Is there any particular reason you'd like this deleted? It seems as if the discussion blossomed into something a bit bigger than addressing your initial problem and some of the content may be worth keeping around.

This is an old thread, granted, but the topic is pertinent to this post.

I saw this today and have never heard of a spider web like this. The idea of spiders working together to form a communal web is very interesting.

Personally, I don't see what the problem is. The more spiders you have around the house, the less insects you have.

actually there are a few species of social spiders. I know of a South American tarantula that lives in colonies.

The size of this colony is what is pretty amazing. I can picture a single female carrying an egg capsule with hundreds of babies on the tree and all of them surviving to give that huge web, or maybe several generations doing it.

It is known that in ecosystems where birds have been eliminated the spiders seem to flourish (Guam). Maybe this is a wakeup call to take a closer look at the ecosystem in that part of Texas

Still pretty neat. And no sign of Toby Mcguire (sp)?

May possibly be correct. Once had a very large one fall from a tree, onto my leg while camping. I've never jumped higher in my life. :ahh:
