Dream Job
Hello everyone :D brave:D enough to post on this thread. I would like to know two things about you.
1. Where your team hails from.(Also include team #) 2. What your dream/goal for life is, and how FIRST helps you achieve it. I'll start, My team is 1652 and we hail from Pleasant Prairie wisconsin. My dream in life is to build and design a fully functional humanoid robot. But not just any bot, I want to make one that can last a week without a recharge, can operate in extream temperatures, and is able to think for itself.(with absolutely no help from a human operator.) FIRST is helping me reach my dream by allowing me to build robots at a very early age. I personaly am having a blast programming our team's robot:yikes: :ahh: Well that it for me, now someone elses turn:ahh: |
Re: Dream Job
I'm from Fredericksburg, VA from team 2021. I'm not quite sure where I want to go but FIRST has given me insight into embedded systems and engineering. I am just a junior though. Maybe next year Ill know more, maybe not until I get into college.
Also, see this thread. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ight=dream+job |
Re: Dream Job
I'm from team 191 the X-Cats in Rochester, NY.
My dream used to be to work for Disney or Pixar but now I'd rather develope my own animated interent comic website. |
Re: Dream Job
Pleasant prairie,WI 1652 and i want 2 be an engineer. First helps me by getting me practice for l8er in life

Re: Dream Job
Team Challenger, #2047 from Chicago
Robotics full time while being a freelance artist on the side... OR Working with animatronic cartoon characters or prosthetics. I can't believe how much being on this team has helped me, not only by being a good reference for college applications but for also learning some basic and advanced factors of mechanical engineering. |
Re: Dream Job
Raider Robotics, team 25, North Brunswick NJ.
My dream is to become General Manager of a Professional Sports team or to be a driver in the Nextel Cup. FIRST has helped me develop my mind to look outside the box at strategies and things of that nature. It has also taught me leadership skills, as well as many other necessary skills. |
Re: Dream Job
Im in Florida team 1875, i want to have my own computer company and do whatever i feel like when i feel like it. FIRST is getten me through college(i hope) and it has helped me sharpen my skills.

Re: Dream Job
My team is from little country town Liberal, Kansas team #1666
First robotics helps me to open up to new ideas and make friends with alot of people I would never think to come in contact with. My dream career field would be in the photography field...working with people is a good skill to have. This whole experience for me has been fullfilling and Im learning so much from everyone on my team.:p |
Re: Dream Job
Team Kika Mana (TKM.368) from Hawaii
Dream job: work for Apple (hardware engineer, graphic artist, or web designer). FIRST has taught me how to work with others in small groups. 2nd Dream job: work for FIRST. |
Re: Dream Job
My dream is to one day work at Pixar or be a part of and animation crew in a big shot company. FIRST helped me realize I have a knack for animation. Always have but never knew. It also taught me that If you work hard at something, you'll get what you want. I wanted a reigional award for animation competition. Over the summer of my junior year I taught myself 3ds max. It was the most frusturating thing i could have ever done. But in the end, I got what I wanted, but realized something else that was even more important.

