Is there a copy of the match schedule up somewhere yet (including practice matches)? I'm watching the webcast and it can be hard to read the numbers at the bottom due to the quality.

Why thank you :) . We all are really happy that our robot actually worked especially because we only got our six wheel drive set up today ;). A lot of the teams are doing really well. For example Sparky :) 128 points i believe it was for the alliance. Great Job!

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

i was kind of disapointed in the practice matches today. i realize they were only practice matches, but still...there was usually one, maybe 2 robots at most that could actually get tubes on. i know for us, we were not very strong because we were letting new members get a chance to drive before we put our strong experianced ones in.

the triad seemed to be having alot of success today. it was fun sitting up in the stands and seeing the same robot come on the field with a different paint job every new match ;-) seriosuly, it was a good design though. i really like the use of the suction cup guys. one thing i noticed is all 3 of you only went for the bottom and never used your elevators. i would have liked to see you try and cap the other arms.

something else i noticed was that some ramp bots were unfolding in the middle of the field randomly. this would be a penalty if they are bigger than 72" (which they were) so i dunno what was up with that and if that will be a concern tomorrow.

i have high hopes for tomorrow. i espect to have fun, no matter what, and anxiously waiting to see how teams do the second day.

I just loaded some videos of a few select teams to my server.

Sparky 384 (one of the VCU Triplets)
http://kyle.fnsnet.net/07FRC/VCU/Sparky_Practice.wmv

1610 (Champs last year, team I mentored)
http://kyle.fnsnet.net/07FRC/VCU/1610_Practice_1.wmv
http://kyle.fnsnet.net/07FRC/VCU/1610_Practice_2.wmv

343 (Champs last year, look promising with some work)
http://kyle.fnsnet.net/07FRC/VCU/343_Practice.wmv

116 (Scores very well)
http://kyle.fnsnet.net/07FRC/VCU/116_Practice.wmv
http://kyle.fnsnet.net/07FRC/VCU/116_Practice_2.wmv

Overall I see Sparky as the best of the Triplets, mostly because of their drivers. The suction cups don't seem to work unless all three cups line up with the Ringer.

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

Folks,

I know that today was only practice - But one couple of minutes of fun was the match in which 1885 Robocats, 384 Sparky, and 1033 managed put 7 in a row for today's high score, 128 points. All three teams were hanging them and we came within a hair's breadth of hanging 8.

The opposing alliance was being very nice to us of course, because they were focusing on their machines more than they were on ours or the match score; but it was fun do to, none the less.

Tomorrow will be fun.

Blake

There have been some low scores, I think some of which may be contributed to drivers still feeling out their robots. You will see higher match scores tomorrow and especially during elimination rounds. Looks like things are running well and one more thing...FLAME ON!;)

P.S.: Good Luck to all teams competing for the VCU Regional Chairman's Award. This regional has some of the best Chairman's award team's and I'm happy I don't have to pick. Good Luck!

high score at VCU so far:

116 got 7 in a row but incurred 20 points in penalties, home zone violation at the end of match.
let it be noted, there was no defense played against them.

Yeah, but now it appears that people have their number. That last match (from what I saw while the stream get cutting on and off) between them and the CircuitRunners #1002 showed that defense is a big factor that has to be accounted for in other regionals.

I worked in my office most of the day and was able to keep VCU up on a second computor. I did not keep track of the score, that is available on line. What I did keep track of was how many ringers of any type scored, how many times a robot scored on a ramp and how many ringers were
scored during auton. I was able to see 62 matches. Total ringers scored 210 or 3.4 per match. Total times a ramp was used to score: 40 or 0.6 per match. Total ringers scored in auton: 5 or 0.1 per match. Just as an obervation, unless there was a blow out of six or seven ringer rows, if a team was able to score on a ramp/lift they one. Auton was not a factor at all, especially if compared to last year were many teams had all ready won the match coming out of auton. Anyone else have any comments on today's action at VCU?

I watched every match today (being home sick does have its advantages) and kept notes for every match. I kept track of red/blue keepers/ringers/bonuses(and what height), the score of the match with a note for any penalties, the number of robots moving in autonomous and the number out of those who had possession of a keeper. I put all the results into an Excel spreadsheet, and I'll keep adding them in tomorrow morning.

