000 - Same as 1999 2001 - used as a test bed for 2002 drive, now it is a backup robot cart and is mostly stripped 2002 - Needs new trannys, a couple of cylinders, and a brain 2003 - still runs but won't shift, trannys are worn out 2004 - Became 2005 practice bot, used this year for gripper development still runs but needs original software re-installed to work as designed 2005 - (Champ Robot) tends to get modified less than the rest, but was picking up tubes by 5pm on Kickoff day 2006 - Camera test platform As you can see, early on we scrapped our robots. But more recently we have learned that having a fleet of robots with different capabilities can be real handy. For example, while 05 was physically similar to our final design it was strictly electric powered, but 04 had a pre-existing pnuematic system and a pivoting arm. So 04 was used to develop our arm and gripper, at least until our 07 practice bot came on-line. |
Re: Old Robots?
we've been a team for four years and as far as i know
2004 First robot: sitting in the back of our workroom gets stripped a lot 2005 Second robot: we used the base the next year and all parts were stripped 2006 Third robot: we used base again used electronics for programming and are using electronics now to create a chair to drive around 2007 Fourth robot: in atlanta |
Re: Old Robots?
At the moment, we still have several off-season competitions that we are going to.
We built a practice robot, so if anyone comes up between now and River Rage and puts out that they'd like to start a team, they can use that one. Right now they aren't exactly in working condition, but it wouldn't take long to get them to be. Our 2006 and 2005 robots were stripped completely of their electronics and now we're just using them for historical reference. The ball pickup mechanism worked beautifully on the 2006 robot. And then there are going to be plenty of demos and stuff that we'll be doing. Our robot does more work in the off-season than during the official competitions. |
Re: Old Robots?
1618 has three robots thus far.
The 2005 robot was stripped for parts before I joined the team--about all that's left is the frame and electronics panel, which was used to build a pneumatics demonstration setup before Kickoff. During the season, the robot was rigged back up for testing the BaneBots transmissions, with interesting results. (It wasn't the carrier plates.) The 2006 robot is still largely in one piece. We robbed some Victors and the Maxi block for Uppercut, our 2007 robot, and stuck in the 2005 breaker panel. We also borrowed the 2006 RC for testing when the 2007 RC's spade terminals came out, but that can go back in without incident. I'm hoping that we can get it back up and running this summer. Uppercut is already back at school, and made the trip in one piece. The arm tower is a little bent from where we tipped trying to get off of 1251 at the end of qualifying (we never used the arm in eliminations, so we left it), the graphics are a little scratched (we can print new ones), and the front bumper's got a few hits on it (gee, wonder where those came from). I'm hoping that we can keep this one together (save the standard Victor-stealing) for a long while--it's a really awesome robot when it works as intended (and even when it doesn't!). |
Re: Old Robots?
As i said in a earlier post from last year all of our robots from before 2003 are gone.
2003- has gone through some minor changes, took off all the phumatics, and repaired the drive motors many times. It is now a t-shirt cannon that we use at different events, hopefully this year though it is going to be put up just as a display model. 2004- is gone 2005- has been torn apart. the drive base may be used as a tank/ chair robot to sit and drive around on, or maybe a kid friendly robot. The mast is going to be used as our air tank for the new t- shirt cannon that we are making. 2006- it is still fully together, we have made some minor changes like making the roller system more stable, and we also use it to test programing for the 2007 robot. 2007- is back at home in the shop. It had some small problems that needed fixed, but its running as good as new now. Hopefully it will stay around for awhile. |
Re: Old Robots?
Ours are sitting in a corner in our workshop (maintenance garage). We tore the 2006 bot up a bit this year, but we're trying to get it back together sometime.
I've heard rumors that our robots are going to the future Caterpillar museum here in Peoria. I'm not exactly sure when the museum will be finished, or if our robots are going to be on display or stuffed in storage, but it would be really cool if they were displayed for the public. |
Re: Old Robots?
