Gali-leo!

1 Attachment(s)
I figured it was about time for us to get a Galileo thread started. What does everyone think of our division this year?

EDIT:
I've attatched a list of all the teams attending with the number of regional finalist/win placements as well as all team awards listed (MSword format). From the looks of it, it's going to be one tough division, but I can't wait!
Also, I've added my first attempt at a Galileo userbar; I'll edit the image as I refine it. (Append: Second edit) .gif second userbar up. I'm thinking the shading needs to be worked on, but I'm only using userbarmaker.com and MSpaint. plus, I should really do my calculus now. I'll make them look nice later. Cheerio!

Notice: I've made an error with team 291's information in the .zip. It should read:
2006 PIT KPC&B Entrepreunership
2006 PIT J&J Sportsmanship
2006 PIT UL Industrial Safety Award
I'll change this as soon as I'm not on a school computer (i.e. one that can unzip/zip files).

8 teams from Philly Regional by my count:
173, 177, 291, 306, 341, 365, 444, & 716
Including the entire Winning Alliance!
Funny how division assignments work. There were alot of Galileo Philly teams last year.
Speaking of odd occurrences, it does look like we will be pitted next to 384 for the 4th straight year as Joe Matt said. Unfortunately, 358 will not be on the other side, like the last 2 years.

We always end up in Galileo for some reason when we go to the championship.

I wonder if we pit numerically or we will do the highest # lowest # end in the middle method the other regionals I've been to used.

BTW I hoping for numerically because then we're next to our local friends Rage and my alma mater (undergrad) WPI.

It looks pretty tough. I know Me and the rest of the team 494 gang are pretty pumped. Getting to play with teams like 16, 27, 45, 67, 173, 177, 190, 211, 237, 269, 341, 365, 384, 547, 716, 766, 989, 1014, 1126, 1276, 1319, 1403, 1506, 1625, 1747 will be an honor not to mention all the other strong teams. I must say that the fact that at least 1 regional winner if not more won't be in the playoff rounds is quite shocking!

I'm extremely excited to be playing in the Galileo division!
I'm happy to have a great division chant this year. Being in Newton, it's not as easy of a chant.
"Iss-ac New-ton" vs. "Gali-leo": No contest. Galileo wins.
I also made a Galileo userbar if anyone is interested. Just don't use the same link location as mine, save it to somewhere you can host from; I don't want to overuse mine.

I am so excited to be playing in the Galileo division this year. I think that there are alot of strong teams in this division, and whoever represents Galileo on Einstein will give the other divisions a sure run for their money. (Personally, I hope 716 is one of them... the ultimate way for me to end my senior year would be a division win!)

As I posted in the official 2006 Championship Divisions thread, these are the teams I am going to be watching the most on Galileo.

1. I am curious why you did not mention 1126 on your list. Aren't they capable of scoring 40 pts in the game.

I can tell you that 1276 was mentioned because they are excelent at scoring, can push almost anyone around and are extremely hard to push around with their 6 traction wheels and AM shifters. The reason that they haven't been mentioned much is that the reletive power rankings don't have all of the information from Manchester, their only regional where they pretty much dominated.

The top ten bots

1.177-2 regionals is hard to beat
2.1126-can't start a fire without Sparx
3.173-this pick enrages me
4.494-they are out of this world :D
5.16-Bomb Squad nuff said
6.1276-Best Blitz other than a football team
7.384-Sparky was a great bot at VCU
8.365-You have to be green to be seen and they are seen
9.1625-There is a reason Win is in their name
10.547-I F.E.A.R. them

Honorable mention
27
67
74
201
211
237-Could easily move up, and are in a good spot

I forgot 1126. The list I typed out there was done by memory, not from any official stats. It's a combination of what I have observed, and what I remember hearing about on CD.

173 - has shown great promise since the beginning of the season in terms of shooting and playing defense.
830 - even though their statistics aren't "stellar" (due to bad luck), they have been a solid, reliable shooter throughout the season. A good second pick during alliance selections.
1276 - as explained above, 1276 has made a name for themselves as a shooter.
1784 - a great defensive/maneuverable robot, and have had an impressive performance their rookie season. They are also very cooperative alliance partners. Would make a great second pick during alliance selections.

