Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

There have been 15 people sitting outside our local Wal-Mart since Wednesday night. They thought that it opened at midnight this morning to sell the PS3. I guess the management didn't feel like telling them that was only at the Super Wal-Marts and that they would have to wait until 7am.

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

I'll be getting the PS3, but since I'm not crazy enough to camp outside of a store since Monday to get one (WCBS, a news radio station in NYC, was talking about the hardcore gamers, a few of which had done that), I'll wait for a bit and hope the price goes down. If I have to, I'll get it after the holidays, and hopefully then it will go down a lot.

I woke up around 4:30am
Got to Circuit City around 5:15am
Saw around 50+ people in line
Meet with a friend, who actually works for CC
Entered through the employee entrance around 6:45am, :)
By 7:00am, i had a PS3 in my hand, ;)
Around 7:15am i sold it for 100% profit :D (to the 4th in last person in line).
And for once in my life i'm early at work :p (Starts around 8, but i'm already sittin on my desk)

That's great :D ... although I've heard they're going for $2,000+ on EBay- should've kept it and made more money there.

People are bidding on 'nothing' on Ebay. It really doesn't mean that they are gonna end up buying for that price. Well some will......but why take risk.
Plus i wanted to be at work on time....... 100% profit is not that bad overall...... This PS3 thing pretty much paid off for all of my travel expenses over the FIRST season :p

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

To be completely honest, $600 for a PS3 is absolutely absurd. And I;m not even that impressed with the PS3's hardware and graphics, the 360 is a year older and personally, I think it's a better system. I even think $400 for an XBOX360 is still high, and all for a game. Also, I'm completely against getting profit for one after you purchase it. I understand that you put up $600 and get $xxxx.xx back for it and you've made good profit, but whatever floats your boat I guess. Technically, that's scalping, which in ticket sales you go to jail for...so why does that not apply to here?

On a side note, I knew a guy in college, who somehow bought 8 360's on launch day. within an hour of getting home, all 8 were on ebay and I believe each sold for 2k. For spending $3,200 up front he made $16,000 in profit, enough to buy himself a new car in cash. Even though that I'm against that...you gotta admit, that's a pretty good idea. Lucky guy...

This is legal in many states. There are businesses and services that provide "re-selling" of tickets. In Indiana, you just cannot scalp on the property of the event facility.

I'm wondering how many of them are going to be 'lost' in shipping. I imagine there are more than a few hardcore gamers who didn't get their PS3 working at package sorting facilities.

Re-selling is one thing, re-selling for profit is another. If I remember correctly, selling an item for originaly price is legal, but if the intent is to make a profit then that's where it becomes illegal. Hence he resold the product to someone on the premises...wouldn't that insinuate scalping? (if I'm wrong I'll shut up, but I am curious).

Would you feel any different if Sony released them directly onto ebay?

THAT would be a smart business move for Sony... set the base bid price at X and let them go up... only release 50 or whatever, and then maybe release them a week before release in stores... create a scramble for them?

Not a bad idea...(gears turning)

I think the whole business of waiting in line for 5 days to buy a PS3 is ridiculous. So many people have to be the first on there block to own something new.
If I was to buy a PS3 (of which I have no intention of doing) I'd just wait a few weeks and than buy it.

Well i was in line for 39 hours. i got the ps3 with my friend going halves. So we spent around $780 and they are easily going to almost $3000 on ebay. I def. think it was worth the 39 hour wait. Just let's hope the next time i do this i will live in either FL or CA.

What these people are doing is distributing. They are on-official distributors of this product.

Distribution happens every day, in every city across the country. The company that employs the largest number of people in this country does the same thing. They buy something for one price, then sell it for another price. Like it or not, this is supply and demand... the root of healthy capitalism. Hurrrah Adam Smith!

