Not to mention that the game announcer is lacking in enthusiasm, so the matches themselves seem to be pretty boring at the moment. Karthik of course kicks it up a notch but things seem a bit slow, maybe it's just me though.

I have been having vocal issues. I lost my voice and am trying to adapt. Right now I am on break and Charles Offor is doing a great job filling. Hope to get back today but not sure. Darn Colds.

Is it just my computer, or is the sound level really low? I have my computer on full volume and can still barely hear anything.

I hear you about the cold, I've got one myself right now. Charles is doing a good job though, it's really the lack of music through the webcast that is bringing the energy down but I didn't think about Discovery not having the rights to play the music, which makes sense.

Charles is doing a decent job.

The music you hear is ambient music. The voices should be better. The reason is that they are not licenced for the music therefore they cannot broadcast such.

192 online watching when I just checked.

Re: 2007 Greater Toronto Regional

I agree about the music but I sympathize with Discovery for not having the royalties, it would a pretty hard task for them to track down the rights to whatever songs might be played. I was surprised though at how the lack of music does bring things down especially when it is one of those things we typically just take for granted. I think Discovery has been doing a valiant job with their coverage though I hope people are watching because watching teams try to explain what the heck an alliance is or pickings, etc. you can quickly see how outsiders may become lost quickly there are some lessons to be learned there I think. I have to wonder if the host Lori had any idea what she was getting herself int the middle of, as many of us know FIRST is not something that you can truly 'get' until you experience it. I will be curious to see if she makes any comments after the competition on her experiences.

The coverage back home may be a little blah but here it's absolutely amazing - the kids are hamming it up for the cameras, and it's probably the most vocal and loud Friday crowd I've seen in quite a while. The regional committee and the Discovery Channel have really outdone themselves with this one.

But why, oh why, does Karthik get so much face time???? :D

And the American teams sure would like to have our feelings on the event broadcast live *shameless request for attention*. :)

Wooooo!! 1565 with a semi-coherent interview on the webcast!

Also, props to 1565 for putting up 5-6 ringers by themselves (well, really with their alliance partners blocking) in their last match. 1565 really is a team where you don't want to judge by ranking alone.

Edit: On that note, as of 2:44PM, 1565 has the 7th-highest RP in the regional, despite being 62nd. Poor 1565 :(

They are tied in wins-losses with 2056 right now (5-0) so ranking points (depends on losing score) are going to make the difference until one of them loses.

And who will be the opposing alliance that will help them break that tie? Is there anyone here who can pull that off? We shall see. :D

FYI, 1114 received a 10-point penalty for scoring for the opposition, but obviously they had enough offensive points where the penalty didn't matter.

By the way, one hundred million billion negative kudos to the match generating algorithm system....again.

It is illegal to score tubes for the opposition.

<G21> SCORING for opponents - ROBOTS may not HANG a GAME PIECE of an opposing ALLIANCE. If this rule is violated a 10-point penalty will be assessed per infraction. If the ROBOT HANGS a KEEPER of from the opposing ALLIANCE, it will be ignored when determining the score. If the ROBOT HANGS a RINGER on an otherwise empty Spider Leg, it will be SCORED as if it were placed there by the opposing ALLIANCE.

Was a penalty assessed? (If you score enough points, I'm sure you'll gladly take a 10 point penalty to boost your oppositions score)

Well maybe we can hope that someone from Discovery USA is checking out this stream and views it as an opportunity. I'd like to see coverage like this of at least Saturday of Atlanta on the Discovery cable channel in the US (ya pipe dream I know, but hey we can dream right). I have to say again I think this coverage is a lot more faithful to FIRST than other attempts at TV coverage I have seen in the past. Also it is live which is a big plus back when ESPN use to do their thing nationals would be in April and you would have to wait until July or later to see them on ESPN. In terms of the Canada centricness remember that in Canada their are laws governing such things, although it would be cool for them to talk to one American team. I also thought it was interesting that the URL they gave out was the Canada FIRST site as opposed to USFIRST.org. It has been educational though to see how things are done up in Canada.

The only law that could possibly govern something like this would be the CanCon laws that mandate a certain # of hours of Canadian-produced content (approx 30% of broadcasted content). They only apply to broadcast TV, not webcasts. A Canadian program can certainly interview Americans if they want to.

