Being in the same-ish boat as Jon, I'll always think of you guys as the penguins.

Or for a physical mascot you could even just have someone possibly dress up as a WWII era bomber pilot.

I have you linked to the Flyers, but I make the connection to the Philadelphi Flyers when I hear your name as well (being a hockey fan). So, incorporation of the Philly Flyers logo, or something that resembles it, could work as well.

In a slight bit of irony, the Penguins is also an NHL team's name, the Pittsburgh Penguins...
I'd think you were from Pennsylvania with those teams names. :p

I think its also important to note that the Linux mascot is the Penguin:

now ain't that cute, just put it in a WWI or WWII pilot suit and its done. ;) :D

edit: well... on second thought and a piece of advice from a former member, we'll put our old penguin in a pilot suit, not this one. The former member informed me that when the idea for the penguins was originally debated, the logo was made specifically against the linux one. In fact, it was made to emulate the big and buff teacher that ran the team at the time. ;)

Honestly? Just as Team 66. Although I have vague recollections of the Mystery Machine, team names change so often that it just makes sense to brand with the number in mind. But it's always good to gauge your audience.

Agreed, route 66 is always on my mind and a similar sign has always been on the front of our t-shirts (not our polos).

BTW: I need some more voters... I want to get a very good idea of who knows us as what to see what needs to happen as far as a mascot is concerned.

Joe,
I agree with Not2B. Penquins are cute and all, but you all have a really cool logo with the bomber in it. Your school and town history are all wrapped around the bomber plant. If you want something for those "cutesie" moods, you could wear red scarves ala Snoopy and the Red Baron, but you can't beat the professional look of that Flyers logo.

I agree with Andy - They'll always be "Those Meddling Kids" with their "Mystery Machine" to me. Mystery Machine, Baxter Bomb Squad, and Truck Town Terror :p

How about the Flying Penguins? Your logo could look something like a Penguin in an Open Cockpit WWI style fighter, sorta like this.

But than again, this is FIRST we are talking about,

Goooooood question. You see, the school didn't care much about us until AFTER we won nationals in 2002. Then they saw us as a marketing opportunity if you will for the high school and district. So the pressure came on the team from the principal and superintendent (as mentioned in the link of the first post of this thread) to change our name to the flyers, which is the standard name for any team within the high school. Consistency was the main reason.

In my humble opinion, if the board of ed and the principal at that time had any foresight, they would have seen a loss of recognition if our name was changed, and not to mention a loss of recognition of Willow Run which was more important. ;) They also forgot the type and size of league we are in.

And what happened? Everyone basically got confused and wondered where had all the penguins gone, from WILLOW RUN.

The name the flyers bears little to no importance unless it links to Willow Run, but the name Willow Run does, and if the penguin name connects other people's minds from across the nation and even the world to Willow Run, that is all that matters. As I stated previously, my initial idea is not to change our name from the flyers to the penguins because I can see there's a growing number of people who recognize us as the flyers, which is awesome. We just need a mascot, and reviving the penguin would probably be the best option, because its name bears some great history. Plus it would boost the team spirit a bit.

And why mention it here? I need some support if I am to try and convince my coach, my principal, and possibly the school board, that the penguin needs to return, just as a mascot. Even though statistically speaking the flyers name dominates, there is still a good chunk of those polled who know us as the penguins. In politics, the penguin would be dead, but since FIRST stuff is more closely tied to economics and marketing than anything, that chunk is seen as opportunity. That is something I would need to stress to those I need to convince.

BTW: The first change in names, from the meddling kids to the penguins, was pretty much a result of Ypsilanti and Willow Run becoming independent teams.

Yes... I am reviving this old thread... to do one big thing.

Thank you to the Buckeye Regional Judging crew for selecting us to recieve the 2007 Buckeye Regional Imagery Award. Our team has really come together to bring to every FIRST team and to the FIRST community in general a bigger, better, and more brilliant team 66, and to salute us for bearing the name of the Flyers and reflecting upon our rich history, from pit and robot appearance, REALLY irons that in for good.

Thanks. ;)

I was the one that made the comment to you. I REALLY truly believe that you have the best team theme of any of the FIRST teams. Not only is it cool on its own, but it really best encapsulates the history of your school and community.

If nothing else, it is a great talking point if anyone asks how you came up with the team name, you can go into the history of Willow Run - both the airport and community that it created. I'm very happy to see you guys get the award.
