Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
HOLY COW!!!!
That.... I can't.... Its so.... wow. 6 motors gearbox. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that a FIRST record? It looks awesome, great job guys. I must say though, robots this year are looking a lot like they did for Triple Play. I think that is my only real gripe with Rack n Roll, it seems like its just Triple Play v2.0.... Anyways, that thing is a beast, and I can't wait to see it at the championship. Mike C. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Prolly the coolest drive i have ever seen... how much power do you get out of it?
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
That is crazy...
I think you guys have a really good chance at champs if that manipulator works well.... Your drive train is definitely something to be feared at least.... |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Sick!
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
That thing is just crazy awesome! I can't wait to see it in action!
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Zoheb, you're ostensibly ON 118. What's up with the exclamation about the beauty of the robot?
At any rate, 4 CIMS + 2 FP = about 1400W peak power, except the battery couldn't source that much current. If I were running that design, I'd be more than a little concerned about the ability of that dewalt tranny to handle that much torque. But then again, I've just never been for a single point of failure disabling my entire drivetrain. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
wow.
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
I have seen that idea being kicked around for years, putting the 4 CIMS and 2 Fischers in one power house and drive from there.... but not on a swerve drive:yikes: !!!
Amazing job, good luck this year:) |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
game over!
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Very impressive! It appears that you guys have built the optimal design! Swerve drive + 3 speeds + turret mounted arm. What's even more impressive is that you guys have finished with plenty of time left to test and become pros at driving. Good work!
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
that is awesome!!!!!
thats a beast, and i would be scared just from the sound it has. lol. Great job, that V6 looks killer. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Wow,
That looks like quite the marvel of engineering, i can't wait to check it out at the Houston Regional. Best of luck finishing it up, and at your competitions. Chris C. Engineer Team 148 00-02 151 Alum 03-06 229 Alum |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
So...you're driving all 4 wheels off of one point, AND its crab?? Amazing!! Please make it to the Championship so I can see this thing with my own two eyes.
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Are you able to rotate the wheels (in pairs at least) independently to skid steer like a tank drive?
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Wow, Impressive. That video was VERY well edited!
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Looks fairly short, are you going 4 ft 120 pounds?
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Ohhhhh myyyyyy gooooddd.....
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
You Texas boys and your fancy swerve drive. Why don't ya'll come up here to New England? I'm about to saddle me up a skid steer and herd ya'll fellers into a corner.
But in all seriousness, this thing is BEASTLY. 3 weeks practice cant hurt either... I expect no less than a regional win out of this machine. Great Job! |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
By the looks of it, they'll hold their own. Spinning wedge top is spinning wedgetop.. especially while pointing all 4 wheels in the same direction.
The wow is dying for me, and now I'm just hella curious how this setup works. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Quite impressive, especially to have it done by now.
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
If this doesnt motivate people to do work on the off-season, i dont know what will.
I've lost about an hour of sleep from watching this video and talking to people about it. Thanks to team 118 Just kidding guys, it looks great so far. I just hope that nothing in the V6 breaks. Cuz if that dewalt fails, so does your drive (it would seem). Nice work (and don't stop now that you have many peoples jaws on the floor, make it better) |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
That is one hell of a drive system.
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
that thing looks beastly, and the driving looks insane... very, very impressive
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
The single point of failure scares me too, but aside of that, I'm just scared of your robot. ;)
I wasn't lucky enough to see your 2006 bot in person, but when I saw you guys in Denver (and for a little while at Championship) in 2005, it definitely left an impression. This has several features that reminds me of that bot, merged with a couple features that remind me of a design we didn't chose (but with a way to solve the issue we had with it). I'm definitely impressed again. Pity (assuming the process stays the same) we can't be in the same division in Atlanta. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Can someone please save the video and e-mail it to me at dan.hoizner@gmail.com .
My school does not let us get onto youtube, and I don't want to wait to get home to see this robot. ;) Thanks much, Dan |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
^^^^
Same as the above, can anyone post screens of the robot? |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
That thing looks even cooler than your robot last year....nice job
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
I would like to see some more pictures of the robot that truly show it's power.
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
:ahh: Well done great job. Now you must work with it and DRIVE IT. Good luck --maybe see you in GA Come up to the North East some time we would have a HOOT with that one, GOOD luck to all on team 118 from team 88 TJ2.
SEEEE YAAAAAAA in APRIL --------- MOE :yikes: |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
As Travis said "SICK" ! I would like to see some better pictures of the drivetrain itself. 118 is defintely a team always striving to create something new they've done it again with that gearbox. Good luck Robonauts, may you go far in 07. Just for kicks and giggles who is the music in the video by?

Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Wow basically sums this thing up.
I commend on you on this insane drive train and pushing the development of FIRST. This thing is insane, and I bet its hella fun to drive. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Let me sum it up in one word: .
there is no word that will describe that robot other then . I have always liked your designs and now this has realy impressed me, good job and good luck. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
I'm also sort of worried for that DeWalt transmission. Recalling Chainzilla from 2005, though, I'm more worried about y'all running up the score too much. ;)
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Crazy just plain crazy.

Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Congrats to you all.
This is definetley going to be one formidable design to go against, considering you do not actually have to be pushing from just 2 sides, you can push from any point that the wheels are turned. Also the simplicity of the gripper for the tubes is great. (will it work even if the tubes are deflated to half the normal size?) |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
From coolness and innovation point of view that is really awesome! Curious how it works, but I don't think it is very optimal. What are chances of all the motors spinning in sync? I know what you have there is living proof that it works great but if one or two motors start to fall behind and start generating current...
either way great work guys, nice and big team you got there :D |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
:ahh:
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
I smell an award or two!!!
:yikes: Great work you guys and girls. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Looks like something I've seen before. Maybe one of those robots we built back when I was on the team. A shorter stronger one armed sibling i suppose.
![]() 4 years of crab drives and it keeps getting better. Nice work guys. I'm waiting for some clean pictures of the guts now. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
With all due respect to other teams and there robots team 118 may have built the greatest drivetrain EVER! (not to mention that manipulator is awsome)
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
well, besides the fact that motor sound in the begining is dubed from some race car, it is quite something to behold. great job guys. :D
|

Absolutely awesome. Can't wait to see it in person in Atlanta. But as impressive as the machine may be, 118 as a team continues to be an even bigger "wow!" There are not many teams that turn out entire herds of students every year with full working knowledge of ProE, practical experience with advanced fabrication techniques, and access to some of the best bar-b-que on the planet! Well done! -dave |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Absolutely insane. I'm scared. Really scared.
Good luck guys... May this be an amazing season for you. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Quote:
Not to mention it has the ability (in low gear I presume) to push 16 batteries! The driving force is practically obscene. Seeing as they've put it through very rigorous tests so far and the DeWalt hasn't failed, after some consideration, I think it might just be able to survive on a single DeWalt transmission. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
1 DeWalt with 4 CIM's and 2 FP's is insane, really pushing the limits. Really says something about the durability of the drill transmissions.
Once again, truly amazing!!!:D :D :D |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Meh. Looks okay.
Just kidding! If I recall my response to the person who sent this to me over AIM correctly, it was "[22:22] Me: !!!!!!11!oneone" I was just happy figuring out how to do a simple CIM-hooked-into-a-Dewalt drive train this year, but WOWza. I hope you guys (1. win, and 2.) assemble either a white paper or just a small report to give the rest of us a glance at how this amazing thing works. (Although it would be cool if it made cool car sounds too.) |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
An engineering marvel in FIRST :ahh:
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Iremember chainzilla from '05' nats. That thing was insane. I can only imagine this beast. sweet video. I love coaxial swerves, they are simply amazing.Good job guys congrats on a great robot
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
I'd just like to draw attention to some of the comments that have been posted below the YouTube video clip, that is, without giving them much credence. ChiefDelphi is an environment where we can all be exposed to the idea of GP and understanding the different inherent characteristics and qualities of each team, but YouTube cannot be considered in the same light. That being said, I would hope anyone that linked from here to YouTube would not be posting anything there that they would not choose to here.
Also, that's one impressive machine. And thats an understatement! |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
well I just showed that to our robot . . the printf statement I got back was "Id let that climb on me all day long".
any way good job guys hope to see this more up close at LSR. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
HaHa!
What a great robot! Lone Star is going to rock! And with Kris as emcee - it's going to be a blast! All the best 118 - Jane |

I whole heartedly agree, that thing (Monster, Beast, Goliath) is stinkin' awesome. It's way to cruel to show it to us and not tell us how it works.:P Hope the rest of your season works a beautifully as your robot does. |

The only down fall of this beast i see, is how will you guys be able to remove spoilers and replace them on the rack?
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
It looks like they could bran them from the top, and carry them perpendicular to the floor and score them on another.

Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
the one thing i'm wondering is how is it hooked up to the wheels? cause with the rules you won't have enough motors to have 2 of those things.

Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
Impressive! I don't really think I've seen anything like that before....
I bet that thing really eviscerates batteries. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
well, judging by the pictures, it looks like there is only space for one more motor to turn the wheels.. this makes me wonder what would have been your choice seeing as you have a minibike motor powering the arm... hmm..

:D It's really good and I wanna make it better.:D |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
WOW! :ahh: :ahh: :ahh:
Very impressive power, hope we get a chance to compete at nationals. ;) |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
holy...
crap... Congratulations on this amazing achievement, and with almost 3 weeks to spare as well! I'm actually kind of glad that you aren't attending our regional this year, you'd smoke us just like you did in '05 with chainzilla. I do hope to see this thing up close at championships. Spectacular work guys! |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
can you say nationals?
how fast does that thing go and how much torque because i think i saw it bulldozing eight 12v batteries anyway great job guys congratulations |

Very impressive. Good luck, and in the event that we both reach nationals and are placed in the same division, I hope that we do not get matched against you ;)
P.S. - If I'm not mistaken, one of your adult mentors, Rob Burridge, used to be one of our mentors before moving to work for NASA. |
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
What is the robot's top speed?
|
Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled
wait a second.. im not so sure how this thing is working..
I mean, think about it... It has 6 motors powering the wheels coaxial swerve drive (requiring 2 motors) a turret (requiring one motor) and a telescoping arm (requiring another motor) thats a total of 10 hmm, theres something either against the rules here, or even more amazing than we origionally thought! |

Is that thing street legal?!?
