Size Down Those Signatures!

Hey everyone,

This may be long, but bear with me, I have a point (for once  ). For the record, I run 1280x800 pixels on my screen. I've been looking around the forums over the past few weeks, and I've been noticing people who have had excessively large signatures, some even to the point of taking up a page and a half of my screen (not mentioning any names here).

I do know about the other threads relating to this, but there hasn't been one in over a year, and resurrecting the last one might not have as much impact.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a signature nazi, who complains about someone's signature being a few pixels over the limit, but many people are just outright disregarding the rule and disregarding gracious professionalism, just because "it isn't enforced."

The forum rules state:
Quote:

All rules detailed here apply to signatures, as well. Signatures should not be larger than 200px tall (all images, text, etc.). For reference, this is 200px. Due to abuse and a large amount of complaints, politically oriented content should not be placed in your signature. The ChiefDelphi.com administrators may edit your signature at any time, without warning or notification, to remove any content which breaks these rules.
Yet day in, and day out, I can take 10 random threads out of the portal and find several people who violate such a simple rule of courtesy and respect. It isn't very hard to keep a signature under 200 pixels.

Until now, I was happy to just sit by, and negative rep people as they went by for grossly large signatures, and then I got a nice reply to one of the post I negative rep'ed telling me to live with it because they don't care what I think. I won't post any names or any direct quotes out of respect for them, but I was utterly shocked that a mentor of a well-respected team would act in such a way.

For those who follow the rule, you're awesome. It isn't something hard to abide by. For those of you who don't, here is my challenge to you: Have some gracious professionalism, show respect towards your fellow community members, and just follow a simple rule. Thank you.

Agreed, I've neutral-ed lots of people about their signature size, but I've always gotten a nice reply like "Oh thanks I didn't know" or "I'll get to that! Sorry!", but never any thing rude or along those lines.

If there are users violating signature size rules, report one of their posts and the mod team will take care of it.

In the original post, Adam referenced the rules. In the rule he referenced, there is a link. If I remember correctly, the link leads to a measurement of about 200 pixels.

Just a suggestion that 200 pixels is not a requirement but an absolutely, positively largest size restriction. The old Usenet suggestion was no more than four lines of text -- and I think this is a fine idea. At 200 pixels, even on a big screen, it only takes four or five sigs to fill the screen. This means that the average three or four line post takes up a third of the screen. I would prefer to read what someone says about a thread topic than read (for the 50th time) their signature file. Frankly, most sigs aren't that interesting, and none of them are work seeing the 200th time.

I don't know why I'm complaining, though. I turned off "show sigs" a couple of months ago when I realized I was getting a callous on my "page down" finger due to all the huge (albeit marginally legal) sigs.

Just say "no" to big sig blocks. (TM)

ok i could see how big 200px is before and now but i still cant see how big my sig is. Its hard for me to transfer 200px from the picture in one spot to my sig under my posts

Better yet, send them a PM first. They may not be aware of the rule.

If they ignore you, or send you a nasty reply, then report one of their posts and the matter will be taken care of. To save time, be sure to put in the reported post that you have contacted them and they didn't do anything about it.

Yours is fine.

The easiest way I can think of, to check your signiture length, is to do a print-screen, including your signiture, copy the 200px picture above, and put them next to one another. Is your signiture smaller than 200 px? Good. Is it larger than 200 px? Bad - time to downsize!

I don't know if this is a Mac thing or a FireFox thing (can someone confirm?), but using the image that you posted up above, Katie, I could click and drag it next to my signature and see if it was the right size. I've included a screenshot below.

Steps to test:
1) Start a new thread/reply. It doesn't matter where, you wont be posting it.
2) Include that image.
3) Click 'Preview Post'
4) Drag/drop the image next to your signature.
5) Adjust as necessary.

I'm using Firefox on Windows, and the outline of the image doesn't drag, so its likely a Mac-only feature.

Re: Size Down Those Signatures!

Open a new window with the 200 pixel ruler image, resize the window, and put it on top of the window containing the signature. Compare.
