2007 VCU Regional

Figured I'd start this typically explosive thread two years in a row (it tends to be a big thread because of the amount of attention paid to week 1 regionals, and that VCU is typically webcasted).
Anyways, who's coming to the biggest and best regional in America? 116 will be back for the 7th time.

I was just taking a look at the list of teams registered for VCU and noticed a few teams traveling in from a distance. 393 from Indiana and 1002 from Georgia.

32 teams in, only 22 spots left!

The cool pizza places are still there, but my favorite Indian place is gone. Little Caesers with their $5 large pizzas is good, but a few block further is a Piccolas Italy. Best Sicilian pizza. It is $12 for a whole Sicilian, but it weighs as much as three Caesars pizzas.

I live a few blocks away, so I guess I'll write a food guide for the VCU regional sometime in the next few months...

Last year, after the competition, i was told that there is a Persian restaurant somewhere around the corner (some Kabob). I heard its really good and have some **delicious** sandwiches. A food guide would be awesome!! :D

Hi...

Hopefully 1610 will be back...We did'nt get tp the state fair...but a lot of talk has gone on about going back to Richmond. Even if we don't do as well as last year (early this year) we'll still have a blast.

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

I just checked the Team list on the FIRST site. Only 45 teams are signed up and only 9 spots are left. So that would make the total number to 54.
Just curious.......I think last year 64 teams attended VCU, making it one of the biggest regional on the East Coast. Is there a specific reason to decrease the number of teams or am i missing something?

Also, i would like to know the teams who are planning to apply for Chairmans for VCU. I know last year, it was quite a competition (with 21 entries) and Sparky 384 was able to spark another Chairmans. Lets see if its gonna be as competent as last year or what not.

As it has been said in many different threads, the regionals hold spaces for local and rookie teams. That is why there is an apparent drop in the number of teams right now.

As Jeff mentioned, the regionals hold back spots for late registering and rookie teams. Last year VCU had 64 teams (and 5 spots left open), making it the largest regional in America (Chesapeake also had 64 teams. Toronto had 74).
Seeing as this is 116's only regional this year, we will be submitting Chairman's there. I'm willing to bet that 384, 388, 1033, 1541, and 1885 will also submit at VCU (and each has a legitimate chance to win).

This is some truly upsetting news, if true. Ever since the A&E Video featuring 116 and 388 in 2001, we've been two close teams. We even tried to go bowling together during VCU (but sadly, we havn't been able to since 2004 :( , and now might not be able to again this year).

Up to 60 teams (although I think 2074 and 2101 are really the same team, so probably 59). Sadly 393 is the only team that isn't a "regular" at VCU. 843 is making the trek down from Canada for the 3rd time in 4 years. 10 (9) rookies so far as well!

Team 343 - Metal In Motion - from Seneca, SC is planning to make the trip! We look forward to seeing all of our old friends, and making new ones. VCU has always been a good trip for us and this year should not be an exception. We always have a great time. We can hardly wait.
Visit our www.metalinmotion.com web page some time and see how we are doing. Hopefully, our Robot Central web cam will be up and running soon so the spying can begin. Stay tuned for the fun and see you at VCU.

I figured it would be good to drop in here and announce that the Virginia FIRST Alumni Association will be hosting a mingle and coffee at the VCU regional on Saturday, March 3rd.
All those who were on a team and are now post highschool are invited to RSVP on the VirginiaFIRST website. http://www.virginiafirst.org/alumni.shtml

We need your help to reach everyone, so spread the word to your own teams alumni.

Yeah, at the time I posted that, I heard you were leaning towards Chesapeake again. Good luck, and hope you guys can qualify for Championship again (either by Chairman's, EI, or winning), so we can see you there too.

VCU is going to be a POWERHOUSE!
in terms of Robots (on the field) and in terms of teams (off the field; chairmans).

Any estimate on how many teams are planning to submit Chairmans? I know last year it was 25-28......
After scoring a Chairmans at Chesapeake, 612 will be coming back to their home regional :D

Good Luck to all the Teams!

Grundy's team won't be there this year, but they most likely will be next year. We've been having a bit of a hard time since we've been losing mentors and it's just been crazy. A bunch of us (I think 6 or 7 of us) that graduated from 388 are going up to volunteer at the VCU regional, and last I heard Mrs. E was talking about bringing up some of the high schoolers to volunteer just so we can still stay in touch and connected to everyone.

The CiruitRunners will be taking the most beloved 12 hour voyage, to come to one of the coolest regionals in the world. I can't wait to go up there. Just 12 short days to make a 12 hour bus ride. However, VCU is WELL worth the wait.
We too will be submitting our Chairman's Award Entry at VCU. This is going to be very tough. Good luck to all the teams.
And I can't wait to play with that monstrous globe out in front of the museum
See ya'll there. And stop by 1002's pit to say hey.
Good luck with the rest of the season.

401 will be there, and we'll be taking a shot at the Chairman's. It'll be rather interesting as our new head mentor is Sparky alumni. Rather ironic that both 401 and 384 are running mecanum this year too.

I think I might miss Das Goat (165) the most, next to my own team (616) having dissolved due to some school board issues. There was always something about the mixture of goats and robots that I enjoyed (Yes, even more than the mixture of robots with Dogs, Hokies, Knights, Pirates, Tigers and Eagles)

165 was 616's alliance partner in 2004, and we lost by 5pts, or 2 seconds, whichever you like. That was a GREAT year. And I'll never forget 1279's 2005 bot with two arms that reminded me of a tree...