The lack of Americans on the webcast is probably because of the lack of Americans at this regional compared to past years.

I just remembered that they interviewed an american team from Connecticut, for whom this was their 3rd regional. Forget the team though.

Yes a 10pt penalty was assesed... BUT...

i belive they scored 2 tubes for the other alliance so i thought it would have been 20pts of penaltys...

For some reason my screen froze up before they got to the Friday awards, but I did see the day's last qualifying match -- in which 1114 remained undefeated. 2056 looks like a good bet to stay that way also. I have enjoyed watching the incredible offensive power displayed by those two teams.

As we saw last week, expect the defenders to get serious tomorrow. (Psst, Travis -- this includes 48. :) ) Will we see a repeat of Waterloo, where scoring by the mighty tubers was muted in the finals?

I know for sure that Mark Breadner was nominated by team 188. However it would not surprise me at all if he was also nominated by another team or several other teams. Perhaps there is no team number next to his name because we've lost count of the number of teams that he is directly or indirectly responsible for starting in some way. It's about time he received a WFFA and he's surely a strong contender for the WFA at the championship event. I'm sure there'll be more congratulatory posts from people that have been around longer than I have, who can better emphasize the effect Mark Breadner has had on FIRST in Canada.

Anyways, Congratulations (Mr.) Breadner!!!

The answer to ME is simple... there would be too many to list :p . The GTR, and even FIRST in Canada will forever be known as the house that Breadner(s) built. And I mention that to recognize the incredible efforts of Rhona Breadner, and even the Breadner kids as well! Rhona is so humble that many do not realize just how integral she is to our program here north of the border - FRC, VEX, FLL and even future things I cannot yet speak of ;).

But Mr. Breadner's history extends across a pleathora of teams all across the nation. If you wanted to get technical though I believe Mr. Breadner has really only been directly involved as a mentor with one team - 188.

Re: 2007 Greater Toronto Regional

Mark Breadner is one of the awesomest people in FIRST, but he's also unfortunately one of the most unknown relative to his contributions. Ever since we took the plunge to go to the inaugural Canadian Regional in 2002, 48 has consistently been amazed by the Herculean efforts Mark and his family (along with the countless other notable volunteers up north) have poured into developing FIRST in Canada. He and his staff have always made us and all the other American teams feel most welcome at their event, and this has continued with the passing of the torch to Vance Scott and now Karen Rosenthal. The Canadian regionals are the best planned, staffed, and executed events in all of FIRST (they even give IRI a run for their money :D ), and no other event can match the fun and excitement buzzing through the building, especially on Saturday. Mark is one of the people who've been there all along, guiding FIRST in Canada to the success it is today.

Mark, congratulations, and thanks again for all the wonderful memories you and your family have helped bring to Team 48 over the years.

I think tomorrow we will play defense on 1114 while we're partnered with them just to even up the odds a bit. You know, help push em into a corner, limit them to maybe 4-5 ringers. Maybe 4 vs. 2 would make it a fairer fight against these guys? :)

Travis, I would double-dog dare you guys to do that -- except for two things: (1) it wouldn't be fair to make your third alliance partner play 1-on-3 while 48 and 1114 spar in the corner, and (2) stopping 1114 for one match might not significantly effect the overall event results, anyway.

Yes indeed....but it sure would be funny - Run away! Run away!

The trick to defending 1114....any strong offensive bot, really....is to defend their entire alliance appropriately, which requires the appropriate partners who are inclined to play the appropriate style of defense with the necessary communication. It can be done; the question is, will it? Tune into the Discovery Channel webcast on Saturday to find out!

Good luck today to 1141, 1281, and 1565!

I also want to point out to any teams that scouted 1565 in waterloo and deemed them unreliable and highly defendable: They haven't had a single breakdown, they've scored 3-6 ringers consistently in all their matches, and their drivers have gained enough skill to deke out defenders. They would make a good 'diamond in the rough' pick that would be overlooked by other teams going by ranking.

Edit: Come to think of it, any scouts out there probably won't be on CD until tonight, when it's all over. ... :(

1565 FOR THE WIN!!! 51-38

Yeah, well on thursday I rented a 2007 HONDA FIT automatic:

~100hp I4
0-60 time measured in decades
Black
Cool foldy seats in the back

On a webcast-y note, I'm finding that the pre-taped interviews in the pits are having no sound. Or the sound is so ridiculously quiet that I can't hear it when I have the volume set right for the matches.