Once I have the spreadsheet finished and cleaned up a bit, I'm going to upload it onto CD. I think it's a good way to informally gauge how the game is being played overall, although I'd like to have stats from another regional as well since there's so much variation between them.

Anyway, for what it's worth, here are the totals so far at VCU:

Quote:

Number of ringers scored: 225
Number of spoilers out: 17
Number of spoilers on rack: 1
12 inch lifts: 37
4 inch lifts: 18
Average alliance score: 15.52238806
Average ringers per alliance: 2.472527473
Autonomous movement: 101
Autonomous keeper attempts: 53
Autonomous keepers scored: 6

We were in that match, but we didn't think to play defence after our keeper got stuck around our flag so we stayed in one spot the whole game. 122 let their ramps out early.... again, so they had to stay in the home zone and couln't help.

My only comment is to say that you summed it up pretty well. Even when I looked at the match scores from NJ (I was not able to watch that today), it appears that 30 or 60 bonus points could have swayed the match in all but a hand-full of matches.

Doug G 02-03-2007 22:44

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

I too watched a few matches as well at school and quickly realized the same thing - LOW SCORING. If you ramped - you usually won, but the number of successful ramping/lifting was much lower than you'd think. Alliances getting on ramps often had the problem with the robot just driving up on them - alignment, clearance, steepness, etc..

pyroslev 02-03-2007 23:07

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

One team that had a simple ramp had channel ramp that only got your 4 inches or 15 points. 1655 has their ramps U shaped so you are guided in. A lot of teams have it L shaped to guide it in but they end up falling through a space and beaching themselves.
Steepness/clearance is proving to be an issue. That is often solved with a simple push. But it's nothing that is no expected. There are always little things. THAT is part of the fun of a first weekend regional!

Didn't any of you out there notice that until a spot of bad luck in their sixth and final match of today, a Rookie (2068) went 5 and 0 and held first place???

Not too shabby for a first year team that got organized in 4Q06. They are one of the good ramp bots here.

When 2086's alliance lost in that sixth match, that is when 116 excellent ring-hanger got a chance to move up into the #1 slot.

Right - And before 122 let their ramps out, 1885 held them at bay so that 116 could hang the rings that went up early, without having to deal with getting pounded by 122....

8th over 1st, an upset! 15-16, with four ringers for the 8th alliance and one 4inch ramp for the 1st.

The alliance with 384 lost due to no ramp. :(

I agree, that kind of proved how important ramps are in this game.

NEW 2008 GAME HINT: Not just interact with the field and what you know about, but have to interact with other robots what they do. Put yourself in the minds of your future alliance partners and opponenets. Not just about driving a robot onto a ramp.

I am shocked that #1, #2 and #7 all were knocked out. I thought that #2 vs #7 was the match that would decide the winner. I love the #4 alliance and think they will win. They both have a great scorer (1610-#4 and 540-#6) but 623 is the best ramp I have seen.

Wow, tipping red card in the final finals match. That wouldn't have been called in 2006.

That red card was painfull i'd bet..
But the alliance DQ was unfair to my opinion cause the blue alliance were much better and fully deserved the win..even if 1610 wasnt tipped they still wouldnt have won that match, evenm if they scored another ringer and climbed the ramp...

Congrats to the winning alliance, especially 2108. It's amazing that a rookie team can win as an alliane captain at such a big regional.

I was not a fan of the red alliance's strategy. 623 would have been better off playing defense for at least a little while and then retreating to the alliance station to deploy their ramps. With some more defense the outcome might have been different.

I was there it was an amazing match... I'm sorry we weren't with them for the final one but 1599 shall be remembered for a different reason... anyway my real post is to congratulate 2108 and also ask where I could get a copy of the webcast for today... I want to get the portion of it from match 83 where they start calling us out for Bitting the wire on our control system.

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

The full stats spreadsheet isn't ready for posting yet, but here's a taste of what I've found out:

Average ringers per alliance (all matches): 2.5
Average ringers per alliance (elimination only): 2.7
Average points per alliance (all matches): 18.6
Average points per alliance (elimination only): 35.9

Throughout the entire competition...

