Maybe...my diagnosis would be that he accidentally turned on the preview pane in the Content Center.

I always joke when I show people how to open something from the Content Center:
"So, you double click on the screw you want to use, go to the barbershop and get a haircut, and the next dialog box will probably be open by the time you get back."
