American Robot Season 2 Episode 3!

Hello Everyone,

It's Wednesday and that means the latest episode of American Robot is here! A lot is accomplished in this installment. This episode features our chassis moving under its own power and the welding of our beefy chassis. Unfortunately the episode is not available for download due to rendering/editing issues (you'll see at 4:00 in). But do not worry the downloadable episodes will be ready tomorrow. Have fun and stay tuned!

YouTube Version

(High,Medium,Low,Ipod, and WMV on the way)

Episode 1 & Episode 2

I loved the welding videos.

And the power slide on the little powerwheels car. Possibly the greatest thing ever.

I'm jealous of how fast your arm is coming together.
Do you really just cut random pieces and weld them together, though?

Looks great guy's,

I've always wanted to see the inner workings of the Rhode Warriors. If we spent that much time on an ATV we wouldn't even have a robot yet. Can't wait to see it in person. Best of luck

There is some precision involved. For this design, we agreed we wanted something that was symetrical so that it could pick up from the ground and score anywhere. The design for the torso and arm was CAD'ed, measured to stay within the 4' limit. What we "randomized" was the bracing. During the welding session we picked a height for the box tubing height and for the round tubing it was eyeballed to fit around the transmissions. I wouldn't call it "random". But you would be suprised home much is done on the fly and works out in the end. Keep the questions coming.

As far as producing CAD for every aspect of the machine, we do not do that. We do however, design those parts that seem "randomly" made in the video.

keep in mind that if you don't have precision machining equipment, CAD can be as much of an enemy as a savior. If we designed all aspects in CAD but then manufacture with hand tools, our tolerances could be so out of line that the design might not work.

For items such as the bent tube in the arm support, we simply define an acceptable range that the part can be in (extremely wide tolerance if you will). This makes it much easier on the fabricator.

One of my favorite Rick Sr. quotes came out during the welding session in this video. "Measure with a Vernier, Mark it with a Sharpie, cut it with a sawzall" Accurate CAD and measurement are great, but you have to keep in mind the tools you have to fabricate with.
