2007 FIRST Competition

I just decided to log back on to Chief Delphi today, haven't been on since last year. How are you all? Any news on the 2007 game?

Btw Ramtech 59 might go to the Vegas Regional this year =D We'll see soon. :D

Nothing yet.
I'm sure Dave will start unleashing Red Herrings soon.

Vegas is an awesome regional to attend, it has an amazing energy and atmosphere about it. Also, there are tons of things to do after the regional is over for the day. Team 25 had a blast there this past year. I'd definitely recommend it. :D

YEah the light trick is something big because Dave was "annoyed" when it was leaked at the championship. So it must be real. I mean Dave wouldn't feed me a red herring in person....would he...?

Josh Murphy 15-08-2006 19:05

Re: 2007 FIRST Competition

Yeah Dave Vebrugge talked about it at the Championships, but we knew it was a fluke because he said the same thing at the West Michigan Regional but said "April Fool's" but I would put my money on saying that what was said is a strong possibility for next year but who knows???? :)

Marcel 17-08-2006 11:53

Re: 2007 FIRST Competition

It could be something close to what it really is you know. Like not the light trick exactly but something where three things will be done or something? I don't know school just started 4 straight hours of engineering this year. Electronic Technology, and then Technology studies. It's easy but 4 straight hours?

Anyway we'll see. And as to the Vegas Regionals are going to be awesome. When we went to the long island regionals weren't that spirited you know, Orlando was great as usual. And now for something different.

Agreed. I think the fact that there was air time before you knew if you were going to score added to the excitement. And then there were the bots that were almost dumping in the high goal.

Watch the IRI semi-finals (?) and they might as well have been. Who would have thought that a score of 130+ would have been the losing score.

But yeah, if Dave has been dropping hints, then I would be the last person to catch them. I live by an airport.

You might want to qualify that offer with a timeline. Dave will certainly be glad to tell you what next year's game piece is right after it is announced at kick-off, and I'm sure he'd be happy to receive any quantity of KK at the same time. You may have intended to do the deal earlier?

In the mean time people, enjoy your break from FIRST if you don't have any mini-comps coming up, or are not involved in FLL, and don't hold your breath waiting until Kickoff.

We wouldn't want to see anyone pass out from holding their breath before they can see the awesomeness of the 2007 game.

And trust me, it IS awesome.
Both me & my time machine racked up a few miles checking out every game from 2007-2010 and they all rock. :D

Hmmm ...

Torroidal gamepieces. Dave has outscored Amanda, 1-0. Is this because he has ingested one complete torroid, no longer visible at the time of the photo? Or because of something that can be seen in the photo?

Hmmm ...

Maybe the game is to deliver donuts to the human player, who must eat them for extra points...resetting the field would be quite the sticky situation though..

No, Dave rose to Arefin's challenge.
Something like:
HAHAHA HA HAHAHAHAHA

Then he showed the challenge he rose to before - eating KK's with Amanda.
He won the challenge easily.
Amanda lost sadly - as one can see with the last photo.

I'm sure there are game clues within those few pictures or maybe no, therefore -continuing to mess with Arefin's head on a couple of levels.
The rest of us are bonus points.

Naptime.

If Dave wants I'll challenge him..I worked for dunkins for three years eons ago. I learned to eat a lot of donuts (and drink a lot of coffee)...lol
Anyway my metabolism has'nt slowed down much and I think I could beat him.
Our team is'nt too far from his...so maybe something could be set up.
(unless we face off in Richmond at the fair) Anyway for myself i can wait until
next year to find out (I have a lot a patience as I am married and have four
kids...(yes three are teens)...so I'm a patient man...But I'd do it for the greater good the rest of us and for the donuts....can you say "honey dip?"

Only perhaps less flipping and more confetti.

I never knew there was a placebo robot before I read the wiki. I know the '07 game is already made, but couldn't there still be room for a placebo comeback?

