This application cycle is for the third year. The program it's modelled after, the NASA Academy, has been going on for more than thirteen years, I think. So yes, the intention is that it'll be around for a while, with plenty of time for those of you still in high school to apply. :)

To all my fellow procrastinators out there just for the record this application is pretty long. If you do not start today you will probably have trouble finishing it.

About when should we expect to hear back from them? Or is it one of those things that they only contact you if you make it.

As in FIRST, rules from past years do not necessarily apply this year. However, last year they notified us two months after the application was due. They sent out a list to all applicants with all of the accepted names on it. However, those of us in the Ames program never got this e-mail, and I had to contact Dave Rosage to get it. In any case, I think it's safe to expect to hear something (either by e-mail or here) around mid-March. Also, to anyone interested in the percentage who get in, that same e-mail last year noted that they "received about 1000 completed applications (3000 accounts created) for about 200 positions".
