Welded Aluminium?

From what I read, the arena is made from a platform of "Carpted welded aluminium".

What exactly is welded aluminium(and if you can, how can it affect the robot)?

where'd you read that?

I would assume that the game components this year are welded together rather than bolted? Welded aluminum is just that. Welded aluminum. It can be done but it's difficult because of the consistency of the aluminum at such high temperature or something like that.

As for your concerns about the effects on the robot-- What are your thoughts on this, so people can put some information out there.

The walls of the arena are constructed of welded aluminum, and the playing surface is covered with carpet.

You only need to worry about the carpet surface, the welded aluminum is not part of the playing field itself, it is only used to make the arena walls, and rack.

Do you think that the carpet is the really flat carpet that is in schools or carpet that is similar to carpet in homes.

It's a low-pile, commercial carpet. More like you find in schools than in most homes.

Just to close the loop, the carpet is either nylon or some other long-chain polymer. It's not wool.

The tricky part about welding aluminum is that it doesn't get red hot like steel, and thus is very difficult to judge when it gets molten. But it's not that difficult to weld aluminum if you have a TIG welder. Then you can just reverse the polarity of the electrode.

You can also MIG Weld Aluminium> Tig is better though.
