I was completely surprised that my team, 1521, and 1270 took the regional at that last match. I never knew that we were going into the finals. It was intense and fun. Big thanks to everyone who makes the event possible and all of the teams that showed up and share Gracious Professionalism there. I am glad that Florida Regional's home feeling and welcoming hearts made the event a blast that will never be forgotten. Congrats to all the award winners and finalists! We will see you guys at the Championship! :D Take it easy and we all have a lot of things ahead of us beside the events including community services, and spreading FIRST.

Thank you,

Congratulation to 1270 - 86 - 1251!

You played a great game taking us down to the wire. We were lucky to be in the finals having to play with only two bots especially against the likes of 180 233 and 1889.

I feel honored that we made #2 seed and #2 in finals in one of the toughest regionals.

You guys had an amazing alliance, 1902 was such an amazing scorer, 179 played some amazing defense in the first 2 matches, and in the last match your offense was impressive. And finally 386, you guys gave us a run for it as well, your autonomous mode scared us a little bit. overall congrats to the #2 allaince, great job on everyones part.

Re: Florida Regional 2007

First of all, many kudos to 1270, 86, and 1251!

The Florida Regional for 2007 will definitely be one of my most memorable regionals. We went from being seeded DEAD LAST to getting in the #6 seeded alliance (THANK YOU S.P.A.M.!) with another amazing robot (HAZE! (thats 1889, right? Tytus dont kill me if i got it wrong...)), and then making it to the semifinals.

Yeah, the radio issue was irritating... everyone on my team was genuinely thrilled about being able to replay quarterfinal #4.

SigmaC@TS, Children of the Swamp, Exploding Bacon, and Voltage, you all were an incredible alliance to go against... after you took us out we were rooting for you the whole time! Congratulations on getting so far, in the end it was really close and either of you could have won it.

And KRUNCH, congrats on getting Chairmans again. :)

I'd like to say, on behalf of Team Voltage, that our team had an EXCELLENT time at regionals this year! It was a privilege playing with 1902 and 179!

Even with 233's mechanical troubles, we hope you had a great time! You guys have a really good chance in Atlanta and we hope we can be allied with you!

Hope to see some of you in South Carolina and at Championships!

Re: Florida Regional 2007

Congrats to 1251, 1270, and 86! This year's Florida Regional was definitely memorable.

I am proud of all the teams there, and of SPAM's aliance into the semifinals. It felt different to be choosing Pink, but with Haze, and the luck of replaying the first match, we were great.

Hopefully we can all reunite at the championships to form as strong of an alliance, minus the radio interference. :D

Once again, congratulations to all the teams, and I can't wait to see everyone in Atlanta!

To say that we were thrilled to be picked by S.P.A.M. is an understatement. Considering what we had demonstrated in the qualifying matches, we felt lucky to be picked at all, and then to get picked in the first round by one of the best teams in the competition---it was great. Thanks, guys, and we'll see you in Atlanta, and some of you in Vegas.

Actually, the choice was quite easy.

SPAM was looking for the best arm-only robot that was left to choose from. Watching your two qualifying matches on Friday showed us that you could do it.

After that, we were looking for a good defensive robot and we were very familiar with 1889's capabilities.

It was a blast having the chance to play with Pink, rather than against them. In all of my years with the team, I cannot recall ever having the opportuninty, either in qualifying or eliminations.

And it is always a blast to play with Gary and Tytus. What other mentors do you know who break dance during the elimination rounds?

A scene not likely to make it to the SOAP regional archives, I'm sure, unless it comes with a parental warning.

This was a very emotional event for me, after 9 years with SPAM and working with Ty on a new and growing team. I couldn't be prouder of my friends young and old. The winners, the losers (you're all winners ;) ), and everyone in between was gracious above and beyond expectations.

Thanks to SPAM for picking us - thankfully we got our radio problems fixed (after changing out the modem, cable AND RC control) or I would have been sick for letting you down. I'll echo Warren's sentiments about Pink - never got to team with you and always wanted to. I told my teammates before alliance selection that you would be picked even though you were ranked last, because you deserve it.

