...you schedule your spring semester college classes around your team's build schedule. No lie, I made sure that my classes allowed me to get out to the high school about half-hour after the meeting starts.

When you are annoyed that a day is a holiday, because that means you can't go to school and test the code you were awake since kickoff writing. Oh, and when you take apart a lasertag gun to see if the IR is compatible with and legal for use on your bot, just in case the next year's game is lasertag of sorts. You know you're overdosed on FIRST when...your idea of a date night away from the 4 kids (ages 16, 14, 2, and 1) OR your 2nd date with a girl...is to go to the local high school and help the robotics team...:yikes:
Swear on my life true stories...the first is a local engineer who is mentoring for the first time and wanted to show his wife what we do, they stayed for 2 hours instead of going out to eat and the second is our high school welding teacher who on their second date said "I need to run by the high school real quick" and ended up staying for an hour and a half to weld parts of our kicker together...:D P.S. Both women proved how cool they were by 1: Not killing their date/husband and 2: Actually asking questions and commenting on how much fun it looked like we were having... |

when you have perfect attendance for build season and still get up early on your day off school to be at the build site at 10 am because you don't want to be accused of having senioritis
when you're youtube account has more videos of your robot on it than the team's youtube account when you go to the build site from 10am til 4pm, go to work til 8pm, and then go back to the build site when you spend 3 hours cleaning up the electrical guys area and then go on to clean the rest of the site because it will be a safer working environment for the team when you have science teachers down the hall for a professional development day and as they are leaving the building they all end up stopping by the build room because they have all heard about the team from their students |

You work late on Sunday night, write down a list of food to get and the McDonalds is closed, and your parents aren't going to whip up 2 dozen burgers at the last minute, and you have to pack the robot up the next day for shipment, with an openhouse the next monday that has been announced over the PA at school that claims the robot is already done, and the robot doesn't do half of what it is supposed to do, and one joystick is accidentally unplugged, resulting a half-hour of delays.

You suddenly realize that you are the only Junior on the team, the only programmer for this year, have no practical experience machining raw aluminum, and the guys who know anything worthwhile are Seniors, and the Sophomores spend all of their time on Facebook, while the Freshmen just stand around.

--all your current inside jokes are from robotics --you can say exactly what your team members and mentors are thinking, because your thinking the same thing --working from 10am till 11pm is an improvement from last year --you call your mentors by their first name with out a second thought --you put robotics before your 500 point research paper due tommorrow --school is cancelled tomorrow, and the robotics team has already made plans for going in and working. --your parents use not going to robotics as a threat --your parents cant carry through on that threat because they have to be there as well --you wish your teachers would give an extension on all assignments till after the shipdate --dont understand why teachers dont give extensions for their assignments till after shipdate --you treat your robot like a dog, (i.e. whistling for it to come, yelling at the robot to stop and not the driver) --deciding that posting on CD is more important than sleep --wondering why your robotics team only has 11 members --wondering how 11 people managed to build a robot in 6 weeks --you decided that going without dinner to get the baller catcher done is a good idea |

some of your buddies go to sleep at midnight from a night of building, then get up at four in the morning to machine some more parts, then skip all of school to work on the robot, and are prepared to go all the way to midnight again (7 hours and 12 minutes to bagging!!!!!), and some new code has yet to be tested with a completely different design than yesterday.

You graduate High School, go onto a very tough engineering school, and neglect do your homework, watch the webcast for your home regional all of saturday and sunday from 800 miles away, then break your glasses, wake up your roomate by yelling so loudly and almost cry when your team wins the Chairman's Award, and then start looking for flights back to New Jersey.
I'm in love with FIRST. There's no other explanation. |

The program has to be changed in about ten different places for every revision of the mechanical parts, and you consider it a halfway decent challenge juggling school, FIRST, driver's ed, track, eating and sleep (in order of importance ;) ).
