Re: Discovered Upgrade Issues

Maybe this has been discussed, but:
After I view (read?) a thread, its still shown as as new (bold face) in the portal.

Yeah, same here. I do see the "these threads have not been updated but contain unread posts" bar thing, and if I "mark forums read" the new post list clears out just fine. But the thing is, I never had to do this before the upgrade. The new posts list would clear out on its own, by cookies or something. I never had to "mark forums read." Is there some way we can have an option to go back to that?

I tried to give someone rep, clicked the rep icon, and in the window that popped up, I clicked positive, then decided I'd rather give neutral rep and neutral wouldn't select. I clicked it, but it kept deselecting itself, so none of the option buttons were checked.

I (and many people I've talked to) prefer this way, because if you don't have time to read everything, you can come back and the unread posts still are unread.

It's either the old way or this way -- there won't be a per-user setting.

This way .. "uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. The forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read."

Would it make it easier if there were a button right on the portal that marked them read (save a click?). I could add that when I add in the proper handling of this new method of read vs unread. I will be adding in that bold 'These posts are not new, but still contain unread ...' line on the portal, too.

Interesting. What browser were you using?

I've fixed a minor issue with the neutral box -- test it out and see if it works now.

Not so much for the saved click as the obviousness (I wouldn't have thought to look under quick links), but I could go for that.

Alternatively, what about under the Private Message line in the upper-right corner of the page? There seems to be plenty of real estate there (although some javascript "Are you sure?" box might be in order if it's that accessible).

i liked the old way too, if i had been gone for a few days i could see all activity since i last logged in and i would read the ones that i wanted to read and that was it and they would stay there for a little while to i liked that. i dont like having to mark them all read cause i cant go back to ones that i want to as easily

That space has other things in it that the normal user can't see (CD-Media, Spotlight, and other pending approvals). It also has some kind of warning about full PM box, and other things.

Here's a vote for the new system. I don't always have time to read all the way through the new posts in CD when I get on. If I got called away for more than just a few minutes, under the old way it would say, "You've been logged in, so you must have read everything. Here's a new 'last visited' time." No, I really only got to read 5 threads, and I wanted to know which other threads had new stuff.

Am I the only one who doesn't get the whole CD-saves-posts-you-haven't-read-as-new-til-forever thing? Every time I leave and come back, all the posts I haven't read are marked as read (just like it used to be). I've cleared my cache and cookies, logged out and back in, and I still don't see this.

This is talking about the list you get from the "new posts" link on the menu bar, rather than the highlighting of unread posts on the main portal page.

Sometimes when I refresh the portal page threads I literally just read come up as unread, maybe people editing their posts are the root of all this chaos?

EDIT
I tested my idea out that editing the post marks the portal as new, so that might be it. Now if there was a way to see what post was edited (without an invasion of privacy, or other touchy thing) Maybe a way to signify a major (adding something like this) vs minor (spelling) edit?

If so, will the option to have it be fullscreen be added?

I remember there was a debate about this a year or two ago. It seems time has not changed anything, and I'm still resistant to change, because it looks quite weird to me. :p

Go into User CP, Then Edit Options. The last one is:
Quote:

Page Width
How wide do you want the page to be? (980px is suggested)
The 100% option works fine for me.

Kind of looks weird on some pages, but finally lets me take advantage of my whole screen width. :D

I'm having the same problem. Threads that I read are not being marked as read. The only way I can get them marked is to use "Mark Forums Read" link. I've cleared my cache and cookies.
