Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Well, no one else has started a thread on us so far, so I thought I would go ahead.
Team 492 will be returning hoping to fare a bit better then we did last time, at least competition-wise. I would like to welcome our WAY out of town guests, team 272 comin' all the way over from PA! Now thats a good commute. I would also like to welcome back all the returning teams, teams that are making there way to the PACNW for the first time (I think we got a few "new" veteran Cali teams, including team 192,) but most of all I would like to welcome the truly new teams who are just this year experiencing their first year of FIRST. The PACNW is not only known for being competitive but is even better known for being a great bunch of teams who are just plain nice to one another, personally I think we got the best combo possible. So, this year, lets live up to our legend and have the best event so far. On a slightly more downtrodden note, FIRST WEEK AGAIN?!? Come on, who has it out for us in FIRST headquarters... we know your in there... |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
I was very pleased with the overall experience at PNW last year. We're going again, and I guess we'll see you there!
I look forward to seeing some of the teams from PNW from last time. I remember your bot; it was a pretty sweet piece of kit all right. Ari. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Last year was an awesome competition at PNW, and I very much look forward to it again this year! see you all there!

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Hey everyone,
I'm one of the team leaders for our brand new first robotics team:) we'll be making our way all the way from Surrey, BC. It's our first year competing in first, but a number of the members of our team have experience competing in a somewhat similar but WAYYYY smaller competition called Skills Canada. This is going to be a blast! |

As I am sure you will find, the people here are more then willing to help you work through any issues you may be having, so feel free to ask. I look forward to meeting your team at the PACNW. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Yes, team 272 Cyber-Crusader Robotics will "Go west young person, go west!". This is our tenth year anniversary and we are very excited about coming to a new competition. Please drop by to say hello. Look for the old guy with green hair. Can't wait, getting lots of sleep now because once the season starts I know we will get very little.

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Team 1839 will be returning, this is our second year in first and we are exited to return to portland.

Portland is not only a great regional, but a great city. In fact we've had so much fun at PNW the last couple years that this summer my wife and I took our summer holidays down in Oregon (and scored a few of the last 1/2 price VEX kits at Radio Shack... and tax free too!) Looking forward to getting together with you guys during build. Your presence now makes BC the #2 FIRST province in Canada. Have fun this weekend and we'll be in touch, Jason |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
1087 will be there as always. Definitely going to improve from last year's uhh... mishaps.
Also, the gorilla will be making another (possibly his final) appearance ever. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
My favorite thread -- all my pals from the last two years. I'll probably be there on Saturday, but I'll be teamless. Maybe I'll contact the PNW committee about volunteering.
Good luck to everyone! |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
957 will be there again
|
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Hey, team 1983 wil also be there. This is our first year in FIRST and none of us have any past experience in FIRST, but many have taken robotics classes. We are all extremely excited to be competing and have a coach who has a lot of previous experience in FIRST. Furthermore, I'd like to thank team 492 for hosting the kickoff last saturday; it was fun and i met some of the team members including the president. You all were very helpful and I hope to see you guys down in Portland.

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Also, Team 1891 will be there unless we have been frozen to the ground. It was 9 degrees yesterday and the day before that :ahh:
|
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Team 604 would like to be there but due to a shortage of budget, we won't be going. Maybe next year.

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Team 753 will be showing up again (and hopefully winning/placing high again)
This is our favorite regional because of the friendly atmosphere and great sportsmanship Can't wait! |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Madera will be attending Portland for the first time. We finished 8th in the Archimedes division this year and plan on being really competitive again. Look for the blue hair.
|
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
997 will be comming back to portland for another year of fun and friendship!!!
Portland is always a blast and it's so nice to see a bunch of new faces this year, and of course all the old returning ones! |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
114 is definitely coming back to PNW this year. Check the list again and we're on it. I loved the laid back and friendly atmosphere of the regional last year and I can't wait for another great time up north. Also, lowest team number at the regional, for whatever thats worth :p