Congrats to George and EB - I already told you how I feel in my extended hug after the match; we probably should have ripped off some chest hair after that. To the champions - you have alot to be proud of for your performance and behavior.

And to Krunch - keep setting the standard. We'll keep trying to reach it.

I have to extend huge thanks from myself and all of 1251 for team 1270 and team 86 helping us on the road to victory. 1270, you were amazing, great scorers who held your own under the hard hits of some of the teams there. 86, you guys played some amazing D and your ramp was amazing, also, your cart's toolbox was a lifesaver in those short fix times. Altogether, we couldn't have done it without either of you and see you at nationals!!

I've been to regionals in the northeast. New York and Boston... I know a couple of years ago (way before my time) our team went to Jersey and Toronto too. We've also been out west... Denver, Washington State... We've been to a lot of different regionals. But from my experience, the northeast regionals I went to (New York 04, Boston 06) never seemed as hard as the Florida Regional (04-07), and I always wondered why it never got reputation for being a hard regional. Granted, no regional is every really easy... but Florida always seems to be very competative... we have amazing veteran and rookie teams. So, I would say from my experience, the Florida Regional is one of the hardest/most competative, and thats part of what makes it so great!

oh and ahanktcd, trust me, we all had a great time. We werent dancing the whole time for nothing... we were enjoying the competition, in spite of our little mechanical issues. :) Thanks for your concern, and we look forward to seeing you in Atlanta, along with everyone else! :)

One more thing...NO MORE OUTDOOR PITS!!!

No more power outages, long bumpy walks, or freezing right in front of the AC. Believe it or not, it was often colder in the tent than it was in the arena. FIRST handled it really well and it was fun experience nonetheless...

New York is not a hard regional and neither is boston. At least this year, New Jersey was way more competitive than Florida. Other years, results vary. You will find that while many "big name" teams do not come to New Jersey, the level of competition is stiff. My only complain against New Jersey is that teams only got 7 official rounds.

I agree that Boston and New york(especially the one we went to) were extremly easy competitions with many rookie teams in comparison to other NE competitions and the FL regional, I would not go as far as to say that the NJ regional is more competitive than FL, if so, not by much, from what I hear there are alot of industry sponsored teams up there that have very efficient robots, as som1 else has already mentioned, next year is hawaii : D, 09 soudns like a good year for Jersey, our team has been wanting to go to a more competitive competition like NJ for our second regional because we ususually go to new competitions in new locations

Can't forget that 86 has had an extremely good robot for both last year and this year. 79 also always shows up with an excellent robot and Always a great Chairman's entry.

Also Team 56 from NJ was in attendance at the Florida Regional this year. That NJ team had one one of the best arms in the competition, I can see a good argument both ways.

By the way. Does anyone know any home remedies for getting your voice back?

I'm not sure about that particular match, but I do know that in many of the early matches there were quite a few teams that did not show up for their matches --either because they didn't pass inspection or they still were working on their bot. Before lunch Friday, there were a lot of 2 on 3 matches.

still it wasnt right for them to continue since red had only 1bot and blue had 3. watch the match. i was not there for those before match 4 cause im from far away and had school.our team is entered in the Drexel university competition and no others. same in the next match except red had 2bots and blue had 3.

technoL 11-03-2007 20:57

Re: Florida Regional 2007

They are not going to hold up the matches and confuse the match schedule because teams are not ready to compete. Although there might have been a bit of a problem with the teams that could not put a robot on the field (I know about 233's story) it is vital to keep the matches moving in a timely manner, even at the sake of a whole alliance.

Nuttyman54 11-03-2007 21:01

Re: Florida Regional 2007

Matches must go on, with or without robots. Team 971 missed a number of matches last year to get our robot running (which, it never managed to do properly)

This is one of the many reasons good scouting is so important.

I know why one of the robots, 233, wasn't there. We had major structural issues with our tower which were awaiting repairs. We, like all teams in this situation, feel badly about letting our alliance partners down. The possibility of "no shows" affecting other teams is a down side of the alliance system which has been part of FIRST since 1999, though there are also many good points to the alliance system.

We'll try to do better next year, and make it to all of our matches.

Just out of question, but did the lack of quick access to band saws, drill presses and the like have much of an impact on the time it took to repair the robot?