I'm not sure you can even compare KKs to DDs, its like comparing apples to oranges, yeah they are both fruit, BUT!
Maybe a sorting element, put the KKs in this goal and the DDs in this goal...

Re: 2007 FIRST Competition

Or maybe who ever brings Dave the most donuts win?

Anyways it could maybe be something to do with boxes like 3 or 4 years ago? Or maybe a combination of boxes and last year...using boxes as projectiles. Or maybe the arena is a donut shape, so many possible options it's crazy.

mrmummert 22-08-2006 11:28

Re: 2007 FIRST Competition

Hi..

Hmmm could be both...Donuts do come in boxes.

But yes if we follow the use of elements over the years
it would seem logical that boxes would be used this coming year.

Aerobies are torroidal and would make excellent game pieces, IMO. But what would they be aimed at? Baskets? Nets? Some feature of your opponents' (or alliance partners') robots? Hmmm......

That's an excellent idea actually, each robot can have like a long shaft coming from the top (yeah let's be mature guys). And a shooter, the shafts would have to be a certain height or something, and then the robots would have to somehow launch the disks and have them land on these shafts, or sticks, and then which ever team with the least disks would win. I think that's a great idea. Yeah, the human players would throw the disks into these "goal poles" and it would be harder with the robots moving, or the human players could throw the disks into their own robots so the robots have more "ammo" for shooting.

Hm here's a couple of ideas, I actually think it could work. I'm thinking the foam disks toy gun for an ammo thing.

hmmm...if everything we say is wrong all we need to do is say everything except what we want the game to be and then we will know what it is....wait, but if we do that then what we want it to be will be wrong....oh what troubles speculation puts us in. :ahh:

Hm I had a problem like this today in class, dimensional analysis. Wow that hurt like crazy. It was something like:

Pretend you work at a burger joint because in school you never learned about dimensional analysis you couldn't get a better job than what you have. You've been wrapping burgers for 35 years you earn $840 every two weeks, and you work 8 hours a day 5 days a week. How many burgers do you need to wrap in order to get your first million dollars. If you solve this problem you will have learn about dimensional analysis and therefor you'll quit your job and then get a better job but you then by quitting your answer will be wrong, so in order to be right you can't be right because then you'll be wrong so the only way to solve the problem is to be wrong and then you don't know the answer because you weren't right.

So it went something like that and it was a closed cycle. It was so confusing but then my teacher said that we'll pretend that if we get it right we won't quit the job therefor we can get the right answer. It was so weird.

But I got the answer right. Anyways what were you saying about robots?

I wish... Brandon Marcus ... I mean Martus ruined all the fun by posting this thread.

Buh, how long till we can start building? >.< I want to weld something, or build a chasis, I think I'm going to buy some aluminum and get a loan and turn my garage to a little engineering room for me. And then I can build absolutely nothings but atleast have fun engineering. o.o

I can't wair for January. Gosh.

All will be revealed in due time. ((Probably within a month or so. Please be soon so I can start to think my brain so hard it melts! mmmmm melty brain))

On another note. Possibly the game will use doughnuts or tubes as the playing object. Or possibly a gametype where the robots have to get more of something in a time limit. Just a guess folks. Knowing Dave however it could be something unrelated such as picking up golf balls and chucking them at people. ((My humour is horrible I apollogize))

Hm, for some odd reason I keep thinking either hoverbots or underwater basket weaving for some odd reason. Or under water hover basket weaving. o.o

Humour aside I wouldn't doubt FIRST finally giving us a game that deals with going underwater or robots hovering a little or something. Then again it could also have absolutely nothing to do with that.

You know, with this being the 16th year, what if they use lights to signal what you have to do with pieces from all of the past years? Or better yet, make your robot accomplish the recent tasks and turn the lights on, the more lights the more points.

