Re: Hawai'i Regional Announced for March 2008

*sniffle* I would LOVE to go to Hawaii for a regional. But then again, all I'd see is the arena, right? :p

Unfortunately, SC is awfully far away from HI and I don't think we could fit all our stuff on the plane!! :D

But it's good to know that regionals are expanding!

Just think, the slogan for the regional could be "Best Regional before tomorrow!"

Currently, there are four teams participating in FRC2007. They would be Waialua High School (359), McKinley High School (368), Waiakea High School (2024), and Punahou High School (2090).

Very nice! I think I will be suggesting that regional to our team to travel to next year :yikes: . haha

But really, great job you guys! I'm very glad that you guys have a regional over there. Good Luck and hopefully I'll see you guys in a year ;)

Re: Hawai'i Regional Announced for March 2008

That sounds fun but I fear it might be expensive too if its in a city with a VERY popular tourist attraction which might detract some teams from visiting. BUT it is GREAT that we will have a new regional opening up creating a possibility for more teams in Hawaii to start up.

Pavan.

With our recurring and infamous Hawaiian Theme, I'd say we'd probably be one of the first teams to want to attend. This sounds great guys! (Ironically, we were just thinking about what we'd do if there were a Hawaiian Regional this past week at our parents' meeting.)

I just found tickets for around 350 bucks from Boston...well just using this march as an example, should be similar prices...I think I have a nice spring break idea next year...well hopefully.

Congratulations guys! This is extremely exciting! My mom's ohana (family) is from Hawai'i and I would love to have them see the greatness of FIRST. I would LOVE go volunteer for this event! Keep us updated on news about this event.

TKM.368 McKinley Robotics would like to recognize and thank Dave Lavery's efforts in getting a regional in Hawai’i sponsored by NASA. His tireless dedication helped get the 1 million dollars, which will fund the regional in Hawai’i, secured and this will help the growth of FIRST in Hawai'i schools exponentially. We are grateful for the work he has put into getting the funds and hope that he would come visit us at the regional next year, as we are sure he will feel at home with his Hawaiian shirt. :)

Me and my team 25 shirt are at the ready. I'm definitely going to try to go and volunteer :D.

So then, all this needs to do is be scheduled during my spring break so I can spend the week relaxing and the weekend FIRSTing ;)

People here thought it was incredible when San Diego filled up in days. I predict that Hawaii will fill in hours. Hmmm Atlanta or Hawaii? So many hard choices.

It would be an appropriate place for the BeachBots to go and we'd finally get to play with our long time friends on 368 on their home turf.

Way to go gang

We're very excited over here on the Big Island! We still have interisland airfare/hotel/transportation but that still beats the $$$ to the Mainland. We might be able to attend two regionals for the first time or maybe even the Nationals which have been out of reach for us and our budget. It should help Mainland teams to appreciate what great lengths we have to go through to get a team across the pacific to a Mainland regional. Thank you McKinley for representing all our Hawaii teams with the Governor on Wednesday....we were with you in spirit! See you in San Jose!

No problem, Waiakea! We're just as excited as you are. By next year, the Superferry should be running and you can bring your own transportation (see if they'll sponsor you and get you here for free heh).

We're also excited to show the rest of the FIRST community that GP exists everyday here and is affectionately known as the Aloha Spirit!

We are excited as well! That means, one trip to the East Coast, one Hawaii regional, and then hopefully championships for the price of 2!

Team 25: We expect you folks to come since we're going to NJ this year.......hehehe........

Team 151 was at the Kickoff and spoke with Dean Kamen and with Governor Linda Lingle about this idea. It sounds like the door will be open to a limited number of veteran teams. We are interested in the idea.

I hope the limit isn't too low. The number of veteran teams in Hawaii, however, is relatively small so we're in the beginning stages of ramping up our recruitment efforts for new teams here.

Being a new NASA sponsored regional, I assume as like this season, that perhaps there will be 10 veteran grants and 10 rookie grants offered. We shall see!

It depends. I put this on the 1111 team forum and they are really excited about this. They are really looking into coming next year!

Re: Hawai'i Regional Announced for March 2008

OK, just to make sure that nobody gets too far ahead of themselves, we need to clarfiy a few things. The NASA sponsorship of an FRC Regional Competition in 2008 is dependent upon a sufficient number of FRC teams (typically 12) being established in Hawaii in time for the FRC season, and upon FIRST approval and support for the event. So before the Hawaiian regional is a "done deal" the existing teams have some homework to do (where have we heard that before?). Eight more teams have to be created before next year. So each of the four existing teams have some recruiting to do! Use this season as your opportunity to show off your team, your robot, and FIRST. Let all the other schools know what you are doing, invite their students over to see what is going on, and start marketing yourselves.

of course i would go to a regional here! it would be a blast to have one. where would we put one? some regoinals are as big as the islands ( :P )

Re: Hawai'i Regional Announced for March 2008

While going to Hawaii for a regional in March would be nicer from one in Michigan simply because of the climate;) . I think it would be rather expensive to attend considering airfare to and from here to there and the shipping of the robot. I think that this regional will be a blast and I hope it goes well and good luck Hawaii:)

waialua359 07-02-2007 04:27

Re: Hawai'i Regional Announced for March 2008

Its costing us 670 per person round trip from Hawaii to New Jersey for our regional.
BUT Im sure teams who make the effort to come will not regret the stay here in Hawaii. This is a great excuse for teams to visit us here!:D

Dave-
whatever we can do from the NJ end is offered. the internet is a communication tool but obviously we cant open the shop from here.

This can work if the guys on the ground in the islands can get the schools together.

Re: Hawai'i Regional Announced for March 2008

i wouldn't worry about there being enough teams. i'm thinking that most of the schools that once participated in the HECO Electron Marathon may come out. Some of them already have. Also, thanks to our Governor who has raising awareness of science and technology; this program included, it shouldn't be a problem.

I would like to formally announce (and I have been told it is ok to post this) that the Hawaii Regional for 2008 is a GO!

We're definitely looking to forward to showing off our Hawaiian hospitality and fun in the sun :) next year here in Honolulu. I hope all of you out there seriously consider joining us!

I guess we will see teams 233, 254, 25, 330 and a few more heavy hitters coming next year, right?? We have a fellow school right up there, team 368, the Kika Mana team!

Re: Hawai'i Regional Announced for March 2008

without a doubt, 233 is already making plans on coming. one of our former mentors is stationed there and maybe we'll just camp out in his yard - that'w what he gets for abandoning us

Yohan 21-12-2007 03:49

Re: Hawai'i Regional Announced for March 2008

Hey everyone!

There is an opening for one more team at the Hawaii regional since, unfortunately, one of our rookies dropped out of the FIRST program. The FIRST Events page has not properly updated to reflect this change, which should be 34 Registered, 3 Pending, and 1 Open for a grand total of 38 slots.

This leaves a relatively unknown gap for one team willing to come to Hawaii to have some fun in the sun (and compete of course) at the 2008 Hawaii Regional! And it's sure to be a blast with the plethora of great teams attending!

Hope to see you there,

John P.
