Encoder Pinout

Hi

For the upcoming year our team was thinking about using encoders.. i know that some of you have had success with the E4 shaft encoders from www.usdigital.com and it seems pretty easy to get them to work and hooked up. I was looking at the E6 version and noticed that it was 5 pin as opposed to 4. What is the Index pin used for?

Thanks

Scroll down a ways on that page, to see that the Index output "provides a single pulse per revolution." It lets you detect a specific absolute orientation of the shaft, rather than just giving information on relative movement.

ah, alright that makes sense
so i would still be able to use the phase A and phase B lines like normal, correct?

Thanks

Re: Encoder Pinout

If you ignore the index output, the E6 is electrically identical to the E4. The A and B outputs work just the same.
