I'll have to check with the other coaches, but I think Team 95 is planning on going to Palmetto again this year. We also go to Manchester. We've gone twice, and two alliance Silvers. Palmetto has good vibes.

As always? I remember 2004 and 2005--and the only SOAP those years was in the bathrooms. ;)

1618 will be in full effect at Palmetto this year. This is gonna be a good year.

Actually, Team 108 will not be there. Sorry for any confusion, but according to FIRST we are attending 6 regionals, because at one time or another since registration opened, we were attending each of those. However, we are offically attending UCF, Las Vegas, and the Championship. Good Luck to everyone at Palmetto, it was a great regional last year, I enjoyed it a ton.

Metal In Motion - Team 343 will be there. We look forward to seeing a lot of old friends and making new ones. It will be exciting to have the new teams with the Palmetto group this year. To those of you who are not going to be able to make it this year, we will "pencil you in" to attend two times next year. You will be sorely missed.
Good luck to all teams this year. May you have an outstanding season.

This is the first year 1390 will be in Palmetto. As soon as I get out of class on thursday at 11:15 I am making my way north. The drive is about 6 hours (depending on how I drive...ahem.) I've always heard from other Florida teams that its a fun competition, and I look forward to attending.

Re: Palmetto Regional

Sadly S.P.A.M will not be able to go this year. UTC has cut our funding in half for 2007, and has cut it completely in future years. We had to make the tough choice of attending 1 regional and Nat's in 2007, so we'd have the $$ for at least one regional next year. The loss of UTC represents 1/2 our yearly budget which supports FRC, FVC and Lego League teams. We are down but not out!

We will miss this competition dearly. It is one of my favorites...all night bus ride not-with-standing :p Have a great time and a great regional!

Yep.

The State Museum is not too terribly far from the Colonial Center, but far enough to justify moving your car.

Speaking of cars and such, keep in mind that the parking at the Colonial Center is also a very popular commuter lot for USC students, one that is not generally closed down for Palmetto. (Well, it hasn't been closed the past three years.)

I've heard talk of special parking for buses, but I can't confirm that. But if you're coming in cars, come early. By 8:00 AM on a regular class day, things are already a little cozy down there. If you move the car for lunch, expect to take some time to find a new spot!

Also, I'll note that there are food options out there--if you know where you're going. The Russell House University Union has a plethora of quick-service food at tolerable prices (Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Chick-Fil-A, Einstein Bros. Bagels, etc.), and is only about a half-mile from the Colonial Center. You can get there one of two ways: take the Express shuttle (RHUU is only a little bit further along Greene--you can see it from the corner) or walk it. There's a pedestrian underpass below Assembly Street between the Carolina Coliseum and the Law School that will spare you most of the uphill hike, plus the fun of playing human Frogger on Assembly Street. I wouldn't recommend going that path alone at three in the morning, but it's fine during the day.

Alternatively, if the match algorithm gods have smiled upon you and you have more time, I wholeheartedly recommend Gibbes Court at the bottom of Capstone House. This one will all but require a bus--for this one, take the Red shuttle to Capstone at Barnwell--this is a long trip, but it also gives you a nice view of campus. Just be sure to get back on the road before 1:00, as the route goes from two buses to one at that point.

Or, if you're looking for off-campus grub, many students find themselves drawn to Beezer's at 919-B Sumter Street--it's literally across the street from where the Red shuttle stops at on the Horseshoe. They do subs like nobody's business, and eating there on five bucks is entirely possible. Grab a sub, spread out on the Horseshoe for a bit, and hop the Express back down to the Coliseum stop (or walk back, if you want to work off the sandwich).

Hey, UIS does something besides turn nearly every classroom on campus into a "smart" classroom? Awesome. ;)

By the way, if anybody's reading this and thinking "Man, our freshman totally swiss cheesed our flag holder--what are we going to do for Palmetto?!", 1618's got you covered. We'll have a decent supply of 1/2" PVC pipe and end caps in our pit--just ask and we'll get you on your way to handling R15.

The trips not that bad for us, ~3-3/4 hrs according to Google. We leave Wednesday night and will probably be arriving in Columbia around tenish, and ready for a competition where we finally don't have any work we HAVE to do to on Thursday to make the robot competition ready, we don't even have to lose weight! (We still plan on adding a few things though, like an autonomous selector pot and two more air tanks) That leaves all that time for writing 15 user selectable autonomous modes. (Up from the one monster autonomous mode that we had at VCU, which we never activated to to sensor & feedback problems)

Ah yes, the Embassy Suites. Nice digs, as I recall. (It's been a few years--family would often stay there when they came to town.)

By the way, for anyone coming from Embassy Suites (or anywhere else that involves I-126), do yourself a favor and ignore Google Maps once you get on I-126. Google Maps will take you to Elmwood Ave., then Assembly Street, then Greene St--this involves a further distance on a street that isn't world-renowned for its stoplight-friendliness.