Re: 2007 FIRST Competition

This Year has been an interesting year, New Store, New Job, New FIRST Team, but as is usually this time of year, it was another Chilly Rainy October Day at the Depot, so taking advantage of my New position, i decided to make some calls, read some training manuals and take a look at what kind of orders Home Depot Store 3482 had for a certain Manchester based Robotic Organization... and what i found was incredibly interesting, a couple of weird quotes (i don't have the kind of power to see if they were paid orders or maybe Mr. Lavery is going to even greater lengths to scare us*) one quote was for 11,000 (eleven thousand individual) 10' pieces of schedule 40 4" PVC Pipe and 4 Tee Connectors.... which either means that the GDC has been eating a little too much Mexican food, or the weirdest clue i have ever seen, I also saw a separate quote for 3500 Red, Green, and Blue Flood Light bulbs... I immediately thought back to right before the finals in the championships this year...
a 3rd quote was made for what we call "pro packs" of #8 1/2" self tapping screws totaling over 54,000 individual screws...

after a conversation with Dave, at IRI this year, he is well aware that i am employed at the Home Depot, so this could just be him playing mind games with the FIRST Community through me, or he could have forgotten this tidbit of information as some older people tend to do....

All i know is that i am scared....

*=Lengths already achieved to frighten me : 1) I now look up every time i go outside waving to Dave, hoping that he doesn't drop a satellite on my head
2) being Declared Legally dead for the day... which was an interesting conversation at blockbuster... let me tell you

I wonder if Dave has also ordered large quantities of Dr. Pepper and Mentos? Maybe he's planning a really big soda geyser, using a 4" pipe twenty miles high?

Durring the finals in Atlanta there was a "hint" given on the Einstein field that alluded to the fact that there may be some sort of color changing lights on the field in 07. Did anyone else pick this up and / or maybe hear something else?

Duurrr. Thats what I get for not reading the whole thread. So yea it looks like there will be some color changing lights this year. The pvc seems rather ominous though, I doupt that they will have game pieces made out of pvc so soon after Triple Play. I guess it is a possibility. What if entire field is rigged so that robots will have to travel ON a grid of pvc that makes up the floor. I'm scared sarge.

I completely agree. 2006 was a lot of fun because of the poofballs flying everywhere. This year, as a prediction, some of the team members are predicting terrain, and some are also predicting moving targets or moving obstacles. :D

I'm for terrain. It creates a fun challenge for drivetrain designers. :)

Ramps reward robust robots. :D

We need something new for terrain, some teams have thier drive down pat that its not challenging. The only downisde is it makes it hard for rookies, but I think we need to lose the carpet.

We could always drive on an uneven surface like in Maize Craze when the field was covered in popcorn (unpopped).

what about that pointy foam . . I think its called egg crate or something.

hmm but I think getting around the destruction of field rule would be hard.

ewankoff 05-11-2006 14:42

Re: 2007 FIRST Competition

your right it is egg crate but teams would get even more traction on that. i think it needs to be something loose or super slippery. maybe greesed delrin.

Stuart 05-11-2006 15:07

Re: 2007 FIRST Competition

what about both . . slippery/hard parts of the field and soft/grippy parts of the field . .

or how about 2' x 2'sheets of greesed delerin on top of egg crate so its squishy and slick

Cuog 05-11-2006 15:16

Re: 2007 FIRST Competition

We can't have too slick of floors cause we don't want to kill (literally) the feild reseters.

have them wear helmets :p
i like the idea of a field constantly shifting positon. would make autonomous less reliable and more a cointoss rather than a sure thing.

Hmmm, it is the 16th year... Sweet 16 and Donuts << thats just seems to go together somehow... lol

No matter what i think we can pretty much safely say that the camera is going to be involved in some way, most likely for autonomous.

Tetras in 2005 (shaped like a triangle), Balls in 2006 (similar to a circle), I guess a square shape in 2007. I mean look at there logo....

As far as the electronics go i predict some change, not sure exactly what, maybe the camera or the OI and RC... I think its safe to say the breaker panel, Victors, and Spikes will stay the same. Changing something with the Radio Modems might be a thought. (Programming wirelessly would be nice)