But, for every team that leaves VCU, there is a rookie team that enters. I can't wait to see what the rookies have come up with this year.

The 2004 VCU elimination rounds are, without a doubt, the best at an official FIRST event I have ever witnessed (only IRI 2006 betters it). Between the 4-robots-on-the-bar Quarterfinal match (which was also decided by 5 points), 1236's & 116's tips during the semis (both of which cost us matches), and 33's dramatic trip onto the steps in the final match, those elimination matches absolutely blew me away.

Believe me, it was even more exciting to be on a team from the country that had little funding and to find ourselves competing with, and beating, the big dogs.

It just occurred to me that 616 knocked 165 out of the finals in 2005, after we had teamed up in 2004. Just made my picks for VCU FF too. Way too many teams to choose from so after about the first twenty I gave up.

It's VA, not Pennsylvania. ;) Heck, all the snow melted yesterday (forming nice fog) in Ohio, let alone VA! Oh, and you don't want snow in RVA, you won't get anywhere, they can't plow and they have no salt!

We can plow pretty good, and we have plenty of salt. In fact, since we havent had any major snow all year V-DOT (the plow people) are just itching to get out and plow. we had something small a week or 2 ago and they just coated everything in sand and salt and then snow barely came, if at all in some places. They do a good job plowing, its just that all the citizens think 3" of snow=armagedon and so they buy all the bread and milk from ukrops which is really annoying. the streets are crowded with cars going to the grocery store not snow :-)

The 3" of snow wasn't the issue, it was the inch of ice on top of it ;)

So I suppose it wont be snowing. Atleast Ukrops will be there to console me. I can't wait to get on the road.
Good luck to everyone there.

Has there been any confirmation of this regional being webcasted?

So...who is excited to see the VCU's first set of Robot Triplets?

Teams 1086, 540, and 384 all seem to have collaborated this year, and I can't wait to see them all in action.

When will a webcast or broadcast schedule of this regional be announced? Has anyone gotten an official word one way or another? :)

TO EVERYONE THAT WILL BE ATTENDING THE VCU REGIONAL:

In 2004, almost everyone became sick with Norwalk (the norovirus). It was a very unpleasant experience.

The event will be held in a couple of days and there have been many schools in the Richmond area that have already been contaminated with Norwalk this week. It was on the news many times, I just thought I'd warn everyone.

Some people joke about it a lot, I do sometimes; but this is a very serious issue. Wash your hands people. Use hand sanitizer at any opportunity you have.

The past two years have been great without Norwalk, let's make it three years this year.

It would be a really goot idea for any teams to bring Purel with them, I know there was some that appeared in out pit last year and was used a bunch. I don't know how it go there but it was really good to have. I know this year I have a small bottle that I will be carrying in my pocket all day just because I can't afford to miss anymore school :-D

I was wondering how long it'd take for Norwalk to pop up in the VCU thread...

Seriously, wash your hands and use hand sanitizer. The fact that Norwalk beat us to the regional should only make this more imperative.

Meanwhile, anyone up for some tacos this year?:p

I'm doing the good ol' Ukrop's fried chicken, or maybe starbucks, or probably just gonna skip lunch and eat a big breakfast and dinner. But that was something I didn't think about, make sure that what you are eating hasn't gone bad, as that is the easiest way to get sick.

The globe by far was my favorite. And oh man, the Norwalk at VCU aka robosars decimated our team. We lost like half of our members on like friday or saturday. Luckily we did not bring it back to Georgia.

Joe Matt 27-02-2007 19:38

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

So far the only team that has been hit by the Norwalk is 1086, the other two schools were an elementary and middle school.

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

Oh yes, the science museum is awesome! The last couple of years I've spent just about the entire social just wandering around and checking out the exhibits, they're so cool. I'll definitely be there, probably wandering around monologuing to Josh again about 13 motor transmissions. (Although this year I believe its either 16 or 17 motors, I'm not sure which) So, if you see a dude with red or blue hair wandering by going on about "insane torque, and speed. It'd be unstoppable, it just needs a wheels to harness it, blah, blah, blah" it's probably me. Feel free to say hi, it'll at least give whoever I'm talking to a break.

Cuog 27-02-2007 19:53

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

The science museum is tons of fun its just kind of sad that a lot of exhibits are decaying and in need of repair but on all the drives past(i go past everyday on the way to school) it always looks like theres some sort of stuff going on so hopefully there will be a bunch of new exhibits this year.

This is going to be awesome!! This is my rookie year and I am looking forward to it all, the robots, the fun, the comradery, the norwalk... The science museum sounds like a blast.

P.S. Isn't norwalk a sea mammal found in the antartic waters?:p Can't see that attacking people in VCU:yikes:

Andy, beat me to it in mentioning it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norovirus

This is the bug that is causing all the ruckus. Bad little bug.

That aside, the regional promises to be intense. Four teams at least with mecannums. A triple team this year from Henrico. Should prove interesting.

Joe Matt 28-02-2007 12:08

Re: 2007 VCU Regional

Pretty much the whole darn county of Henrico has the norwalk. Watch out guys, remember, wash those hands, use those hand sanitisers, and don't touch your mouth!