Here's what you do from I-126:

When I-126 ends, you're presented with two options: Elmwood Ave. and Huger St. (Spare yourself the embarrassment for when you talk to locals about it--it's pronounced U-G, not hugger or huge-er or anything else.) Take Huger St. This will take you down a ways, past the BellSouth at&t building, and through only two or three stop lights with any real chance of slowing you down. On your left, shortly after passing Gervais St., you'll soon see a ginormous flag pole, currently flying a South Carolina flag with the colors inverted. About a block and a half later, also on the left, you'll see Todd & Moore, which has a white sign and green script lettering. This is Devine St.--make a left, but look before you turn! Devine St. takes you right to the Coliseum parking lots*, but you go over a rather busy railroad crossing to get there. A train here will delay you quite a bit, so look before making the turn. If there's a train, go one block further to Blossom St., then go left here. Blossom has an overpass that'll let you get past the train, then make a left turn to reach the Coliseum lots.

*The Carolina Coliseum was the home of the Gamecocks until 2002, when the Colonial Center opened as the Carolina Center. The Coliseum still stands, hosting smaller events, some classroom space, and the city's minor-league hockey team. The Coliseum is all of about two blocks away from the Colonial Center, and shares parking with it and the Koger Center for the Arts across the street, but the parking area and shuttle stop are still dubbed the Coliseum by seniority (and a bit of proximity, since it completely bounds the lots on one side, where the Koger Center and Colonial Center are on corners of the lots).

Hey, that's not far from here at all! (Well, assuming you mean the one on Gervais St.)

So I found out today that 1875 (Autonomato Autonomatons) and 1368 are official--for some reason, they were jumping on and off of the rosters I saw until today. (And since I've seen both crates on the floor in the Colonial Center, I imagine that they're quite official now.)

By the way, the pit layout appeared to be a little jumbled. Things seemed to loosely follow how they went in Chesapeake, with rows of similarly-numbered teams mixed up en masse, but don't quote me on that.

Also, you'll have to take some time out to look around the concourse--this afternoon, I saw Donn Griffith setting up FLL challenge sets for every single year that South Carolina's been involved--that's every field going back to Volcanic Panic (and two from Nano Quest)! There'll also be FVC demos, and quite a bit more that I'm just not thinking about right now.

This, in a word, is going to be awesome.

Exactly, shouldn't it have stayed 19-16?

The refs just made another ruling after the score was put up at Palmetto again...they need to work on that, and reading the rules.

Aidan Browne (Lead/Chief/Head Referee of all the regionals) is at the event along with a very experience ref crew so I'd imagine whatever was change was probably the correct call, and needed to be made. Terrell, Chris, and the rest of them have a lot of experience and have definitely read the rules. :)

Not to take a shot at Aidan, gotta love him, he did make an incorrect call at the UTC Preship Scrimmage, and was later corrected.

If you haven't already, come by our pit and check out our Space Shuttle robot transporter. I wish I could post a pic but I don't have a camera with me.

Several groups at our school were involved in creating this award winning cart including drafting, the wood shop, and the collision repair shop.

Congrats you guys on winning the Imagery Award.

They're doing 10 matches per team with 6 minute turnarounds (not the usual 8 as in other regionals). They also set the # matches between rounds to a low number (4). We were in matches 8, 12, & 16 and never got to our pits between matches as they also have them queuing 4-deep. It's very hectic here, but tomorrow is going to be awesome. Some great scoring and the alliance picking won't be easy.

Tune in again tomorrow. Same Bat Time - Same Bat Channel. :D

Good luck Mannie & Rick. We are pulling for 832 & 1746 on the webcast. Dave

Thanks Dave!

Are you recording any of the webcast?

Jeremy and Team SOUP are here supporting us too!

Rick, No I am not. I guess I am not positive how to do it. The web cast Kbps varies from 180's - 310's so not ideal. I assume the video's will be up on Soap but I am not sure. Watched several of your matches yesterday. Stay out of that opponents home zone at the end of match though. :) Dave

Thanks Dave and also to Santosh and other CircuitRunners who have been IM-ing us all weekend. We love the support that we're getting from all of the Georgia (and other Peachtree) teams.

Two more matches today and then nail biting time for the alliance selection.

Mannie

A double flip-flop now, oye. Went from a 10 point penalty on blue, to a 10 point on red, to a tie.

Re: Palmetto Regional

In all seriousness now...if anyone is watching, I hate to moan about it...but the Head Ref didn't give one team any penalty, after they deployed their ramp in the first 5 seconds of the match (by accident) and then proceeded to use their ramp as a wedge to keep a team away from the rack. This changed the outcome of the match, because he gave two bogus penalties to the other alliance.

EDIT: They just changed the outcome of another match after posting the scores...swinging the match again.

Re: Palmetto Regional

Corey, they gave us (1626) two 10 pt penalties for being in the opposing alliance's home zone during the end game but we were on the other side of the field.

4 vs 5 is a great match-up.
The winner of that and 1 vs 8, will definitely, be the matches to watch.

Re: Palmetto Regional

1369 is really doing well scoring in autonomous, i remember at Peachtree they started scoring autonomous in quarterfinals, and made it everytime, and that really helped them win...
