I laughed when the high-res video opened with dimensions of 320x240, but then I remembered it was from 93. As for the video, amazing find. Seeing FIRST in its infancy as compared to what it is now is a awesome feeling. From a high school gym to the Georgia dome in a matter of years is just outstanding.

We also can see Dean has always had his denim.

This is a great video we should all keep a copy of. I was especially impressed by that guy near the end in the Texas A&M hat. I wonder if he's still involved in FIRST ... and that enthusiastic guy pumping his arms with the glasses and the goofy look on his face. I hope he's still around somewhere ;)

It's really interesting to see that Dean's vision is really getting there... And he did achieve his third year goal of a great increase in the number of kids involved.

It's also really cool to see how my school looked back in '93!

Can anyone name the teams in the video?

Barbara Walters looks as if she got struck by lightning.

...it sure would've been fun to get a chance at detachable mechanisms, but I guess that shipped has sailed.

Yeah, that looked really cool! :D

I couldn't believe it when they mentioned the 50 lb. weight limit. Nowadays, most of us have trouble keeping it under current 120 lb. limit! :ahh:

That's the first time I've seen him with a beard.

When I started watching the clip I thought it was Norm Abram.........using a Bridgeport.

I was in HS when this came out. At that time there was talk of cutting the technology classes (as there had been from time to time) and the BOE cut the hours of the graphic arts teacher and made him part time. Who knew that 5 years later another technology teacher would jump on the FIRST bandwagon and create team 237 and breathe new life into Watertown's technology program. I just wish 237 had existed before I graduated.

How come they don't play The Ride of the Valkyries anymore? :]

My .02 worth....

This is a truly amazing piece of FIRST history. It shows how far the program has come, grown in size with Dean never changing his goals for the program. His speech is still right on the money, although sad, it is still true. The average high school student in the US today is still getting bombarded with the wrong message and its up to us to continue to keep the pressure on your local School Committees and School Admins to grow and expand FIRST to ALL schools in your local system.

Now.......that said, who saw Woody? I did. And forgive me, I cannot remember their names right now, but the 2 guys who started IFI as mentors??

So i've seen a '92 video. A '93 and even a very short '94 video.
Anyone got a '95 video?

Yep Dana, those are the same two I was referring to...

Tony is the one in the A&M hat and Bob is the very excited mentor with glasses :)

If you look close you can see Tony and Bob from Innovation First as team members.....

Still a GREAT message.

I have to echo Dana's words in that it is truly amazing that Dean's message has not changed in the slightest. Think to how many companies change their mottos or their strategies, and how often they do it. I know just in the time I have been here, Harris RF has been "next level communications" and now "assured communications", and our plans are rather different than they were 13 years ago. Dean's message is still exactly the same.

Great video, thanks so much for sharing it!!

And also, does anyone know of any other current FIRST team members that were involved way back then? 14 years of FIRST involvement is simply amazing :) I want the secret to that kind of longevity! haha.

Yeah I mean all you did was put in 10 years and start up two prominent FIRST teams.
What a slacker! :p
