Re: 2007 Indiana Robotics Invitational

I'm devastated that there will be no mentor round. I wanted to play. OK, being more serious, I understand eliminating the mentor round for the sake of better competition, with teams using their "regular," and presumably best drivers for all matches.

I'm not too crazy about the 4-team alliances without the requirement that all teams play at least one match in each round. If I'm reading this correctly, there will be the possibility be of an official "winner" that doesn't play a single match in the elimination rounds. Am I correctly interpreting this?

Anyway, thanks for all the work putting together a great event. See you in July.

That's the way I read it.

Spoiler for Billfred's commentary:
Mayhem played the same way last year, to good results. I don't think any smart alliance captain would keep a team shelved for the entire tournament--I think you'll see a specialist slot tend to open up, one team who excels at a certain thing (say, controlling spoilers on the rack) and gets played selectively (say, against a spoiler-happy alliance).

Yes. Weighing the pros and cons of each scenario, we have decided that it is better to have no requirement to play all teams on the alliance.

I was wondering, is there any planned modification to the "random" match scheduling system? Or will it be run the same way as it was at The Championship.

This is being worked on. I believe that FIRST is working with 4FX to accomodate the need for more randomness and other flexible features in the scoring system. These changes are targeted for not only IRI, but other events as well.

....... tubes contacting robots in the home zone and affecting "supported" robots will be deflated or removed in order to determine if robots are truly supported

YES!! Clear rules that are equitable for all and don't unfairly penalize teams for minor misfortune. Thank you for planning to clarify what consitutes ramming, pinning and tipping.

(Keeps fingers crossed in hopes of receiving an invite!)

Props to the IRI planning committee for getting through this very quickly, it really helps teams get their details set.

I cannot believe this event will have 72 teams, amazing.