173 was pretty much the only bot we couldn't push sideways at Philly... That means that they deserve to be mentioned. That, and the fact that they score like nobodies business! I think that we need to stop mentioning people based on their various rankings, and start mentioning them based on their actual performance. Quite a few of the teams that haven't been mentioned yet will probably be top contenders.

I'm really surprised about one team though. 118 has only been mentioned a few times, and the only time 118 didn't score in autonomous was when they got rammed so hard there robot turned around.

Also, does anyone have video of 237, especially in autonomous? I've heard they shot in auto, and considering their past autonomouses, and teaser video, they must be fairly good at it.

I would everyone to watch the finals of the Lone Star Regional in the NASA archive. We have 3 teams from the Finals: 231 (AC Champion), 118 (AC Finalist), and 418. It took 3 matches to decide it between these great bots.

im not quite sure if there are any videos up of us up yet, im sure there will be though. also we shot well in auton at the UTC regional, we had alot of camera problems at the Chesapeake regional partially due to the fact there was alot of natural light.

MasonMM 19-04-2006 14:26

Re: Gali-leo!

231 builds quality robots. They had two robots pushing on them and still were able to score balls. And not to mention, when they bring out the defensive game they can dominate.

118 got autonomous working just before the eliminations, and it worked out amazingly. Those finals at lone star are great matches, quite competitive, it's a shame 118 had to end it fallen over.

i was a volunteer at the Philly regional helping wiht team queing. one thing i noticed in the elimnation rounds is that that by the elimination rounds, the philly teams started to play more and more defense. and if i remember correctly, the winning alliance, was a very defensive alliance. and there was only one shooter in either of the alliances in the finals. i figured since philly was in the last week of regionals, many teams did their scouting and found strategies to to stop great shooting teams(such as 103, 272, 341, 365, 433, teams which dominated qualifying rounds). but in earlier regionals, many shooting teams won.
so the question is, what type of game do you feel is going to be played at championships. more defense, or more offense?

I think in a Regional you tend to see that because the team pool is only half of what it will be in the Championship divisions. I believe this game will end up very similar to last years, you will be able to win with one or two robots playing defense during the Qualifications. Once the divisions move to Einstein the game will be predominantly offensive, just as last years was. There will be many good 3-scorer alliances in the divisional playoffs.

The robot was designed as an autonomous 3 point shooter. We turned out drive train sideways and it is awesome. Bad luck with equipment and partners gave us a low ranking at the NJ regional. The judges noticed us, but the other teams didn't. So goes random pairings.

Considering what we have read here, we will change our strategy. A lot of luck goes into being a top eight seed so we will focus on getting noticed by one of those teams. Since there so many big guns out there, we will be focusing on defense. Our goal is to be noticed as the utility defense bot that can score if needed if our big gun partner goes down. Our main task is to shut down the top shooter on the other team. Its not that we can't shoot, we can, but rather play a team strategy. Also, we can harvest from the floor. Top loader big guns may like this in a partner.

I think the ideal team has two big guns and one bully. In my opinion a three point shooting bully (us) is better than a dumper.

Thats my sales pitch. Keep an eye out for us. You can't miss the sideways drive train and GIANT green bicycle wheel shooter.

TEAM 637

Good Luck All

looking through team records, we have a lot of solid teams in our division. I've noticed my two top teams from Boilermaker (135, 1038). Also, 1625 was killing those chains with Wildstang in the auton at Wisconsin. Also, if I'm not mistaken, I SEE MARTIANS (494). Always good to be with t-kats as well.

Shout out to 537 and 1103, the two other Wisconsin teams in our division.

T-minus one hour before my team meets to get on the bus.

Team 1604 would like to ask other gracious teams in Galileo to help cheer for us with our 1604 mini hurricane flags because we are only bringing four students, leaving not much of a cheering section in the stands. Thanks all, can't wait to see you there.

