Ben, we're building robots out of thousands of dollars of electronics and caffiene! Of course we're nerds! And proud of it! :)

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
Don't get me started on the horrors and drawbacks of abusing stimulants... There will be plenty of time to get enough sleep for Saturday, especially since field setup starts at 7am. ;)
I'm expecting some awesome matches out there, since it is the last opportunity for everyone to show what they can do. The elimination matches should be plenty interesting because there are so many robots out there that can play the game well, and plenty of complimentary alliances. When you get to the eliminations, there are no reasons to hold back. :D It'll will be sad for me (and a handful of other people) once the final match is played, because it will be the last time we will build an OCCRA robot (Woo Seniors!) But that's not to say I won't be coming back to help. _Alex |

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
Me, being the complete dork that I am, when my English teacher asked what was going on this weekend i told my class to come. not that anyone actually will, but it was worth the effort :) I"m excited to see the championship match, I have a feeling the last few matches are going to be AWESOME. not only that, but I'm curious to know whether my predictions of winners and alliances and such are true or not .. :)

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
I think the 2 matches played before picking are going to crazy. If you look at the standings the teams ranked from 4 to 13 can move up or down and can turn out any way. The finals are going to be great see everyone there :)

"expect the unexpected"...... MIX IT UP!!!!!!!! :D

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
I think it all went well. There were some pretty great matches out there today. I think that everyone was extremely competitive. Congratulations to everyone and my thanks goes out to 245. You guys were an awesome partner and we worked well together, I enjoyed working with you guys. :)

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
It was a great competition, and I hope everyone who was there had an awesome time. I'd like to give a big thanks to our alliance partner 47 for picking us. It was great playing with you guys and we'd love to do it again (you free sometime early April? ;) )
[shameless plug] I know some teams stopped by but I'm not sure everyone saw. Team 245 had a small presentation in the corner as a teaser for our kickoff class. At the FIRST kickoff in Novi this year, we'll be teaching a class on co-processors and FIRST. We've created a stable development environment and you can be up and running in 5 minutes with a laptop and a little duct tape. We'd like to encourage all teams to send at least one member of your programming team to the presentation. Team 245 is looking to redefine the way FIRST looks at autonomous, but we can only do it with your support. We're currently in the process of updating our website and preparing it as a resource for teams, to check it out (or help out, it's a wiki), visit http://adambots.gotdns.com/cgi-bin/view/Main/DeltaForce [/shameless plug] |
Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
Yes, I would also like to thank you guys. It was great working with all the members of your team especially in the stands. Thanks to your team for joining in our cheers. This meant a lot to me especially because I along with another member of our team lead the spirit division. Thank you Pontiac. GO 47!

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
this was my teams first year in OCCRA and the championship was the most agressive and exciting thing ive ever seen.

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
Were you guys with the IA? If you were then I wouldn't question why you think the way you do. The IA are not very good losers. They've got this whole thing where their team members are not satisfied with anything but first place. No offence to anyone on their team or anything but I just think that is completely against the spirit of OCCRA. True the championships are intense but it should never go as far as the IA takes it. Not everyone on their team is like that though. Its just a select few people that ruin the fun for everyone.
If you weren't with the IA all I have to say is get used to it. I know it sounds harsh but FIRST is even worse. Wow I'm doing good with rhymes today. The competition is very intense at FIRST because everyone always wants see their work pay off at a competition. However, the competition should never get so fierce that one abandons the policy of gracious professionalism. But try to adjust to this competition. Competition is only more fierce from here on out. Best of luck to you guys in your first year. |

