How far are you on your robot?

How far is your team on schedule? Ahead, behind, right on track? My team, Team 250 is right about on schedule, but are facing minor setbacks here & there. but when things start to get down to the wire in the last week, it seems that we are always behind. Is this the same with everybody else? Is your robot being built according to plan, or have you had to make major or minor changes?

Re: How far are you on your robot?

We're a little behind schedule from where we want to be but that is in comparison to the last couple of years where we completed two robots, which I think we'll still do. It's just taking a little longer.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Due to the ice storm of the century in my area (may not be hyperbole, according to some meteorologists and/or mentors living here for decades), we lost a week of build season. However, everything else is going completely smoothly and are actually catching back up to schedule. There's hope for us yet!

were slightly behind because our machinist decided to screw up his hand

Our robot almost looks like a sailboat.

Which is to say, we're making fair progress.

We are far behind schedule.. like every year. But we always manage to finish right on the shipping day

there's a schedule? :)
im a College Student on the team now, and i go back on Fridays and Saturdays and help out my team, 1568. As of right now...i'd say we are getting along, slowly, but its coming along fine.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Team 288 RoboDawgs is about 1 week behind. Some of our parts we sent out to be formed came in late. Also, this year we are building two units instead of one. We work each weekday from 4:30 to 9:00 and on Saturday when needed (like this Saturday)

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Because we have failed to set many deadlines or due dates, (which is ironic because the robot's name will be "Deadline") I have no idea where we are versus where we would like to be.

I think we should be done with the robot in about four to five weeks-wait-no, that won't be happening. At least I can say we have a chassis and bits and pieces of an arm. It'll all come together though... somehow.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

This year the team is pretty much a rookie team. Myself and all the other senior members graduated last year, and this is the most behind i have ever seen us including our rookie year.

We here on SparX are a little under a week behind schedule and about 10-20 lbs overweight...better get out that treadmill for the bot.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Compared to last year we are WAY ahead of schedule. It's a wonderful feeling. We had a driving chassis earlier this week, but the Banebots transmissions have been giving us a bit of grief (Who hasn't been getting grief from those transmissions?). So we had to fix those today.

Out of the years I've been on the team we haven't had much time for any software integration after the robot was done built. 2005 we finished the bot, stuffed it in the crate and that was it. The integration took place at our first competition. 2006 we finished the bot and attempted to got some software integration done, but the electrical box had some problems. Some victors were broken and the fact that it was a box made the matter far worse. It was a pain to get your hands in and out, let alone a screw driver to replace that victor.

So... last year was the preparation for a major step in this team. So many things went wrong and we learned so much. We changed the design process, we have a good schedule that everyone knows about, we strayed away from having an electrical box. Now it's all nice, neat and easy to see.

You really can't have a bad year. The only way you can is to come out of it and not learn anything.

grr is doing good the rookies (424) are a ahead and the vets (340) are behind
but (340) is going to work harder to get ahead

Re: How far are you on your robot?

we are merely on schedule. this is still a big acomplishment though, because this year we set aside an unprecidented 2 weeks at the end for programing/practice. the last time we even had a week of spare time was 4 years ago, so scheduling for 2 weeks of time, and looking like we will make it is pretty nice.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Like many Central and North Texas, Oklahoma teams, the Icy weather shut down school for two plus days and was a real momentum stopper. I think we may be gaining some ground that was lost but on the positive side the the programming team is very much ahead of past season's work. They are using the 2005 robot which will be of the same drive type and it has a camera mounted and being tested on a complete rack system. So some pluses and and some minuses and such is life working with teenagers:eek:

Re: How far are you on your robot?

We are behind. I just finished the bare chassis tonight, and we will spend all of tomorrow bolting on stuff (baseplate, motors, electronics, etc). We were anticipating having the bare chassis done by the beginning of the third week....leaving the 4th and 5th for the manipulators, and the 6th for programming, testing, etc. Hopefully the chassis will be done 100% by Wednesday....which means another late weekend in the shop this upcoming week...

Donut 29-01-2007 00:19

Re: How far are you on your robot?

We've got the chassis done with the stationary portion of our arm tower and the robot part of our ramps on as well. Wheels, sprockets, and transmissions are mounted along with the wood for the electronics board, and programming has working drive code as well as having proved most of the sensors we're using will work. Parts of our arm are done as well, just not assembled.

This week we want the chassis to be drivable and enough of a control board to control it; also most (or all) of our arm should be attached, and on programming I hope to finish both our automatic and manual arm control code. Of course we'll see how mcuh our hopes line up with what actually happens.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

We're just under half done. Practice bot should be done midweek according to the mentors, and metal cut for the real deal next weekend. We are pretty close to schedule.