It would be one thing if someone was buying out all of the bread and water right before a big storm as going to hit and then trying to re-sell the product for ridiculous prices after the storm tore up the town. Bread and water are necessity items, obviously. Buying a luxury item like this at one price and then selling it to a paying customer for a higher price is perfectly fine. No one NEEDS a PS3. The seller is providing a service to someone who was not as prompt and eager to stand in line.

I completely agree with you. When the PS2 came out, I had purchased one right off the bat and ended up having many problems with the console eventually forcing me to purchase a new one. I believe that many of these 1st generation PS3's will end up having unforeseen problems that could not be worked out without the stress tests of the real world. That is the reason that I will never wait in line again to purchase a system on it's release day.

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

I'm not sure whats the crying is all about...........

If something is not important to one, it might be important to someone else. I sold my PS3 to a guy who was a professional gamer and a graphic designer, he was waiting in line for more than 5 hours.....
Members who are complaining that waiting in line doesn't worth it, needs to look on the bright side. May be it was not important for them to stay in line for just a gamebox, but it might be important for someone else. If we all have a craze about FIRST, others also have a craze about Games and other things.

What if FIRST 2007 Game is to be released in a limited amount, and one has to wait in line to get it?
What if limited number of people are going to be allowed in a FIRST competition, and one has to camp over night just to enter the Arena?
Will you stay in line for all the above or not? Well i guess you will, because its something important to you.

Even though I'm not a gamer, but I'm still offended by a lot of comments in this thread.

As far as re-selling goes....... its called fair trade. And if i want to sell my PS3 for profit, I've all my rights to do a fair trade in terms of cash/check. Believe me, without fair trade, USA economy will be nothing.

Also, if you think all of these games worth nothing, or less money; than one should read simple phenomena of Supply, Demand and Profit. These Products are priced according to the laws of economics. Demand is high, supply is short....price goes sky high (even on ebay).

AND if you think that gaming is a waste of time, than i can name a lot of games which actually helps people with everyday skills.
Lets say World of Warcraft. At least that game will teach you the methods of economy and 'fair trade.'

Bottom line is that before we bash someone/something, its better to put ourselves in that position and realize how important it might be for other person.

A couple of my classmates did a story on this for our school's TV show. There were people lines up over 24 hours ahead of time to get their hands on this system in Chicago. I don't know why.
The one thing we can thank the technology gods for is that these are lines for a gaming system, and we are no longer in lines for toys like the Furby.
I am perfectly happy with my NES and Super Mario Brothers.
My ex tested the wii and did say it was an amazing system so anyone waiting for those have fun! I have college loans to pay off so I should have enoguh money to buy a $600 PS3 in about 6 years.

Such stupidity over a toy.

Elgin, the shooting was not over a PS3. Two people did an old fashioned holdup of the people waiting in line for a PS3. Assuming one or two people there planned to pay cash, that is a lot of cash.

Even though it is "just a toy," it has a street value of over $1000, some are reporting selling it for $3000. You could buy a used car for that, or pay the rent on my whole apartment for 5 months.

Our society celebrates money and materialism. Chasing that brings out the worst in some people.

An excellent point of view, this is.

But as far as I am concerned, no way in heck is a PS3 coming into my house. For $500, I could in theory build a low-end PC that could do so much more.

I'm not getting a Wii quite yet either. I am still and will be enjoying my Gamecube when Twilight Princess comes out for it in December. Then there is my DS Lite, which will be getting FFIII (YAY!!!) and an imported version of the DS Browser once I can get a hold of one...

Still all Nintendo nonetheless.

I know someone who had an extra parking pass for the Rutgers/Louisville game, so he put it up on eBay. The But It Now price was $15, which is the price of the parking ticket itself. So here we have a guy who just wants to make his money back on the parking pass. But it ended up selling for $55. From what you're saying, he scalped the parking pass....but is it really scalping?

And like Andy said, scalping is legal in some states. I mean, Rutgers announces at every game that game tickets can be bought at the ticket office or at StubHub.com, which is essentially a website for scalpers.

