This is talking about the list you get from the "new posts" link on the menu bar, rather than the highlighting of unread posts on the main portal page.

Sometimes when I refresh the portal page threads I literally just read come up as unread, maybe people editing their posts are the root of all this chaos?

EDIT
I tested my idea out that editing the post marks the portal as new, so that might be it. Now if there was a way to see what post was edited (without an invasion of privacy, or other touchy thing) Maybe a way to signify a major (adding something like this) vs minor (spelling) edit?

I remember there was a debate about this a year or two ago. It seems time has not changed anything, and I'm still resistant to change, because it looks quite weird to me. :p

Go into User CP, Then Edit Options. The last one is:
Quote:

Page Width
How wide do you want the page to be? (980px is suggested)
The 100% option works fine for me.

Kind of looks weird on some pages, but finally lets me take advantage of my whole screen width. :D

I'm having the same problem. Threads that I read are not being marked as read. The only way I can get them marked is to use "Mark Forums Read" link. I've cleared my cache and cookies.

When I'm in CD-Media and try to click on "Advanced Search," instead of getting the advanced search page I'm sent back to the CD-Media main page.

The option is available under additional options for sending a PM. When it comes to other people sending you them, it's up to them to check the box to request a read receipt.

Clicking on the advertisement banners floating at the top of the forum pages no longer takes you directly to the manufacturer but instead links you to the ChiefDelphi Advertisers page. It would be nice to be able to simply click on the advertisements to take yourself straight to their webpage to view their products.

Sorry if I'm not the first who posted this... but its because of my problem.

My settings are so that it displays 100 posts per thread... and i don't seem to get past a certain length. For instance, on this thread, i can only view up to 56, and on the game hints, i can only see to 64.

I'm using FireFox 2.0 if that helps...

I wasn't able to replicate this issue in Firefox 1.5, but when I changed the option in my UserCP, the site started displaying in a fixed width again.

Now that I've changed it back to what it was before (the forum default), the site remains at a fixed width.

The PM Reciepts .. I'll have to see what I did.. I can't remember.
edit: on the options page, there is a section to choose "When do you want to request a read reciept?" .. is this the functionality you're looking for? Whether or not to check that box by default when sending a PM? It originally wasn't checking this option when composing a PM. It should be now.

Hrm. Check the last setting in the options page, and make sure its at 100% and not 980px. I changed my # of posts displayed from 40 to 50 to 100 to 50 to 40 and it never changed to/from 100% in any case.

The Portal will be fixed either Thursday night or Saturday morning/afternoon. I'll let you know when I'm done, and then you can tell me whats wrong with it.

Just change it to 10 or 20 posts a page instead, at least for the time being, something is goofy, but this is the type of thing that if we ignore it, it goes away :p

It's either the old way or this way -- there won't be a per-user setting.

This way .. "uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. The forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read."

Would it make it easier if there were a button right on the portal that marked them read (save a click?). I could add that when I add in the proper handling of this new method of read vs unread. I will be adding in that bold 'These posts are not new, but still contain unread ...' line on the portal, too.

I'm not fond of having posts that I have purposely choosen not read to keep showing up as unread posts. I've always liked seeing only the new posts since my last login feature.

So any method of then marking all posts read without having to visit every forum and mark it read, or have to select the last post from the selection list would be okay if your not going to revert back to the old method.

Better still would be a user setting to automatically mark all posts read at logoff.

Once you've read all you want to, you can just goto the top bar under quick links and hit "Mark Forums Read". This will mark everything read and reset your list until the next time you visit.

Hmm .. works for me -- check your spam/trash folder .. it may have been interpreted as spam. Also add 'noreply@chiefdelphi.com' to your addressbook/contacts/whitelist/etc. That is who the messages will be coming from.

One thing I found when I got a PM: There's a link to spotlight the PM (in about the same place as it is on a post). When you click it, it says an invalid thread was specified...which makes sense, since it wasn't a post in the first place.

The "Increase Size"/"Decrease Size" links are gone from the reply page. (The ones that used to make it taller.) Since this can be changed, could it also become a per-user setting, applied by default to every reply?

Is it also possible to widen the reply window to fill the width of the page? It's always annoying typing in a box 1/12 the size of the screen.

