Forum Upgrade

Sometime soon (note: soon is relative, and very open to interpretation) I hope to have these forums upgraded to vBulletin 3.6.0 (we're currently way behind, at 3.0.7). The big jump in version numbers means I have lots of work to do, getting the old custom code (CD-Media, CD-Events, CD-Swap, Spotlights, Countdown, Text-Message Reminder, UFH/WFA, Portal mainly) migrated over to the slightly different code base. It's not a hard job, just tedious.

The bad news: it's going to take a while to go live, especially with all the other stuff I have going on. Once I have something close to being finished, I'll send out a URL and have you all test it out and tell me whats broken or what I forgot to put back in. Until this upgrade is finished, all other modifications/additions/changes are on hold.

The good news: vBulletin 3.6.0 is pretty cool.
Some improvements & new features:
  • Multi-Quote: You can quote multiple posts in a thread without having to manually add the QUOTE tags and put their username in, etc, etc.
  • Better 'Read Post' tracking: If you haven't read the posts on a thread, browse for a few minutes, come back 3 days later, your posts will still be marked 'unread'. (Right now, you have 15 minutes of inactivity before they're all automatically marked unread)
  • Upload a signature image (so you don't have to put it in CD-media). This used to be available here, but got lost in one of the upgrades.
  • BCC added to Private Message System
  • Lots more here

The site will only be down for a few moments (a few hours) while I switch over to the new version. The bulk of the work will be done on a copy of the site, and then merged back into the live site. This probably won't happen for a month or two, though.

Just wanted to clear up any misconceptions of anybody not having their daily fix of ChiefDelphi.com or anything. :)

I feel old, I remember when we went from vB2 to vB3 and what a big deal that was....

How does this compare in terms of magnitude? I remember there being some interesting...well...side effects of such a large upgrade last time around.

Most of the site will look & function the same. There are a few things here & there that will look or work slightly different. I think the majority of the high-traffic areas will remain unchanged, though. It won't be as big of a shock as vB2 -> vB3 was.

They're running a 3.6.0 version on http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/ if you were curious and wanted to look.

Looks like there's some cool Web 2.0 stuff hidden in there. This should work out nicely with the CD Media section.

Yeah. I may or may not integrate my Ajax stuff with theirs. We'll have to see.

Why just settle for green? I think instead of Green we should start to migrate to Gold dots or even purple. Oh the possibilities are end less. Tytus, you can have my green dots anytime you want.

I'd rather that the phrases change. Like with over 10,000 points it says something like "Andy Baker had this much rep... 3 years ago" and when it's under 1,000 it says "They're just dots -Brandon Martus".

Nope. The upgrade is looking more time consuming than I had originally thought, due to the amount of security they added to prevent cross-site-scripting and other 'bad things'. I guess it's good -- it just makes my job harder converting my older stuff to the new vBulletin code base.

Weddings (brother), vacations, work, and other obligations are also taking up a lot of time. I'll hopefully have some time to get things going in the next few weeks.

Life's been crazy since I last said that (relocated for a new job). Now that things are settling down, I've been able to work on it a few nights this past week. It's getting close. I'm thinking the weekend of Dec 8-10th looks good to move it over and spend the weekend making it all play nice.

(uh-oh, I put a firm date on it .. I better get it done)