Your first post said nothing about preordering. It reads as if your friend let you the back door so you didn't have to sit in line for a day or two.

Either way, he should not have let you in the back.

So lets reverse the situation. If you were in my position, would you do it? Would you rather wait in line for 20+ hours or just get away with something which is NOT illegal and none of the 'Code of Behavoir' (for any retailer) says thats its wrong. We all have to wait in line to get inside the arena before the competition begins; but if you know a person and they can let you in first, would you do it or not?

I would argue that this is not pointless at all, but rather very important. If I knew a person to let me in early at a competition to work on a robot would I? No. It is against the rules of the competition.

I have a question for you Imad. Since it is survival of the fittest, why not just steal a PS3 from the first person to leave the store with it? How do you form your "ethical" decisions? A little cheating is ok, but a lot is not? Where do you draw the line? How do you decide that line for yourself?

Just because no one is perfect is no reason to try your hardest to do good.

I don't think i mentioned ANYWHERE, to enter the 'arena' to work on the robot. If you read this statement :"We all have to wait in line to get inside the arena before the competition begins; but if you know a person and they can let you in first, would you do it or not?", and assumed that i meant to enter to 'work on a robot'.....well as you said thats illegal. But would you just enter the arena........may be because its cold outside....maybe because you don't want to sit inside for another hour or so, or maybe for any other reason which doesn't defy the Book of Rule?

A good example of "over analyzation." Stealing is against the Law. Did i break any law? Please try to understand the point.

Quote:

Cheating? I think its defined as "To violate rules deliberately." And i don't see myself voilating any rules. But i would agree that it was a loophole in the system; i just used it to save some time. And if you think my friend did the wrong thing......well acoording to retailer, Employees can't buy PS3 on November 17th. But it doesn't state that when store opens they can't walk in with a friend from the side entrance.

Quote:

Where do you draw the line?
Thank God i didn't steal a PS3 or kill anyone for it. I walked into the store, picked one, walked to the Checkout point, paid with money that i've earned honestly, and walked out. I know my limits, and my lines are well drawn.

How do you decide that line for yourself?
I think that question is a good way to respong to Alex comments
Quote:

Alex, you have to draw a line for yourself. If you want to break a law, you can but you have to face the consequences. And please do let me know where did i break a law in this situation. If you are mad that you've to wait in line, while i got away with it, than your anger is justified. I can't do anything about it. Sorry.

Thats right. You may want to call retailer and let them know about it, so that next time they can cover their loopholes well, and no 'injustice' will happen, in your terms.

I wouldnt doubt it if they "magically" up production and have them out by the end of the week.

Somehow I doubt any company would want to miss holiday opportunities.

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

So to get this thread somewhat back on topic, here's my story of waiting in line for my Wii after an exhausting weekend.

I woke up at 5 AM Saturday morning for Ramp Riot, and returned home somewhere between 7 and 7:30 PM.
At 8:30, my mom and sister were going to go to Target to pick up a couple things, and I went along, curious to see how many people were lined up already. (I already knew that this specific Target had 69 confirmed Wiis in stock.) We arrived at around 9 o'clock, and counted approximately 30 people in line. We bought what we needed, and I picked up a 3 pack of controller gloves/wrist straps. As we were leaving Target I decided to wait in line, and had my parents bring a chair + blankets.

The store was opening up at 8 AM, but at 7 they were going to distribute tickets to the first 69 people in line, guaranteeing them a system. Both the store management and those of us waiting in line were all very cooperative and organized. A list was started with the names of those who were already in line (at 10:00), and as more people came, their name was added to the list. (This was to prevent cutting in the line, saving spots for friends who weren't there yet, etc.) At this time, I was number 36. The night went by pretty quickly, a bunch of us were playing multiplayer Mario Kart DS, and the group to my right had a fire going. By around 2:00, the line had exceeded 69 hopeful customers.