Tristan,

Those features are still there, although they are no longer text links. To increase the size of the post box, click on the button at the top right area of the post box. To decrease the size, click on the button.

The portal should be following the same 'read/unread' scheme as the forum listings and search page(s) now.

I haven't added a 'mark all read' button on the portal yet.
I haven't added the PM reply and given/received things to the reputation area yet, either.

These two things will happen tomorrow, most likely.

Brandon, i don't know if i have been blind for the past week or if it was just added in. Though the grey box on the portal that says "you last visited here at xx:xx on yy/yy/yyyy" which is at the post break from when you visted last is a great thing. Let's us see the "true" new posts since the last visit. Two thumbs up for that.

Not easily, so for now there's an extra click. I have to mimic what the real function does (or request a Hook to be put into the code).

A lot of the post is there ..view source and see if you're seeing it all. If not, then it's a browser issue and I can't do much about that. I'm using FireFox 2.0 and only can see a small bit of it, even though there is more in the html source.

Hmmm anyone else having issues with the time being off? I've set my time to Eastern (GMT -5), yet at the bottom of each page it says "All times are GMT -4. It seems this only happens with EST ... when I set the time to CST (GMT -6) it works fine.

Al, you and I are of an age that can recall writing before spell check.

I think Brandon has mentioned earlier that the upgrade eliminated spell check; something to do with it being a feature of certain popular browsers.

When I post my signature appears normally (see post #101).
When I edit my post the "Attending events" at the bottom gets cut off.

Check the settings of your browser, as this sounds like a browser issue. If you're using Firefox, go to View > Text Size > Normal and that should bring your text size back to normal. Or you can just hit [Ctrl]+[+] or [Ctrl]+[-] to adjust the font size manually. ;)

It might just be me, but there are still problems with CD-Events. Some of the events never seem to "load". The issue seems to only apply to certain events, including 2 of the 3 I plan to attend.

I know there was some discussion of this before and it wasn't working at all for a while. It looks like it got partly fixed so I figure these events maybe just didn't get whatever the fix was applied. If it makes any difference I'm running IE 6 on XP

The list pf non-working events at the moment seems to be:
Philadelphia Regional
West Michigan Regional
Israel Regional
San Diego Regional
Chesapeake Regional
San Jose Regional
Detroit Regional
Greater Kansas City Regional
Bayou Regional
Great Lakes Regional
Los Angeles Regional
New Jersey Regional
Manchester Kickoff

Brandon's life got in the way of fixing that.
You can bypass the problem with those 13 events using a browser other than IE (or applying to the petek registration service).

You can bypass the problem with those 13 events using a browser other than IE (or applying to the petek registration service).

Thanks, I got it taken care of. Hopefully it will be fixed for real sometime soon. But if there is such an easy workaround there are probably more pressing issues.

Could be noting... But when you click the "Spotlight Post" button. I keep getting a message that says, "post you are spotlighting already has spotlights. Please check the spotlight list to make sure your quote hasn't been suggested already. Thanks." I'm pretty sure it is a bug, because after it saying it was already suggested (on about 3 different quotes.) I tried it on some obscure quote and got the same message.

I noticed today there is a problem with CD media and newly uploaded photos. When I come on to CD typically I want to check the new photos so I click the top one that shows up on the forums and it takes me to cd media. The issues comes in when i notice that there is a photo before and after in the "previous" and "next" preview boxes. It seems to me that the system just puts them out of order in some cases, it could be the portal or cd media, either way I thought I should let you know.

I get the same thing. But I have noticed that it still seems to submit the spotlight quote if you just click the "submit" button anyway, even though it looks like it is just flagging the error.

Not on the list yet. Not for Sam, anyways. I wonder if you are using the same browser he is.

It seems we've been getting a bit of spam in the forums lately. Is there a way to cause users with fewer than n posts to have to pass a Captcha test before the post goes through? (Actually, I'm not sure if those were real people behind the spam, this time...in that case the Captcha wouldn't really help.)

Also, the one post per 47 seconds appears to apply equally to making posts and reporting bad posts—I guess those go to a hidden forum somewhere, but it is a (small) annoyance to have to wait 47 s to reply with "reported" after you make the report. Or, is it possible to add a checkbox option to the report-a-post page to create a response to the OP with the text "reported"?

I realize that some of this stuff constitutes a pretty diminished return, for the amount of work it entails, so if it doesn't appear, I won't be that disappointed.