We'll be cheering good and loud for all Galileo teams! I'm sitting in our hotel room at the Days Inn, and I'm really pumped for tomorrow. Look for the guys with the shiney gold pants! Also a shout out to 1511 Rolling Thunder, who are great floor-mates!

Im looking for a post of the times(before the matches) and results of the matches... i want to keep track of times, when certain teams will be playing today Friday and sat... so a list of times of matches before the day start would be awesome! Ive looked through us first.org and i couldn't find a list of times for practice matches... i hope they post the qualification matches.

they will probably be posted in the morning... teams usually walk in and there is a schedule laid out in the pits for them, and they come up online around the same time.

Re: Gali-leo!

The best 3-2 record team has 46.2 point average and is ranked 17 after day 1. They must be a goot shooter to get the great point total.

Since we play good defence our point total is 19.6. Good defence means your opponent can't score so you don't get ranking points. Same 3-2 record gets us ranked 41. oh well...We feel real good about it any way.

I hope the scouts can see through this when it comes time to pick a defender for their allience.

Good Luck All

Can anyone fill me in on what happened in finals? I was watching on the monitors in the pits, but I am a bit confused.

According to the FIRST web site, there were three matches in the finals, all of which were won by blue. Did red actually win the first, or was there some other wierdness? And what happened after the final match? I just saw one robot fly off the ramp and balls flying everywhere. Did autonomous get enabled again accidently?

I was sorta disappointed that there wasn't any rookie teams selected in the Galileo Division finals. Of course, that might just be because i'm on a rookie team. ;) But is this typical at the championships?

Ashley,

Has this been typical in years past? No... Will it be typical in the future? Yes... Let's look at some numbers:

There were 33 regionals this year. That means that a potential 198 teams (not counting "repeats") were either finalists or regional winners.

The four divisions in Atlanta sent a total of 98 teams to the elimination rounds.

I would hazard a guess that each division had a few finalists and perhaps even a regional winner who were not selected. It is not surprising that our division fielded no rookie teams in the eliminations.

As the number of regionals grows, this aspect of the game will become more and more skewed. In fact, FIRST will someday be forced to change it's championship eligibility criteria...

I hope that this adds perspective to your observation.

Good Luck.

Mike

Re: Gali-leo!

Thanks to all who made Gali-leo the place to be this past week. Emcee and announcers were great - fun and exciting. The teams were energetic and high on GP.

Kudos to all the volunteers on the Gali-leo field also. The field ran smoothly the whole competition.

MOE 365 would like to thank all of our alliance partners through the qualifying matches and a special thanks to teams 1038 and 291 for being our partners in the eliminations. We made a terrific team.

Enjoy the off-season, everyone!!!!

P.S. If anyone is interested, Duel on the Delaware is scheduled for October 21, 2006. We would love to see Galileo teams attend!

Re: Gali-leo!

I would like to thank the emcee Blair for being such a great sport. Team 1403 orchestrated some tricks and stunts while we were being announced. We got all of our allies to show their GP as they all agreed to join us in the crazy stunts we pulled. In our last qualifying match we even got our opponents to join us for the fun. Their was no shortage of GP on the galileo field.

Some of the stunts for those of you who missed it:
1. Our alliance ran out into the field and hugged Blair(our hp accidently stepped on the MOE flag and he took a tumble but laughed the whole way down :p )
2. Our alliance slammed our hands on the player station as we were being called and cleaned it off with windex
3. Our alliance ran out into the field and did the limbo
4. We got our alliance and our opponent's alliance to "party boy" Blair out on the field. It was great seeing our opponents and our allies doing this b/c this proves that GP triumphs over all... and it is as simple as that

Thank you to all the volunteers that made this event possible and to all those who cheered us on as we performed each of our stunts. :)

If anyone has any pics or video I would love to have them. I am trying to find some video and I'll try to post it soon!

GO 1403!!!

Great job to 1403 for orchestrating all the fun during the announcement of teams during your matches.

I didn't see all of it, but I was present for the group bear hug of Blair. It was great! His comments immediately after were hilarious.

Thanks for making Galileo the place to be!

That was a lot of fun! I'm glad we were able to get in on it.