The list of the first 69 people that we had created was given to the management as they came in for their shift. At 7 o'clock, the manager came outside and announced how the tickets guaranteeing a console would be given to the first 69 people in line, and those who do not receive one might as well just leave and go home or try a different store. She stated that she had saw our list, but that they could not follow it, despite the urge of the majority of those in line. When the tickets were given out, everyone was two numbers behind than what they had been on the list. Along with the ticket, we were given a card with a checklist of games and accessories. When 8 o'clock arrived, everyone went into the store to the electronics department in numerical order, and we were called up to claim our Wiis, and checkout. At first the process was taking a while due to credit card problems, but it soon sped up, and as we were waiting in line, an employee would gather all the items checked on the accessories list, and deliver them to you. I ended up leaving the store at around 9 AM, about 12 hours later from when I had originally took my place in line.

Retailers will have more in before Dec 31st. Either the store warehouses didn't deplete their inventory or PS3 is just trying to make people not count on getting one by harassing the stores every single day. If you remember correctly, no one thought that the 360 was going to be out again the launch in order to get for Christmas. My store got 3 more shipments of them after launch before Christmas. Granted, they were small shipments but still, the next shipments date aren't going to be that spread out.

why doesn't anyone believe me?

I was in line for 39 hours, don't ya think i would talk to the managers and such any of that time?

Did you know:
They are having trouble?
They cut the first shipment down from 400,000 to less then 200,000? there is no confimation on how low it did go.
they have changed the release date 3 times?

I don't belive you because December 31st is a month and a half away. That is huge for modern production times. It is illogical for them to have a month and a half hole in their production line. Slim pickings they may be, but there will be more available before Christmas.

I'm not going to pay $600 for a console (I'd be better off getting a laptop).
I don't want a Wii (Kiddie games do nothing for me)
So it looks like the Xbox 360 is the best bet out there for me.
But I think I'll Wait and see and just keep playing with my PSP at work on my breaks and on long trips. Can't do that with a console.

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

I worked on Friday from 12pm-12am, then on saturday from 930am-12am...as I'm leaving work I get a call from my friend asking me to wait with him in line for him to get one, and then he asked if I'd buy one and his parents pay me back so his brother can have one for Christmas (he no longer lives with his family)

So we get there around 12:30 and there were about 12 or so people ahead of us...and as time went on, we found ourselves really bonding with those around us, someone would go to Dunkin Donuts to get coffee, and another would go to the diner (great to be in Jersey) and get soup for everyone. Then when the 30 people got there (Wal-Mart only had 30 units) they let the group into the foyer of the store so we didn't have to wait in the cold.

So at 5 o clock they give the 30 people their vouchers. The vouchers mean that if you have this piece of paper, you're entitled to buy the system. No sooner did people have the vouchers in their hands then they started selling them. One guy sold his for $150 because he worked at Best Buy so he'd get one regardless. Around 5:30 a boy around 17-18 years old came in and asked if anyone was willing to sell their voucher. One guy sold his to the boy for $300 dollars. Immediately after selling it the guy booked out of there...later we found out that the guy led the boy to believe that the system was paid for, not that he'd have to shell out the cost of the system.

Of course everyone felt bad, but eventually the boy got his money, and realized that he should have asked. Then we realized over the exictment, if we were in the same position, we would've done the same thing.

At 7 they opened the doors and we got our Wiis, I take the system over to my friend's house to get the money from his mom...she gives me the money and my friend goes "Merry Chirstmas George" he bought me a Wii!!

Not only was I exstatic over that, but we really don't get to hang out much, so waiting with him and just hanging out for 7 hours...I truly feel that was the real present.

Sorry about the long post, I just wanted to share my story of waiting on line.

I know all that information. It isn't like that information isn't on all the gaming sites.