408 ringers
9 keepers
1 spoiler (thrown by a human player)
79 twelve-inch lifts
31 four-inch lifts
3943 points scored (after penalties)

Here's something I found interesting...

In the eliminations, there were 1292 points after penalties. Unpenalized, however, the score was 1462*. Of those 1462 points, 1020 were scored by 12" lifts and 90 were scored by 4" lifts. This leaves only 352 points scored by ringers and keepers for all of the eliminations.

So it breaks down like this, in percentages of total points:

12" lifts - 70%
ringers/keepers - 24%
4" lifts - 6%

It would seem ramps are exceptionally important in the eliminations, at least at VCU. I'll be interested to see if the same is true for other regionals as well.

*This number could be slightly off due to the fact that I didn't write down the unpenalized scores, so I had to go back and add points back in. The cause of inaccuracy is when an alliance scored 3 ringers; this could be either 6 points if they weren't directly in a row or 8 points for a row, but I had no way to tell since all penalties were 10 points. However, the variation is minimal; 1462 assumes all the sets of 3 were in rows, and if you assume they were not, it comes to 1447.

Well I'm gonna try and give credit to 422 for helping the winners so much;)(We loaned a backup battery to 540 for the finals and our hacksaw and sawzall to 843 a number of times, not to mention all the cheering!)

But on a serious note, way to go guys, that was an amazing final match, it was very well played by both sides.

The competition was so much fun! Though my team didn't do statistically well, we learned a lot. I even had the distinction of falling asleep ON the robot while everyone was in the pits...and no one noticed. Bumpers are comfy! Congrats to all of the award winners!

congratulations to the winners of the VCU regional. although my team didnt do too well (an easy scapegoat is the 'random' scheduling) i think we have learned alot and look forward to the phily regional. Everyone at VCU did a great job and it was once again the best regional in the country.

Wanted to congratulate Team 2068, Osbourn Park. You guys did an awesome job as a first year team winning 3 awards (highest rookie seed, website award, rookie all-star), as well as beating our alliance in the quarter-finals (A-grade defense on one of the top scorers at the event). Only drawback is I question how far you'll get towards the Rookie All-Star award at nationals, but if we can do it so can a team a couple miles down the road ;) Great job guys.

What a regional, VCU once again proves that it is the best regional in FIRST. I can assure you that 116 had a total blast. I couldn't be more proud of my team, and all the other teams at VCU than I am right now. We might not have ended up on top, but there isn't any better way to go down than that!

We thought [hoped] that too. If 435's radio didn't have trouble during match 3, or if 612's wheel didn't break in the semis, who knows what could have happened. Regardless, the finalists did a terrific job.

Hello everyone..

It was a great day for Me...all during build and then during the qualification
matches things did'nt go well...and then we end up as finalist..Wow.
The important thing to Me this year was just helping get the team there
so the kids could be a part of it and be inspired by it...

I'd like to congradulate our partners 928 (for picking us) and 623.
Also congrats go out to 2108 (nice to see a rookie take it) 843 and 540.
Also congrats to 2068 for the rookie all star award and top rookie seed
as that was us in 2005. They were right next to us in the pits.

I'd also like to give Brandon Martus a big Thanks and well done for the work
He and the crew from IFI did...they were great at fixing bugs (there's our teams). I was a bit surprized He came to our regional.

I like how close it was at the end...see four weeks ago things were so bad
I did'nt even know if we would even be able to go...then things did'nt go well
during matches...and to end up as finalists...was so great...almost as
great as last year for us.

Well have fun guys and have a good year on and off the feild.

Ya I think 540 and 843 were happy that we picked them and they probably thought they would never be picked because they were somewhat high up in the ranking but we picked them based on their skills. By the way I am the guy in the turtle costume. Thanks to everyone who was cheering us and thanks to our alliances.

Man we were so mad. I thought it was over. Everyone knows that that one was really our win. Anyone know when the match archives will come out. I want to really see that match. I thought that 1610 had pushed against the Canadians and knocked them over. Anyways, we still won. Man this rookie years has been great.