We were paying attention to your ability to score quickly, on all levels, in autonomous, and while being bothered by opponents - oh and also your ability to climb ramps.

also ALL of our aliance partners were amazing and we appreciate all of your help.
And ofcourse there were so many teams and people along the way that made Florida an exciting regional!!

team 25 and 233, you can get your wish......as you both plan on attending the hawaii regional next year with us veteran hawaii teams, teams 359 and 368. I believe 233 won a regional with our fellow hawaii robotics team 368 in seattle/portland in 2003, I forget? team 25 is the only team to have prevented us from getting to a regional finals as we have made it 6 times in our 7 times attending a regional since 2000, with two regional championships......
Teams 254 and 330 will be there I assume.......
NJ plans on sending teams 11, 75?, and a few others who I will be working with to get them and anyone else a Hawaii packet.
All of you FL teams should come as our weather is very similar to yours during this time!
The Hawaii regional is GUARANTEED to be during the 5th week of regionals.

We are next going to Vegas which surely will be tough with 4 FL teams and 254, 4, 39, 108, etc!!!

I'm pretty sure teams pick their alliance partners based on more than wins/losses and rankings. If that were the case, the top 8 would pick each other and only the top 24 teams would ever have a chance of going to the finals rounds. As that's not the case, I'm sure everyone has their reasons for picking - or not pinking in this case - who they did.

:]

Every year since I have been involved with FIRST I have known pink to be FLAWLESS. That robot is always ready to go. Then when i heard this year that they were having problems, I was like WHO pink? No way!

So we can finally prove that 233 is Human and not machines!

After hearing your story, you guys came through big. congradulations

On of the rookie members of my old team asked me, why did pink get picked for Elminations they werent doing very well.
My answer: It doesnt matter pink is always a good bet in pickings, they can have the worst qualification matches but will always pull through in elmination.

As our mentor of strategy and WFA winner (W00T!) Warren said on page 14:
Actually, the choice was quite easy.

SPAM was looking for the best arm-only robot that was left to choose from. Watching your two qualifying matches on Friday showed us that you could do it.

After that, we were looking for a good defensive robot and we were very familiar with 1889's capabilities.

It was a blast having the chance to play with Pink, rather than against them. In all of my years with the team, I cannot recall ever having the opportuninty, either in qualifying or eliminations.

And it is always a blast to play with Gary and Tytus. What other mentors do you know who break dance during the elimination rounds

Scouting is an important part of the game ;)

PS kudos to the finalists and to Krunch and M.A.R.S for chairmans and E.I.
great competitors and great teams

Actually, 342 is completly red. But anyway, we were very happy with our allience. Despite the radio problems, we played on and had a great time

Thanks again to 1027

So we finally got our voices back and we are caught up on sleep. I would just like to say that on behalf of team 1270 that we had a blast during our stay in Florida, and it was a pleasure to compete with all of you Florida teams as well as all the other teams who traveled there. I'm glad we came down there because it was a heck of a regional. Good luck to all teams and we hope to see you in Nationals!

P.S. We also wanted to add in a word of appreciation towards 1251 and 86 for partnering with us. Hope to see you guys in nationals!

Hey everybody, now that we've had a few weeks to relax (and by relax I mean attend other regionals/take exams/try to keep from failing/etc.) I would like to try to get together a formal "Lessons Learned" for the planning committee. I have joined the regional committee as a Volunteer Co-Coordinator in anticipation for the hopeful super regional next year. I have seen many great tidbits of issues and improvement ideas in this thread and from various mentors that I've been in contact with since the regional, but I would like to extend that even further since you guys were the ones participating in the regional itself.

If you find the time and would like to get in touch with me with ideas and suggested improvements (which will be kept anonymous, so feel free to tell us exactly what is on your mind), please e-mail me personally. Please keep in mind that most of the issues in the pits this year have been addressed and will be improved next year, most of it the problems this year were because of the intense construction around the arena this year. With that in mind, talk with your students/mentors and try to send me an e-mail with your thoughts. Thanks guys! I look forward to a fun filled year next year, and good luck those continuing to other regionals and the championship.
