Discovered Upgrade Issues

I just did a major upgrade (skipped a lot of versions, had to re-write a lot).

Things may be missing, broken, or work differently. Some of them shouldn't work differently. If you see something not working like it used to, let me know and I'll fix it .. or tell you why it works that way.

Known Issues:
1) Spell check is gone. It may come back. Then again .. newer browsers / operating systems have spell check built in, so it may not come back.

2) the 'new posts' menu up top -- the subscribed forums searches aren't implemented yet.

3) The UFH and WFA images that show up by peoples avatar aren't working yet.

4) The list of reputation you've given is missing -- it will return.

Let me know if you find any others.

Is there a reason the page is fixed width?

If so, will the option to have it be fullscreen be added?

I remember there was a debate about this a year or two ago. It seems time has not changed anything, and I'm still resistant to change, because it looks quite weird to me. :p

Option exists just isn't being taken into account -- it's just a bug. I'll fix.

Before I signed on, the thread display mode defaulted to Threaded Mode. I think outside visitors may not be familiar with that and won't realize how to read the thread...one of the other modes would be better for default.

Another thing I've noticed is missing: Rookie years.

(And I still don't see WAIs.) Now I just see it for everyone but me!

And the events listing below the signature aren't showing up for me

There were major updates to the way vBulletin keeps track of what posts you've seen or not.

Before -- you had 15 minutes of inactivity and then it figured you read them all.

Now -- you have to read them all (or mark them read) before they'll fall off the 'new posts' lists. I think it is great because during the season, I can come on .. read 2-3 posts .. come back 3 hours later .. and not miss 400 threads.

The first time you come to this new version, it may look weird. Once you view all posts or a day or two goes by, it should all start to look good again.

They'll return--it was earlier in the thread.

Two more things I'm noticing:

1) On rep clicks I've received, some of the thread names are truncated while others aren't.

2) Not so much a bug as a feature, but is there a way to sort of enable the way threads used to show in new post searches, where recently-read threads would stay in the list?

3) I tried to quote Madison's post in mine, and clicked the quote button that turned orange. I don't see the quote.

4) Maybe I'm blind, but I can't seem to find the "Shush forums, I really did read those 256 threads so take them off my new posts" button.

Its for quoteig multiple posts like I did in reply to M.Krass about her comment about the reputation. If you click multiple of them and then click Post Reply at the bottom it will quote all posts. It works the same way with just one.

they should .. and if not, you can go to 'new posts' menu and go to the past 24 hours lists ..

as michelle said .. you can quote multiple posts now. click the ' " ' icons, then hit 'quote' on one of em, i think. i havent quite mastered that new feature yet, either. ;)

---

I think there is something wrong with the birthdays, because there was more than 3 this morning and now it is only displaying 3 but when you click the birthday cake next to where it lists them, you can view all of them.

About the multi-quote when you click the quote buttons, it will arrange the quotes in the order that you click them, not in chronological order. Just thought I'd explain that before someone asked.

Try checking your browsers setting for cache. Also, there is an edit button on each of your posts (that is there for about a 24 hours after the post is created) which may come in handy, and help control the amount of posts on Chief Delphi.

Ah yes -- I'll have to see how easy that is to write a plugin to accomplish it.

Weird. 15 minutes is the normal logout if you don't click 'Remember me' when logging in. Try clearing your cookies & cache .. see if that helps anything.

One thing that I noticed: if I'm not logged in, when I click search and type in my querry, it directs me to advanced search and makes me type in the letters and numbers in a box for verification. Not sure if this is on purpose or not.

Yeah, I'll have to see how I can detect when it's an error and not show those things. It doesn't run the data to put in that stuff until it starts composing a page.

Yeah, this is to prevent bad things from happening by automated bots. People can really kill a server by automating an attack by searching a whole bunch of times. The captcha, although not completely effective, will slow it down a bit.

That could be an "anti-spam" feature that helps to keep what little spam bots roaming CD from posting in every thread that is listed as "previous".

My computer has a wide window; I might be the only one to see it. Can anyone verify this?

Are you using 100% page width? No clue if it makes a difference, but that's what I'm using. could be that the image defaults to the native size, which would be larger than the width of the page if you're not using 100% width.

[edit] I just changed my setting to 980px and I see what you describe. Works fine at 100%.

It's way bigger to me too. I think it was like that before though...

Hmm. One way that does work is to type the text, highlight it, and then click the hyperlink icon.

When viewing a topic that has stemmed from an image that that was uploaded to CD Media: If you click on the image it doesn't bring you to the picture as it was uploaded to CD media but just the CD media main page. Or maybe its just this one picture.

I still haven't figured out how to get the new spotlighting to work. To test if it was a glitch I went back to one of the old 1999 archived posts and took a random blurb and tried to spot light it. It said its already been done and to check the list.

When viewing pictures in CD-Media the little arrow next to "new posts", "search" and "quick links" buttons disappears.