I have made them aware. It seems that they might have a hardware issue and are now working on it.

Whoa, here's a semi-shocking statistic:
Average score for red: 40
Average score for blue: 30

Are there any bright lights in Blue's face?

This piece about Where's Waldo has sound at the correct volume.

Edit: And 2056 is now the ONLY undefeated robot at GTR, as 1114 succumbs to drivetrain difficulties (apparently)

It seems that 1114 had a radio problem that no reason was found.

Tip: If the webcast goes all slideshow on you, just press stop and start, rather than refreshing the page.

Hooray for 2 of my teams (1141 and 1565) beating another of my teams (1281) in the 2nd last match!

And congrats to 1141 for steadily climbing the ranks to #12! They might get to pick for the first time in their history!
edit: #13 final position!

I am not sure but that looked suspiciously like an alliance selection where every one actually knew what they were doing, I am impressed. Every one at least had a pick list.

Also is it just me or does every one love Where's Waldo?

Does anyone have a list of the alliances? I'm guessing 2056 went with 1114 and 1334 with 854.

Code:

seed        pick1        pick2
2056        1114        176
1334        610        2166
1305        854        1241
1312        296        1141
1846        1503        188
1901        772        1680
1006        379        48
1404        1482        773

It's pretty crazy after going to waterloo, when you read the 2nd-pick list for GTR and realize that they are all very effective robots. 176, 48, 1680 are all SECOND picks. That's crazy.

I have to give some props to Karthik for that awesome commentary. That was as good as any sports commentator. I hope Discovery continues to cover events with this format. So far, I've loved it.

Great job everybody, I loved watching this broadcast, the Discovery Channel really knows how to do it!

I particularly enjoyed watching the alliance of 1006, 379, and 48. Seeing teams gun up ELITE's ramp brought back chills from the Buckeye regional (291, 48, 379).

As exciting as the matches were, the highlight in my mind has to be 48's interview on their control system, I was behind the lexan with 48 all throughout Buckeye eliminations and I never noticed the "Viagra Button" :ahh: .

Great job to everyone who competed and to everyone who helpd make the regional and broadcast happen!

yes it did...It kinda caught up a little....it sucks that they skipped it though.

the webcast caught up to the chart...the chart was ahead by a good 7 minutes...you could see who won way before the match was cast.

Congratulations to 771 on the regional Chairman's Award. :) A great program, having a great year with the win at Waterloo last week and now this well deserved recognition.

(I am wondering how, during their otherwise excellent webcast, Discovery Channel Canada missed the opportunity to interview some of your team? Maybe I just missed it?)

The party must still be going on -- 771 doesn't have far to drive to get home from Mississauga.

I hope they're partying, because they've earned it! Good luck finding them. :D

Figures, out of all the things we've said over the years in support of FIRST in Canada, the one thing that gets aired on live webcast TV is our "Viagra Button". :p

I only put that on there after the kids nagged me to do it and I finally started to think it was funny. :D By the way, the kid interviewed was our OUTSTANDING driver, Johnny Pasco, who still never ceases to amaze me with his relentless ability to stick to robots like glue. I know he had Greg Phillips from 1114 scared. I wish we could have set up the offense vs. defense matchup I was hoping for. Stupid tread....:o

Congrats to all winners - it was a great event!

I have no idea what caused it - it was a clean, straight rip all the way through. We checked the tension of the treads between each match and it hadn't changed. We were pushed sideways a bit when the offenders fought back a bit in earlier matches - maybe that was the start of it? Oh well, considering other teams' issues with Brecoflex over the years, I like the success we've achieved with them.

i knew the belts were going to fail soon on you guys when i saw your driver try to turn into the bot that was pushng on your side for the entire match, a few matches earlier. When it happened i was not surprised but thought, i shoulda come down and told you. O well stuff happens and the regional was great to see and all. a lot less of a drive then others i knew to get home too.:p ;)

I can probably get you a copy of the video.

I am working on splitting up all the matches from GTR, and will try and get the eliminations up as soon as I can... but a month of robotics means I have a little bit of school work to catch up on :ahh:, so I may not get all the matches up for a week or so.
