Offseason gearbox project... maybe this gearbox has helical gears?

Here are some pictures of a project Kirk and I are working on... The details shall remain a secret for as long as we deem neccesary.

Does this look familiar to anyone? I think it could handle 4 or more CIM motors... zero backlash, and amazingly quiet.

Random guess here--Segway gearbox?

Agreed, it looks quite similar to the one one the Segway. Might make a good swerve gearbox. (the type with one central gearbox, anyone know how much it weighs?)

without a doubt...that is a segway gearbox

You think we voided the warranty? Oops!

If its any good we should rally to get to be part of the KOP

Too heavy, way overkill for any FIRST drivetrain, expensive, strange plastic input coupler... the list goes on.

Concur. You really could run 4 CIMs with safety factor to spare. The ratio looks close to the KOP trannies anyways. Nor would that shaft be the easiest to work with.

What's the diameter of the big gear?

Supposedly, the box was engineered so as to create a gentle harmonic sound when ran, as versus the typical grindy noises. Are they really as smooth as reported? And will it make the Philharmonic?

The sounds made by the two gear meshes in the box are supposed to be two octaves apart. Since two octaves would mean that the higher frequency is four times the lower one, I'm guessing all that means is that the medium-sized gear in the left side of the picture has four times as many teeth as the small gear beneath it, on the same shaft.

It's not really that big a deal engineering-wise, but the attention to detail is nice.

Travis,

Maybe Jawa knows about it and can pull some answers out of him. :D We need some clues here man! Let's start with the question "will a person ride on it?"

PS. I need to get those batteries back from you. :)
