HOLY COW!!!!

That.... I can't.... Its so.... wow. 6 motors gearbox. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that a FIRST record?

It looks awesome, great job guys.

I must say though, robots this year are looking a lot like they did for Triple Play. I think that is my only real gripe with Rack n Roll, it seems like its just Triple Play v2.0....

Anyways, that thing is a beast, and I can't wait to see it at the championship.

That is crazy...

I think you guys have a really good chance at champs if that manipulator works well.... Your drive train is definitely something to be feared at least....

Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled

Zoheb, you're ostensibly ON 118. What's up with the exclamation about the beauty of the robot?

At any rate, 4 CIMS + 2 FP = about 1400W peak power, except the battery couldn't source that much current. If I were running that design, I'd be more than a little concerned about the ability of that dewalt tranny to handle that much torque. But then again, I've just never been for a single point of failure disabling my entire drivetrain.

I have seen that idea being kicked around for years, putting the 4 CIMS and 2 Fischers in one power house and drive from there.... but not on a swerve drive:yikes: !!!
Amazing job, good luck this year:)

Very impressive! It appears that you guys have built the optimal design! Swerve drive + 3 speeds + turret mounted arm. What's even more impressive is that you guys have finished with plenty of time left to test and become pros at driving. Good work!

You Texas boys and your fancy swerve drive. Why don't ya'll come up here to New England? I'm about to saddle me up a skid steer and herd ya'll fellers into a corner.

But in all seriousness, this thing is BEASTLY. 3 weeks practice cant hurt either...
I expect no less than a regional win out of this machine. Great Job!

By the looks of it, they'll hold their own. Spinning wedge top is spinning wedgetop.. especially while pointing all 4 wheels in the same direction.

The wow is dying for me, and now I'm just hella curious how this setup works.

Just kidding guys, it looks great so far. I just hope that nothing in the V6 breaks. Cuz if that dewalt fails, so does your drive (it would seem).

Nice work (and don't stop now that you have many peoples jaws on the floor, make it better)

The single point of failure scares me too, but aside of that, I'm just scared of your robot. ;)
I wasn't lucky enough to see your 2006 bot in person, but when I saw you guys in Denver (and for a little while at Championship) in 2005, it definitely left an impression. This has several features that reminds me of that bot, merged with a couple features that remind me of a design we didn't chose (but with a way to solve the issue we had with it). I'm definitely impressed again. Pity (assuming the process stays the same) we can't be in the same division in Atlanta.

Congrats to you all.

This is definetley going to be one formidable design to go against, considering you do not actually have to be pushing from just 2 sides, you can push from any point that the wheels are turned.

Also the simplicity of the gripper for the tubes is great. (will it work even if the tubes are deflated to half the normal size?)

Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled

From coolness and innovation point of view that is really awesome! Curious how it works, but I don't think it is very optimal. What are chances of all the motors spinning in sync? I know what you have there is living proof that it works great but if one or two motors start to fall behind and start generating current...

either way great work guys, nice and big team you got there :D

There are not many teams that turn out entire herds of students every year with full working knowledge of ProE, practical experience with advanced fabrication techniques, and access to some of the best bar-b-que on the planet! And faster. I have reports that this thing goes a full 4 feet per second faster in high gear than Chainzilla did. :ahh:
Not to mention it has the ability (in low gear I presume) to push 16 batteries! The driving force is practically obscene. Seeing as they've put it through very rigorous tests so far and the DeWalt hasn't failed, after some consideration, I think it might just be able to survive on a single DeWalt transmission.

1 DeWalt with 4 CIM's and 2 FP's is insane, really pushing the limits. Really says something about the durability of the drill transmissions.

Meh. Looks okay.

Just kidding! If I recall my response to the person who sent this to me over AIM correctly, it was

I was just happy figuring out how to do a simple CIM-hooked-into-a-Dewalt drive train this year, but WOWza. I hope you guys (1. win, and 2.) assemble either a white paper or just a small report to give the rest of us a glance at how this amazing thing works.

I'd just like to draw attention to some of the comments that have been posted below the YouTube video clip, that is, without giving them much credence. ChiefDelphi is an environment where we can all be exposed to the idea of GP and understanding the different inherent characteristics and qualities of each team, but YouTube cannot be considered in the same light. That being said, I would hope anyone that linked from here to YouTube would not be posting anything there that they would not choose to here.

Also, that's one impressive machine. And thats an understatement!

My guess is they did some hardening of the internals, or other processes. If those are stock, that's a lot of torque to be handling, and quite impressive.

Ha, those Dewalt gears are already really hard. A local machinist who helped us would not even use his carbide tooling on them- he ran them through a wire EDM- as Dr. Joe suggested. The whole box is made of hard, hard, hard powdered metal. Actually, if all the tolerances on the input gears are as good as the real drill (which I'm sure they are with 118), I would feel moderately safe with four motors. But six? Not real keen on that one, but we'll see I guess! I think they probably know what they're doing!

KingBK 02-02-2007 21:18

Re: Team 118 Robonauts - Unvieled

the one thing i'm wondering is how is it hooked up to the wheels? cause with the rules you won't have enough motors to have 2 of those things.

It's a coaxial swerve drive (search CDmedia for pictures). Essentially, the one gearbox powers all 4 wheels, and separate motors turn the swerve modules (in pairs of two)

coaxial swerve drive (requiring 2 motors)
a turret (requiring one motor)

thats a total of 10

If I'm not mistaken, you're allowed up to 15 motors

4 CIM (2 KOP, 2 extra)
2 FP
2 Large CIMs (1 KOP, on extra)
2 Globes
2 Banebots

1 Denso