I work at a major electronics retail store. What the mangers tell you isn't always what is the truth. Its to save themselves in case things do happen and they dont come in and also so that the retailor's calls about the systems get reduced. Last year for the 360 Launch, I worked at Customer Service. 9 out of 10 calls was about that system. This year, I'm in a different department and I still get calls about the system. That date could also be when the retailers plan to have them in the Ad so a set amount will be set aside for that week's ad. Those things happen all the time.

My fiance waited in line last night with some of our fellow employees to get a Wii. He got there at 10pm Saturday night. I couldn't wait in line because I had to work the Launch (every employee in the store, even if they weren't Media had to work the launch if they were scheduled this morning) The line had filled up at around midnight at my store and we had 84 units.

For games, My fiance and I got Zelda, Red Steel and Happy Feet. All are really fun.

A similar situation happened to me last year when I was trying to pick up an Xbox 360. I stopped at Gamestop at the Enfield Mall in Connecticut. I asked the person working the counter if they knew when they would be getting a new shipment of 360's. He said, "We don't tell normal customers when we will be getting new shipments." I said, "Okay, well I'm a never customer." Then I walked out... I will never buy anything from there.

It was crazy over here in Rochester. People were doing anything they could to get there hands on the console. Since some stores didnt allow people to wait next to the store people hid in trash cans. It was crazy haha! Im just going to wait another year to buy it.

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

It only took two hours to get my Wii. I knew that the Target store in my city had 60 systems and would open up at 8:00 am, so I decided to check it out at around 7 pm on Saturday night and not one person was in line. I was planning on showing up at around 5 am but I overslept didn't get there at 7 am. I was 57th in line out of 60 people, so I really lucked out. Around 7:45 am the manager came out and handed out tickets, and we were allowed in the store at 8:00 am. The line went very smoothly, and by 9:00 I left with a Wii.

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

...I am lozer. Didn't get enough babysitting jobs, so I cannot afford the Wii as of right now. *cries* I really wanted one! But I was only able to save up about $170...*sniffles* Oh well, I guess I'll just get one...later. Hopefully.

PS3? As of right now, I'm not all that interested in it. Too much bloody money for a system, in my opinion. I mean sure, BEAUTIFUL graphics, but I don't want to spend that much money. I'm more for games I can have fun with, then more cinematic games where I watch scenes more than I play.

I'll wait...I dunno...maybe 2 or 3 years to geat a PS3. Why rush? The only thing I play on the Playstation is Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts...*shrugs* I'll just be a little behind, thats all. I don't mind waiting.

But I'd really like a Wii! Although, I don't mind waiting that long for this one either. I still have my cube I can play with...How I love my Gamecube! *snuggles with it*

As for Xbox/360...bleh. I'm not an Xbox-fan. *waves anti-Xbox sign* ;)

Well. Thats all I'm really doing as of right now! =D I'm quite content with the way things are.

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

Well, it's time to tell me story then XD

I'll make this short...

I waited 14 hours at Target...
With some friends...
At 30-something degrees...
And it was snowing...

I thought the wait was worth it, especially when I found out that there were about...oh...a little over 60 people in line when I woke up from a 2-hour nap...

(and the store only had 60 units)

But it was a fun experience...

(And to know that it was my first time waiting in line made the experience even better)

Re: PS3 + WII... who was waiting or will wait???

I ordered my Wii on Amazon, but since the USB/Ethernet adaptor won't come out until 2007 I'm going to get a third-party adaptor that doesn't require drivers. That way I can go online, because I don't have Wi-Fi and the USB dongle thingy refused to work on my PC. I'm especially excited about the Virtual Console having TurboGrafx on it, including Super Star Soldier, which is awesome. :)

I've already seen them in stock at various stores, it is just a little sporadic about who is sold out at any given time.

The free trial of the Wii Opera browser (which came out today) is really nifty. It's very easy to use/navigate, and the pages load pretty quickly. In fact, I'm using it right now to reply to this.
The length of the download, for me, took between 1 and 2 minutes. I can't wait to see what added features the final version (predicted to come out in March 2007) contains.