The issue was with old pre-CD-Media pictures being redirected from the old system to CD-Media. Should be fixed.

Hm. It should be working now. Try a brand spankin' new post and see if that works. Don't worry -- we can always delete it after you've tested.

I had just click on the CD media button and the page was loading and the pop up message telling me I had a private message appeared. I said I wanted to view the message in a new window. The new window came up but instead of being my private message inbox, CD Media came up. I thought maybe someone gave me CD media for my Birthday but I saw up at the top it said one unread message.

Hrm. Are you reading the threads, or are you not viewing them?

They won't go away until you either read them, or mark forums as read.

(BTW, you can mark individual forums read on their individual forum listing page, under 'Forum Tools')

Yeah, this is to prevent bad things from happening by automated bots. People can really kill a server by automating an attack by searching a whole bunch of times. The captcha, although not completely effective, will slow it down a bit.

That would be fine and dandy (not really), but the entering of the 6 digits/characters does not even work.

Search-pwnd.. :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one with the problem.

Also, searching CD-Media still returns doubles of the same pictures many times. What's up with that?
I know that was an issue before the upgrade btw.

Al, scroll through the pages. You should see a huge banner saying "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts."

They still show up when u log in, and don't dissapear like before.
idk if I like that yet.

Also, is there an override feature to disable MultiQuote?
(Hopefully it will disable if I log out and then back in)

I hit the button to do it.. not knowing how it works..and now everytime I go to do a regular quote on this thread, it brings up the one I hit multiquote on.. (one of Brandon's) as well as the normal quote. (Al's in this case).
And I have nooooo idea what page that is on to go back and turn it off.

I can see it being a cool feature. no doubt, but it just needs an override.
Edit: It cancels out and goes back to normal when you log out of CD and back in.. but who wants to do that?!?!? lol

Works for me. It's case sensitive -- hit 'refresh image' if you can't read the one you're given.

The 'mark as read' will make them disappear.

This feature gives you the ability to quote anything on the site -- different threads, posts, etc. There probably is a way to clear them out ... I'm not sure, exactly. It's not required, however, if you want to just quote one thing, and once you do reply, it should clear out. So worst case, reply .. clear out the unwanted multi-quotes, and then type your reply.

I tried searching today while I was not logged in from the drop down box, and it didn't give me the option to do the image thing (not that it would fit in there..), but once I searched it brought me to the advanced page where I had to enter it. Is the image entering really necessary? It sort of makes finding information quickly a little more difficult. (We're not so posted to use forums in school, so it's got to be an on and off real quick thing)

Maybe this has been discussed, but:
After I view (read?) a thread, its still shown as as new (bold face) in the portal.

Yeah, same here. I do see the "these threads have not been updated but contain unread posts" bar thing, and if I "mark forums read" the new post list clears out just fine. But the thing is, I never had to do this before the upgrade. The new posts list would clear out on its own, by cookies or something. I never had to "mark forums read." Is there some way we can have an option to go back to that?

I tried to give someone rep, clicked the rep icon, and in the window that popped up, I clicked positive, then decided I'd rather give neutral rep and neutral wouldn't select. I clicked it, but it kept deselecting itself, so none of the option buttons were checked.

I (and many people I've talked to) prefer this way, because if you don't have time to read everything, you can come back and the unread posts still are unread.

It's either the old way or this way -- there won't be a per-user setting.

This way .. "uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. The forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read."

Would it make it easier if there were a button right on the portal that marked them read (save a click?). I could add that when I add in the proper handling of this new method of read vs unread. I will be adding in that bold 'These posts are not new, but still contain unread ...' line on the portal, too.

Interesting. What browser were you using?

I've fixed a minor issue with the neutral box -- test it out and see if it works now.

Not so much for the saved click as the obviousness (I wouldn't have thought to look under quick links), but I could go for that.

Alternatively, what about under the Private Message line in the upper-right corner of the page? There seems to be plenty of real estate there (although some javascript "Are you sure?" box might be in order if it's that accessible).

i liked the old way too, if i had been gone for a few days i could see all activity since i last logged in and i would read the ones that i wanted to read and that was it and they would stay there for a little while to i liked that. i dont like having to mark them all read cause i cant go back to ones that i want to as easily

That space has other things in it that the normal user can't see (CD-Media, Spotlight, and other pending approvals). It also has some kind of warning about full PM box, and other things.

Here's a vote for the new system. I don't always have time to read all the way through the new posts in CD when I get on. If I got called away for more than just a few minutes, under the old way it would say, "You've been logged in, so you must have read everything. Here's a new 'last visited' time." No, I really only got to read 5 threads, and I wanted to know which other threads had new stuff.

Am I the only one who doesn't get the whole CD-saves-posts-you-haven't-read-as-new-til-forever thing? Every time I leave and come back, all the posts I haven't read are marked as read (just like it used to be). I've cleared my cache and cookies, logged out and back in, and I still don't see this.