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
Matt, it is only natural for a team to be disappointed to lose. Since I am certain you understand that, may I assume that you are referring to a specific instance in which you felt this was taken to an extreme? If so, then I must say, it is not in good taste to make overall judgements (especially in a public forum) about a team based on a single event. In any case, it may be a little more GP and convincing to respectfully make a solid argument instead of simply putting forth a seemingly unwarranted opinion.
Also, I think that outlawfan's post carried a positive connotation; it seemed to me that he/she was impressed by the level of competition and enjoyed the championship event. If this is the case, it would seem that your criticism of the intense competition in OCCRA and FIRST was unnecessary. I am sure you had only the best intentions, but please support your opinions with hard facts. |
Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
I'm sorry...I wasn't going to say anything, but after sleeping on it, I am.
I'm extremely proud at what the IA kids did this year, especially at the championship. They could have sat back and not tried to win the last two matches of the season taken what might have been an easier road, but that, IMHO, would have been the non-gracious professional thing to do. Instead, they went out pulled out two great rounds and moved into 6th place and tried their best with a great alliance to win it from there. I don't know if all teams in that position would have done the same. The students on the team have incredible heart, and have put so many hours of hard work, I don't understand what is wrong with wanting to win. Could you elaborate on what you are basing your attack on? And just a warning since I believe you are a newbie to CD... Be careful about what you post in the regular forums, especially once FIRST starts. There have been a lot of posts in the OCCRA sub-forum that will get critizied heavily in the "general population". The comments you made would be frowned on as well. Normally, if you have a real problem with a team, you would mention it to the mentors of the team, not post it on a public forum. Anyway, congrats to all the teams in OCCRA. It was a great season and the matches at the championship were great and exciting. |

We obviously want to win. Do you know what OCCRA stands for? Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association. Yes, competitive, because winning is the proof that you have been able to build a successful robot. It is not about beating the other teams, its about working with the other teams to win against yourself, push your limits and stimulate your creativity to come up with a robot that you can be proud of, because you put it together to the best of your ability. But OCCRA is also about having fun and making friends. I have met wonderful people during this competition, and sometimes some not so wonderful ones. But hey, believe it or not, at or dinner table after the championship everybody was laughing about past events and thinking about moving forward, rather than weeping about a "defeat", because really there was none. All the teams out there might not hold the winner's award in their hand, but they all share the same prize: knowledge, friends and memories no other event could have brought to them. I take your comment personally, and I really hope some day you realize how wrong you are, not necessarily in what you say but in the way you behave. You should never get to hate another team, and if you do, you should work toward trying to understand them and work with them rather than go cry out your frustration on a forum. Reading your post, it looks like you are the one carried away by too much competition, not us. Is it because we did not do the wave with you? Francois - Proud to be 469 (Do it as a Team!) |

Your comments reflect negatively on Team 245. However, just as I do not hold your personal comments against 245 as a whole, you should not hold an individual's behavior against 269 as a whole. We accept that you made a mistake in posting this; please accept that someone from 269 may have made a mistake in how he or she behaved at the competition. To the OCCRA community in general, please note that there have been several negative posts made lately. These posts can cause hard feelings and negative opinions of you personally, your team, and OCCRA. Let's clean it up, OK? |

Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
As Team Captain of 245, I would like to apologize for Matt's unfounded comments. As Gary said two posts up, this indeed does reflect very poorly on our team, and it is unfortunate that I have been away from my computer all week and not caught this sooner.
I would like to begin by making it clear that those thoughts are by no means the opinions of our team; my sister was a founding member of 469, and I drilled more that my fair share of holes in bananas. We respect the IA as fierce competitors, and, honestly, their practice of never giving up on their robots, of always improving, is what inspired us to rip off our basket and add an arm, even if there was only time to use it for championships. Quite honestly, if it were not for the IA's inspirational spirit of never giving up on improving their robots, we probably would not have won. That aside, I will speak with Matt on Monday when we are back at school. He does not have the best track record with electronic communication, as the principal of Stoney Creek (where we're trying, but failing, to start a team) can probably attest to. I appreciate the careful and measured words of advice given by everyone here, as well as your understanding with Matt as a new member of the CD community. Again, apologies. As a team, the Adambots have nothing but respect and admiration for the IA, you guys are a great team and turn out great robots. We look forward to competing with you next year at West Michigan (if you ever pay). |

I'm sorry if we did anything to offend you, but I'm on 469 and I really didn't see what you were talking about. Sure we were disappointed that we didn't win, but I feel like you took this to an extreme. Our team was happy with what we did and with our season. And yes. Many people on our team know what FIRST is like. I'm sorry you feel that way about us and if we did anything to personally offend you, please take it up with our team, not on a public forum. |
Re: [OCCRA]: Championships
I, as another team captain of 245, would like to extend my olive branch. I was proud to beat IA; I really can't lie about that. However, the feelings I have for IA have never extended beyond perhaps a friendly rivalry, especially considering that I have at least one friend on 469. Regardless, at some point, this topic is going to get old and this will all blow over. At least I hope so.
