Signature Size Enforcement

Using an idea from Kevin Irish (kirish) in this post, your signature will now only display a maximum of 200px (12.5em). Any text or images that fall outside that 200px box will not show up on posts. They will still show on your profile, however, so use that however you want (within the rules..).

So, if your signature is missing a line or twelve at the bottom, it's not a bug or a problem with the software -- it's a problem with your signature; edit it as necessary.

Thanks,
Brandon

p.s. This is only going to work in Firefox, Netscape 6+, Opera 5+, and Safari 1.3+ and IE7.

Hurrah!

Could this even be a user editable option in the control panel? *ducks*

Sounds rather spiffy...

What options would you want? On/off? Maximum size?

I think the default (and guest browsing) would be at 200px/12.5em, still.

That sounds good, too.

Would there be a way to just supress all signatures while browsing??

That is a current option somewhere in the user cp.

The Show Signatures checkbox is found under Edit Options/Thread Display Options/Visible Post Elements.

Maybe that's the place to add a selection of maximum displayed signature height?

Another forum I regularly browse adapted this about six months ago and I really liked the idea, but it became natural to me that all sigs would have a forced size limitation that I forgot about it completely until now! Thank you Brandon for your hard work trying to make these forums more viewer-friendly. :D

I'm guilty of using a large signature. Thanks for reminding/forcing me to fix it.

Hey Z, yours wasn't nearly as large as some. Thanks for making this happen, Brandon. Having spent my time acting as the signature police, I am very grateful for the electronic enforcement :) .

I agree. Thanks Brandon! Even though this doesn't work in some versions of IE (due to MS not fully supporting standards), it helps cut down on way oversized signatures that some people tended to create, without totally removing the feature of a signature. Great job on implementing the code!
