I am very interested in this thread. I would like to help our teacher receive some compensation for the hard work that he does. I wonder if you could elaborate on how you came to the 1700 hour calculation. Perhaps I am missing something, as I certainly do not know how your team operates, but 1700 hours is approximately 3.6 hours each day for 365 days a year.

This is not entirely impossible.
Hawaii, even in its inaugural season, has in the works with our legislature, to secure funds to provide stipends for Robotics programs around the state similar to that of coaches for sports, in addition to other types of funding support.
Dont quote me! But I think that if a Hawaii team(s) wins the Hawaii regional, there may be major funding support to send the team(s) to Atlanta.
Last year, team 2024 (the team that almost beat the Poofs at SVR this year) got a major part of their trip paid by our governor via her sources, since they won the Rookie All-Star award at SVR in 2007.
