Pluto not a planet anymore
 

According to the news this morning, Pluto is no longer has the title of planet of which it was declared in 1930. From now we only have 8 planets. From now on it is considered to be a "dwarf" planet.

So Ceres, Charon, and others will all be classified as "dwarf planets".... Well that's interesting.

These astronomers sure have planet sized egos!

Pluto has been called a planet since what? 1930?

Who appointed these people the galactic executives over semantics and nomenclature?

What happens to the beings who live on Pluto now? Are they being demoted to lesser life forms as well? (Well you dont live on a real planet, so you are not important anymore!)

What's all the fuss about? It's not like some secret board of inquisitors met and voted to kick Pluto out of the solar system! It's still there!

Besides, NASA already launched the mission to go look at Pluto, hopefully arriving on the scene circa ten years hence. It's probably too late to turn back now.

This whole thing stemmed from the lack of a true definition of planet until they voted on one this morning. Now there is a unified definition agreed upon by astronomers. http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science...24-pluto_x.htm (see the sidebar for the actual resolution)

Remember Ceres was once a planet as well, not just an asteroid. Also Pluto's statis has been debated since it's discovery in 1930 which isn't that long considering how long we've known about many of the other planets.

Exactly, it was programmed to goto the planet Pluto. Now there is no Planet Pluto.

Im really upset about this whole thing. I has been my life long dream to be the first person to set foot on the 9th planet, and now my dreams have been shattered.

Pluto is so unique - the surface temp is about 7º K, but with the windchill it feels like its -4° K !

If anyone noticed I had that as my user title for several weeks. Now what I found really funny was the protesters who wanted to protect Pluto's rights to be a planet.

Awww but I liked Pluto being a planet...

I guess I just don't get what saying it is or it isn't a planet is going to change. Is it like making it a state or not so the residents have to pay taxes or not? Why is this distinction so neccessary?

Jon Stewart mentioned the news, Colbert was silent about his celebrating too early on the subject. He did however have a science fiction author on the show and discussed the theory of everything.

Pluto has become the underdog of our solar system

When it was discovered they named it after the god of the underworld,

and now to add further insult its been demoted to drawf status.

I would not be one bit surprized if Pluto decided to go rouge, and wander off through the Galaxy alone, taking one of its moons with it, and flinging the other in our direction in a parting shot.

Well, guess anyone who chooses to live on a rock where the average temperature is real close to absolute zero, and it takes about four hours for radio signals from Earth to reach them, probably has standing to sue if they want.

The world has not heard the end of this incident, not by a long shot.

There is a huge grass roots ground swell of rebellion, esp in the US.

After all, Pluto is the only planet that was honored with a Beatles song being dedicated to it, complete with 9 minutes of actual radio transmission from the distant world: Number Nine, Number Nine, Number Nine.

i think we'll always thinks of Pluto of the 9th planet. And now confuses among the kids in school right now but how many actually put Ceres and Charon on their solar system projects? I guess those companies making solar system projects have to update now their kits.

there is more behind this than they are saying in the news

apparently NASA and the US military industrial complex has been secretly mining a raw material from Pluto for the last 30 years - an element they use for weapon systems

and now that they have all of the Plutonium they need, the planet gets downgraded (just is case word gets out it has been pillaged)! Strip mining a sovereign planet is one thing, but taking all the natural resources from a "big asteroid", who cares, right?

Now you know the real truth!

I forgot to mention this a week ago, but Pluto was given a number. Pluto is now known as 134340.


As Number 6 would say: Pluto will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered! Pluto's life is its own!
