Does your brain work?

1 Attachment(s)
Just something that my uncle sent me that I thought was cool. I'm sure someone can engineer me how it works...

If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color, pink.
If you stare at the the black + in the center, the moving dot turns to green.

Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture. After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating.

It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear.
This should be proof enough, we don't always see what we think we see.

[Edit: You have to open the attachment for this to work]

very cool. I think it has to do with retinal fatigue

Huh. I only see a green dot, rotating around a bunch of pink dots. Well, not around ... taking the place of one pink dot, then the next, then the next ... you get the idea.

No matter how hard on concntrate on the + or try to follow the rotation, that's all I see.

... I think my brain must be broken. :(

My favorite optical illusion, so to speak, is attached here. Square A and Square B are two different shades of gray, right? Think again - they're actually the same shade. Don't believe me? Copy the image into your favorite paint program and see for yourself!

I remember a friend showing this to me back in September, in fact I saved it to my comp. Yes it was September. :) Can't remember where it came from, but I still find it very interesting ever time I pass over that image during a clean up.

My brain works just fine ;) . However, i just took your attachment into M$ paint, and the two squares still look like two different shades or gray when magnified. Does anybody else's results differ?

I tried too and they are a little different but suprisingly close for what it looks like.

It looks that way, even when magnified. But try cutting one and putting it next to the other - see?

I noticed that square B's shade varies in white saturation because of the shadow, while square A is relatively consistent. So I think this one is a bit less than honest, but still not enough to explain why the two look so different.

You're not checking them correctly. Katie meant go into the program and check the RGB levels of the two boxes. Both of the boxes are R,G,B 107,107,107 or in hex, #6B6B6B.

sanddrag 07-06-2006 18:26

Re: Does your brain work?

I didn't believe it, so I took it into photoshop and put the B square on the A square and sure enough, the same shade. That's a good one.

I believe it after the shown evidence but i still don't want to believe it just because they look so different.

Ah, I see it now. M$ doesn't even have a way to check the hex/hue numbers, but I wouldn't have expected it from them anyways. :p That's pretty neat.

Beth, did you get the rest of the powerpoint presentation this was in, or just that one image file..

There are other wicked cool things in the powerpoint one.

Paint has a way to check the RGB values. Use the selection tool (eye dropper thing  ) and click in one of the boxes A or B. Then click the colors menu and go to the custom colors. It shows the RGB and hue of the color you selected, but not hex.

I LOVE that show! And yes, I completely agree with you, I will substitute my own reality. I'd love to say I hate when people prove that, for example, the two squares are the same color, because that ruins the fun, but I can't, because it's really cool to see the tricks brains play on you. Darn brains! Who needs 'em? Jellyfish get along fine!

...OK definitely random. Oh well.

My brain works just fine thank you. Something odd I noticed, when I take my focus off the cross and move it just a little off the side of the cross, I see a ring of green dots against the grey background. That ring of green dots aren't there to begin with, it just happens to be there because of my vision (or maybe my eyes suck more than I think they do). This all has to do with how our eyes recieve light. Of course that's how we're able to see to begin with, but when thing's are flashing/moving/any other activity, then that might affect how we perceive colors.

As for the box thing, shadows are quite interesting. I don't know what to say about that.

To think I learned how our eyes work on a Food Network show. XP But then again, you probably want an opinion from someone who has 20-20 vision. Haha.

Here's an interesting one someone sent me yesterday:

http://www.johnsadowski.com/big_spanish_castle.html (just follow the directions). It's not as neat as the other two, but still cool! Funny enough, I don't trust anything someone sends me that has directions for staring for any amount of time... Someone got me with one of those screaming sites once and I've never gotten over it... so when I was sent this one I turned off my volume. It's not a screamer, but if you don't trust me, just turn off your volume like I did.

Re: Does your brain work?

It has to do with whats called and after image. The cones in your eye that signal to the brain color only have an on or off switch. There are Red/green cones Blue/yellow cones, and some other color cones. The cones have to recharge after firing. So in the absent of a signal the brain thinks the cone is seeing the opposite color. If we follow the dots with our eyes we are using different cones all the time and our brain isn't fooled. But if we concentrate on the + our eyes are fixed and we are using the same cones all the time. So when the cone fires its signal that there is pink there it has to wait to fire again and when the dot disappears we see green.

Its the same thing as a camera flash in the dark. After your blinded you see that annoying green, pink, and white dot in front of your vision.

He got it right. I learnt that in Psych.