If you really want to see a ton of spam, just look at the FIRST Forums. In the past 24 hours there has been no less than 18 threads with the same spam. With the Kickoff only a day and a half away, I sure hope all the moderators there can keep up with all the spam (and endless Q&A posts...).

Go down to the bottom right corner and jump to a month.

It only allows you to choose up through December 2006. I can't pull up 2007 as a choice.

It will show that error if you're spotlighting a post that has one already spotlighted .. so you can see that you aren't duplicating anything.

It should be smarter. One day ..

Yep, should be fixed now. I was looking on the FIRST calendar, not the birthdays.

And, as a side note .. the birthdays on the front forum page will only show the birthdays of people who are currently active on the forums.

I just tried to submit the "It should be smarter. One day ..", but I got the same message. Then I tried a post that had been submitted only a few minutes before, and got the same thing.

I kind of like it, rather like a game with the spotlight and at the same time, makes me think twice about it.

There is something wrong with the vote percentages in this thread. The current vote tabulation is 3 in favor (21.43%) and 13 against (92.86%) with 14 votes recorded.

I haven't noticed this on any of the other votes.

Look at the number of people that voted.

25 people voted total, 24 yes, and 3 no. which means that 2 people voted both options which than makes it true because 3/25 = 12% and 24/25 is 96%

I just opened up my user cp after being being afk and I clicked on another link but before I saw a Negative rep and a Neutral rep on my CP but now I can not. I obviously see where my rep went down but I can not see the comments or anything. It is like someone just took away rep point randomly. I use FF so at first I thought my FF was laggy, but I opened up my IE6 and tried it and I am yet to be able to see my recent reputation comments and reasons. I'm not sure 100% what is wrong but something is glitchy.

Was that reputation near the bottom of the list? In the old VBulletin 3.0.x forums, Brandon had installed a mod into the forums to display all of your reputation, but after he upgraded the forums he has not had a chance to update this mode yet.

The reputation is not gone, just 'displaced' from the current page. ;)

I believe the issue was his post was deleted -- when that happens, the reputation goes away too (from that list .. not from your reputation score, I believe).

Do you have cookies disabled in your browser? All the user session login 'stuff' is temporarily stored in cookies in your browser. If you are browsing with cookies disabled and/or blocked, you will experience the exact same problems you describe.

If cookies are enabled in your browser, check to see that they have not been permanently blocked by Firewall/Internet Security software. :)

I'm not sure if this would be classified as an upgrade issue, but just out of curiosity, why are things bolded on the portal? Also, nothing will automatically mark as Unread again. I can't tell if there's been new activity on the thread I'm looking at, or if I've already viewed it.

Thanks Brandon!

The bolded '# replies' is discussed here. Nothing changed that would've affected things not being marked read -- I'd clear your cache and cookies and try to see if it continues to act weird.

I have to be honest, I didn't look at every post in this thread, so I apologize ahead of time if this is a duplicate.

I found a link error in the site tree (at the top). From forum if I click an item in the CD swap, it takes me to the item. Then if I click CD swap in the tree it takes me to the "Unsung FIRST Heroes" front page instead of the CD swap front page.

CD rules!

Try looking at the page with an Internet Explorer that isn't v.7. At school they have v.6, and when I check it here with the older version it does the same thing.

EDIT: The problem also shows up when using Avant, but it seems to be fixed in Opera and older versions of Firefox.

The 200px automagic cutoff still works just fine for me with Firefox 2.0. I just added ten new lines of just periods to my signature to purposely make it way over the 200px limit, and FF2 still chopped off everything after 200px as it should. (I've since changed it back.)

I assume this process uses the CSS max-height property, so any browser that does not properly support this feature, like IE6, will ignore it and display the entire signature. (This is also how I can usually tell who still uses Internet Explorer here, as they'll make long signatures that get cutoff in "real browsers". :p)

I just gave someone rep for a post, and as I was editing my text, I noticed the text box doing strange things: When the text entered is longer than fits in the box, the text will not scroll. (You CAN force it to scroll by highlighting text, by typing text, or by "mousing over" any of the controls on the form.) But if you simply use the left or right cursor key, then when the caret gets to the edge of the text box -- when the text should start scrolling -- the caret just jumps back about 16 characters.