Team 1345 is on schedule, we should have the robot done (mechanically and electrically) by this saturday. After that, we got a whole week to play with the code. 6th week will be used for lots of driver practice.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Yeah, we have 2 rolling chassis's and some of the electrical finished such as the camera ad stuff like that. The arm is coming along as far as the drawings are, but some fabs are being completed.

  :ahh: :yikes: ;)

we have our components build and mounted now we just eed to wire them up and program and then its practice time. so we're far behind schedule ;-)

Re: How far are you on your robot?

We have just completed a bare chasis with wheels. Other than that we have done some work on our programming and electronics and our VEX bot is almost done, but we still have a lot of work to do on the big robot. But were getting closer everyday.

Justin M. 29-01-2007 20:03

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Some major setbacks today. Chassis was giving us trouble with the bolt holes lining up....

Also, our big order from the Robot Marketplace never came in. We talked to them, and they never even got our check, which we sent two Saturdays ago. We are entering week 4 without the drive sprockets, shaft, chain, and flange mount bearings. Looks like we will have to put in an identical order with McMaster tomorrow and hope that we will have enough time to finish in time...right now we are still shooting for having it done by the beginning of the 6th week, but it might not happen.

I won't be able to make it to the meeting tomorrow, and we are losing friday (school's are closed). Hopefully we can get our McMaster order by Thursday so we can work late that night and all day Friday to get this thing moving....Wednesday when I return the only thing to do is to complete as much of the chassis as we can, then start work on the manipulators...leaving one week for dialing in that and the last week for testing.

Due to a few glitches in how we were expecting things to run we are behind schedule. Hopefully we will be able to double the number of meetings and get back on schedule.

we were right about on schedule a week ago but are now a little ahead. the 8 hour Thursday (Friday was a records day after midterms) and The 12 hour Saturday helped alot

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Well I don't know if my team is behind or on schedule but were just getting to build the electronics board and cutting the frame. Although we have ordered most of the important supply's we need such as wheels and game pads to control the robot with. Because our team grew larger since last year I think we'll get things done quickly though.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

we are a little bit behind schedule, but not by much, maybe a day or two, we should have the chassis 100% complete tomorrow morning, and driving. then we can get the tower set up and the end effector built, I hope we can finish lol:yikes:

We are somewhat on schedule (ahead of where we were in 2005 but behind where we were last year). The real issue is going to be weight...

I said we were ahead of schedule Burks. I mean come on, we were being HUGELY optimistic with finishing in 4 weeks, and we are on top of things this year! :D

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Today we made a ton of progress, and dare I say, back on schedule. We are having some issues with our sprocket orders coming in, but right now we are working around that by doing everything else, then just attatching sprockets and chain when they come. The chassis is pretty much 100% done and driveable, once our sprockets come in that is. The electronics are mounted, hooked up, and organized nicely. We also finished cutting and assembling the 80/20 for our manipulators, so they are ready to be mounted and tested tomorrow. It was a long work week, but we did get back on schedule, which is good because we are most likely losing Friday unless I transport the robot to my home shop and work there, which might be pointless anyway seeing as we should be done all that can be without those parts.

My guess is that by mid next week this thing should be 100% finished, building-wise that is. That leaves a little more than a week and a half to program, test, fine tune, re-engineer, and practice, which is better than past years where we were literally working up till the FedEx truck arrived.

waialua359 31-01-2007 20:39

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Our robot is finished (1st phase), ready to test. However, the fine tuning, programming, calibrations, etc. take a lot of time. AND, our drivers are terrible at the moment (new this year). Cant emphasize enough that driving is a KEY part of prepping during the 6 weeks. Robots, IMO, should be done at the latest after 5 weeks.
To ensure this, we spent many weeks prior getting things ready rather than waiting until kickoff. Veteran teams do this and/or have materials ready.
I understand that not every team can do this, like US. But there is a lot of things that teams should and can do to not waste unnecessary time.
:D :D

We are currently doing fine and hope to be completely (mechanically) finished by next weekend. After that we can program, wire, and test it.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

as an update to what I said, we are on schedule now lol. Half our arm is done and running, our chassis drives now, and we have fixed most errors in what has been programmed so far I feel much better lol

Andrew Blair 02-02-2007 22:12

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Eh, we're currently about 2-3 good days behind, but we should catch up Saturday with luck. Designs for the ramp and manipulator are nearly completely hashed out- just final dimensioning and fabrication/welding, and the electrical/pneumatics are done, organized, and troubleshot for the most part. Drive base is up and running like a champ, and if we can get back onto schedule shortly, we should have a little over a week for programming, troubleshooting, practice, and dare I say...powder coating?

We are definitely more organized this year than we have ever been, in 9 years.

Hope everybody can stay sane for the home stretch!

akshar 02-02-2007 22:30

Re: How far are you on your robot?

came home today, we are a little behind schedule nothing a little weekend can not fix. hopefully our arm and manipulator will be mounted tomorrow, and then the rampS!