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Anyone who is going to Portland Please view this thread
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...light=portland This thread is an effort to get info on all teams before the competition that way we all can get a better idea on what to expect from bots without wasting a day scouting there |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Team 1425 will be there.
I'm excited. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Would anyone be willing to post rankings / strategy data after the regional is over? I'm particulary interested in how the teams that are heading over to SVR in two weeks are doing, but any info would be awesome.
Thanks, -Guy |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
I don't have exhaustive data, but things are going well here in Portland. The field has been working wonderfully all day which is a welcomed change, in and of itself.
At the end of the day, team 948 is seeded first -- they're a nice, elevator-based lifting mechanism. 488 is fourth seed, currently, and we've got a 4 - 1 - 0 record. 1540, a mecanum drive tube scoring machine, is 2nd or 3rd, sharing that space with 2122. I don't have a sense for how many penalties have been called except to say that my alliances have never been given one. Knowing the rules regarding when you can step up the controls, touch the ringers and such is important. My biggest gripe is that the match lists SUCK. I make no exaggeration when I say that 488 competes against 492 during every. single. match. Other teams similarly compete against one team every time they're up. There're 54 teams at this event, so there's no reason why things could not have been mixed up a little bit more. Tomorrow ought to be exciting. Congratulations to Eric Stokely, winner of the Regional Woodie Flowers Award. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
There is another thread in here about the match list issue - apperantly the selection algorithm pitches teams with similar numbers against each other, without much shuffling.
Thanks for the data, and I can't wait to see you (and everyone else) at SVR. -Guy |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
I think because of the matching algorithm the alliance selections will be a lot more interesting this year. A team can be ranked very high if it played an easy team every single match. A good scouting team will be valuable.
So far the matches have mostly been well played (I'm on drive team so I don't get to watch many matches). I am a little surprised by the number of bots who have a hard time picking up rings. Overall at this point in the game a strong ramp bot is about all that a team needs to win as very few games go over 30 or 60 points from the rack. That might change later with a couple of good scoring bots on the same team in finals. Penalties have been somewhat nonexistent. Touching controls/throwing rings early has been a big one (and those penalties decided some matches). There was the occasional going into the other teams home zone at the end of the match. Also a few times a ramp would fold out outside of their home zone and exceed 72" by 72". No penalties in any of my matches. Not many penalties for pushing or things like that. I think the highest scoring match was 128-0 and the highest combined score was 106 to 76 or something like that. The highest score might have changed later in the day. One of the more interesting things that I have noticed is that all of the top robots are either scoring robots or ramp robots. There is not any really strong robot that has both a ramp and an arm. That really surprised me considering the number of teams with both a ramp and an arm. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Quote:
(The top of the robot is 13" off the ground. We had planned to have a ramp on one side and a "table" on the other side, both drop-down, so we'd be able to hold two robots at 13", but we ended up leaving off the table for weight reasons; instead, we just riveted on a couple of plates to keep robots from rolling off the other side after climbing the ramp. So we can only score 30 bonus points, not 60. We could in theory have a robot climb onto our back and then carry them up another single-robot ramp... at least, our drive team claims that the drive is strong enough for that... but I have a hard time imagining that happening in a real match!) |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
I think 488 is going to win this one.. especially if they end up with a decent scorer.

according to First's website they are on the 2nd set of QF matches...
updated at the end of every match!!! http://www2.usfirst.org/2007comp/eve...chresults.html |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
I just saw match Semi 1-2 vanish tied 32-32, and then reappear like this:
3:26 PM Semi 1-2 [1778 948 1540] [488 1595 1318] 32-0 What happened? Penalty? Tie-breaker? |

The series went to four matches before we lost. 948, 1540 and 1778 lost in the finals to 997, 272, and 1294. Congratulations, everyone. |

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
In match 2 of the finals I was on the losing side (1540, 1778, 948). We were just playing defense and trying to stop the other teams ramp. 1087 flipped over trying to get up a ramp. I thought that we had the match easily. Then somehow they started going up again. In some impossible feat they righted themselves. After the regional talking with my teammates we all agreed that if you can pull that move off you deserve to win. Great job 1087.

Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
Gotta tell you what a roller coaster ride we had at PACNW. Our bot was working great most of the time because of a dedicated pit crew of students and mentors. Our drive team big Mike, human Mike, Crash and the Ice Man did a great job. These folks are all backed up by our scouts & SMEs. This really is a team effort. But all this gets you so far. We had great alliances throughout the prelims. Finally we were very fortunate, delighted, happy, euphoric (ok out of terms for this) to be picked up by 997. A great bunch of passionate robo folks. At LC we often discuss how the second pick is the toughest. What a great pick 1087 turned out to be. The competition was tough but great fun and no one got en eye poked out! So it all good.
I tried to thank everyone I could, if I missed anyone please accept my sincere thanks. After a red eye flight, we are back home safe and sound, but will soon not forget all the great folks we met at PACNW. Thanks Frank Larkin Lansdale Catholic Cyber Crusaders Team #272. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
There is a Flickr Group containing many photos taken from this regional. If you feel like sharing yours create a Flickr account and add your photos to the group. Tag them with "team XXXX" for each robot/team shown and everyone will get to see all the photos.
http://flickr.com/groups/2007frc_pnw/ Look for the team links on the group page to see all the photos of your team. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
does anyone have any of the regional on tape or webcasted anywhere
|
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
I think that our team has a few of our matches on our team website. That actually won the best website award. I think the thing that was the coolest about it is that a freshman was in charge of the design of the it. Anyways, if you would like to go to
www.bullbots.org This is team 1891's website a.k.a. the "Bullbots" I hope this answers your question. |
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
thanks. does anyone else have any of the matches
|
Re: Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW
http://www.soap.circuitrunners.com/2007/movies/or/
is a video archive of all of the matches held in Portland last year. You may want to grab the matches your teams were in before this gets taken down for next year. Does anyone know of a similar video resource for the 2006 year in portland? |
