Re: Ramp Riot 2006: The Official Thread

This year's Ramp Riot was an example of how a really great event should be run. Al, Dina, Mike, Joe, Jared and their crews organized the chaos of 36 FRC teams in one little gym, and made the event run like clockwork. Thanks for hosting a terrific finale for the Aim High game!

You guys did a really nice job with the "show" part of the event, too. I liked the team introductions and think FIRST should borrow that idea at regionals. Didn't hurt to have such a colorful speaker after lunch, either!

I had such a good time that I could almost overlook the typo, Al:

Um, I think you might want to add one to that team number...

but red did seem to be the better side of the field to be on. Just my 2 cents. :D

I don't think the red advantage was due to the radio test. Neither side would have had an advantage once the test ended. However, the data appears to show that the advantage flipped to the blue side sometime around noon.

CENTER GOAL HITS

Could it be that sunlight interfered with the fire control? I.E. the Shooters couldn't find the light when it was back lit. Was the upper level of the gym windowed at each end? - most are. Was the field positioned E<->W?

Oddly enough, they stopped testing the 2007 prototype radios after lunch.

when we took Mike Wade out for dinner he said that the reason that had to stop using the 2007 radios was because connections came unsodiered in 4 of the radios they had. They were just Pototypes and were hand soldiered, the real radios wont have that problem.

Kyles right, the actual radios are actually supposed to be smaller as well. They enter production sometime this week I believe. The problem is, the 900 mhz chip that IFI uses in the radios has become obselete, and is no longer available. Rather than go through the hassle of finding new hardware for something that may simply stop being used soon, they decided to develop their own stuff, and cut out the middle man.

The new radios are wider, though thinner than our current ones. They include mounting holes.

Personally, I wish they would have kept the old ones- I imagine they're a bit less bulky. But we'll see soon when we get the actual one soon!

Thanks to 341 for an amazing event! Even though my team didn't compete, Ramp Riot is always one of my favorite off-seasons! The atmosphere (even though the gym can get VERY hot) is ALWAYS exciting, and the people are great too! And I finally got my Team in a Box!

Actually, the only outside light entering the venue was behind the blue goal - the main entrance doors. These went into a lobby, and outdoors was a 90 degree turn and 30 feet, plus an overhang before daylight. The light from the entrance (as seen from the gym) really did not change between morning and afternoon - but it could have been a factor - but only for teams using the camera!

Next year, I'll have to take a bunch of photos, see what really happens.

We actually cover all doors and windows with dark paper each year to enhance the big screen projection quality. The only exception is the main entrance.

Team 103 is putting together their monthly newsletter. We would like to include pictures from Ramp Riot, but unfortunately did not have a camera with us at the event. If anyone would be willing to let us use their pictures from the event, it would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me with any pictures that we could use (lea103@gmail.com). Thank you so much.