418 has been lucky so far in that our robots remain pretty much in tact year to year. Because we have participated in BEST for many years as well as FIRST, we have robots varying in sizes with stories and history attached. Several of the smaller robots decorate the classroom walls of our coach and lead teacher, Mr. Bertucci. In the metal shop there is storage for robots and for the tool cart. We've gotten rather creative with our storage and it becomes somewhat of a dance to access the older ones when they are needed. We pulled out our FIRST 2004 robot at the beginning of build to take some photos of a lift mechanism for another team. To access that robot, it took 3 of us and a carefully choreographed movement of robots and people to bring the robot out of storage and into the metal shop for photographing.
We also have old bicycles stored/displayed along one of the walls of the metal shop that have been built and there is always something coming in: old wheel chairs, bicycles, etc for future projects. It is nice that we have the space we do in the classroom and metal/wood shops to be able to use our robots for demos, training, and as a showcase for future students and guests. When unexpected visitors drop by, we can usually be found in the 'cage' either doing a simple demo or choreographing a moving 'dance', usually involving the guests. They have always loved it. |
Re: Old Robots?
We have the entire 04 bot sitting in our mentor's physics room. The 05 bot is only a drive train (the arm if off rusting somewhere), and is slowly being cannibalized for off season projects. Our 06 bot, AimBot, is sitting pretty much intact inside our shipping container that we use for storage. The 07 bot, FloJo, just got back and did a nice PR run during a school assembly, and will be kept up and running for recruiting purposes.
|
Re: Old Robots?
Update: Our 2005 and 2006 robots run perfectly and flawlessly. The only thing changed in those two robots was that there was a prototype of this year's manipulator added to it. It's nice to have three running robots and hopefully we'll be able to utilize this... someday.
|
Re: Old Robots?
Usually we keep the pervious year bot for driver practice but all the other bots are against the wall being adored by those who built them sometimes we take parts or sample ideas from them
|
Re: Old Robots?
We keep the arms from our old bots.
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/20009 The only thing that's left from our 97,99, and 00 are the arms shown there. The 2001, 2003, 2004, one of the 2005s and both 2006s are all basically stripped. Some of them have been used in past years for prototyping and off season projects, but none of them run anymore. One of our 2005 robots is still whole and working, minus the gripper. We use it to play defense for drive practice, and we did some prototyping with it this year. The 2002 robot is still totally intact and hopefully soon I'll have an update for everyone about it. One of the things I would like to do this summer is take apart all the old robots once and for all. They are taking up a lot of space at our facility and aren't being used for anything. If anyone wants a 'classic' red plywood robot frame, let me know. ;) |
Re: Old Robots?
2000 - Still Complete and working as it was in 2001
2001 - Gone 2002 - Gone 2003 - Still Complete and working as it was in 2003 2004 - Mostly complete, now a T-Shirt shooter 2005 - stripped to the base and we're going to battle it with our 06' robot and 03' robot to get new members 2006 - stripped to the base and we're going to battle it with our 05 robot and 03' robot to get new members 2007 - waiting in Atlanta to compete After the battle we are adding a chair to the 06' robot and adding on a more powerful t-shirt shooter made out of an old freon tank |
Re: Old Robots?
we have most, if not all of our old bots lined up against the wall in our shop. some of them have been cannibalized for parts (we took the board off last year's bot for some testing). basically we like to break out our 06 bot to play three flies up during club day signups. we also have a bot that pulls around a chair. i think next year we'll unleash Thor and some ringers to pin them on students and staff!
we do have a problem, though. we are running out of space. maybe i'll post a pic when we get back from break... |
Re: Old Robots?
Hello...
So far we've kept all of ours, although the 2005 robot had a couple of spare parts taken off as backups for competition this year (since returned to it). Our lead teacher has a thing about keeping and saving them (but is not beyond using them during competetion for parts). The 2005 robot is the only robot that has Pneumatics so thats another good reason to keep it intact. We will use all three for demos this year and the 2007 one will be used for off season events later in the year. All three are also used for teaching and reference sources. We plan to build another robot off season for testing such things as Mecanum wheels and programming. Doing these things helps the students we have keep up on stuff and helps recruit new students to the program. During the build season this year the 2005 robot was used for testing programming and the 2006 robot not only used for programming, but driven on our playing feild while practicing with the 2007 robot to give the drivers more of a feel for competiton. The former driver for team 616 (Kyle J.) drove our 2006 one and knows very well what to do. He's a mentor for us now and we greatly appreciate what He does for us. |
