3/4 to 1lb per side? How heavy IS that fiberglass? I was under the impression that it was lighter than Aluminum (well, less dense at least.) But, I guess the 1/4" wall thickness adds up pretty quickly.

I see that you've been using the same frame/drive train for the past few years now. Just how heavy does that turn out to be year after year?

Fiberglass is roughly half as dense as aluminum, so a sheet of 1/4" fiberglass is near the same weight as a sheet of 1/8" aluminum. The fiberglass works pretty good for making a very strong drive frame that will take a beating, but aluminum is more suitable for some other robot applications (like light, strong manipulator arms!). This year our team's robot will be made with both materials, as well as (possibly) some other fun structural materials.

Mmmmm... Swiss cheesed robot... Now all you need is some bread and an oven.

So you are going to possibly lose 4 lbs? Well what I would have done, just for looks and structure. I would cut it in a triangular pattern, if there was time to do that. :D

Overall Great job, you guys seem to be well on your way to finishing. A moving bot in the first week is a good thing to have.

this brings back memories of last year, except we were swiss cheesing plywood in our pit at the boston regional. if you think those holes aren't lined up, you should have seen team 1757's bot - the holes were anywhere anyone could reach with a drill!

¡viva la weight réduction!
