is there any particular rhyme or reason you dont want to use a thread gauge?
it seems like it would be eaiser to just go get a cheap one to do it with?

if its any help and its a larger screw...above 1/8 20 i think...home depot has a litle center with bolts and nuts affixed to it so you can test the size of a given nut/bolt