Re: Dream Job
I'm from team 648 and we are from the Quad Cities.
My dream job is to work with computer aided drafting and FIRST has helped b/c we use drafting to help make a 3d model of the robot. If not that, I would like to be a photographer and FIRST has helped that by... I was/have been my team's photographer and its load of fun :) |
Re: Dream Job
Five build-seasons ago, I joined Beach Cities Robotics, team 294, knowing nothing about FIRST nor anything like it.
Each year I learned more than I ever had in school about the practical applications of not only science and technology but cooperation, leadership, and schedule. My dream job has always been to make, create, invent, and discover rather than duplicate, maintain, or destroy. I especially did not want to do any pedestrian job outside of these categories. I wanted to be an "inventor" in kindergarten. "Mad scientist" was my first grade costume. For years after that, I wanted to be an electrical engineer. FIRST did not change my direction towards, but it indisputably strengthened it. Without FIRST, I would be just another sideline spectator of technology, without anything to support my transition into the real application of knowledge. I was able to expound on many priceless experiences, most of which directly resulted from FIRST, on my college admissions essays. Apparently colleges understand the value of these, as I have so far been admitted to five University of California schools of engineering. I fully credit FIRST for this feat which, based GPA and other more common indicators, would never be possible. This summer I will be putting my experience from robotics to use at one of the most respected engineering firms in the country. The Aerospace Corporation approached me with an offer for a internship, a program is normally reserved for upper college and graduate students. Although I will not be having the same kind of fun as in robotics, it excites me that I will have to opportunity to contribute to some really amazing and cutting-edge projects there. I am not even out of high school, and my foot is already in the door of my dream job. And FIRST got me there. |
Re: Dream Job
My dream job would be to work for NASA and help the next generation of robots reach the moon or Mars. (LINK). I think it would be awesome because there are FIRST teams at almost every NASA branch that has to do with robotics. After observing a meeting, I realized that building robots is not all fun and games and that much more thought goes into it compared to the FIRST Robotics Competition, especially if you want your robot to go somewhere and not just be a prototype.
Dreams come and go, but once life throws a football you have to think fast. Pavan. |
Re: Dream Job
I'm from Lower Merion, PA (right outside of Philadelphia), alum of Team 1712.
My goal in life (which I'm pretty close to) is to work for Cirque Du Soleil and some major NY theatrical shows as a Technical Director. Sadly though, I cant really say that FIRST has helped me with any of these. I know that my expertise in construction/materials and troubleshooting has helped my team, but I haven't really learnt anything that could be applied to my trade. |
Re: Dream Job
Im from Ann Arbor, MI, Alum of 1015
My goal in life is to have a job that I have fun doing. I would like to work in a small team of people who contract out work for designing mobile robots for many various tasks. Military, space, or consumer - as long as they are new jobs, and not doing something that has been done before (I dont want to make the same thing over and over). I specificaly want it to be a small interactive group that i really enjoy doing work with.. I will find/make that job some day... A job that i know is out there: working for NASA or the military designing robots. |
Re: Dream Job
I'm from The TechnoKats, 45
My dream job is to be a Technology Education teacher at a school with a FIRST team. Then I would like to move up in the system to become the superintendent and make it so all the schools would have some sort of FIRST in them. |
Re: Dream Job
My Team is from Paterson. NJ team 1881. And like to me a mechanical engineer for a cutting edge engineering company like Boeing, iRobot, Lockheed Martin, the CIA(lol). First has giving me practice on make something from paper to aluminum.

Re: Dream Job
I'm from Greensboro,NC by way of upstate NY... my team is me.myself, and I :p
I'm working with some guys on starting a after school robotics program for kids that have parent(s) in prison. Either with FIRST, BEST, BallBot, or some other group. Something to get the kids interested in more than just sitting in front of the TV playing vid games and helping them stay in school. These kids need something more to choose from that joining the local street gang or running dope for the local dealer. My dream job... well I've actually had a couple dream jobs. Trouble is after getting them they turned out to be more of a nightmare than dream! My fav was as a NC DOT QMS QC / NDT... aka the guy that tested new roads using a nuclear density gauge! Problem was the company I worked for was sold and I refused to work for the new owners. My next dream job... working for a small electronics company building components or working at a small machine shop making parts with a CNC. Of course getting paid for building virtual locos and rolling stock for train simulators (MSTS or a VR) would be most excellent! :D |
Re: Dream Job
I am from Team THRUST 1501 from Huntington, IN.
I have to go with Koko Ed on this one. I too would love to either work for Disney or Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Or if I wasn’t married yet. I would love to be the light designer for Trans Siberian Orchestra and travel with them to different shows for about one year… Or I would love to be on MythBusters with Grant. Gosh I love that show! |
Re: Dream Job
Craig Hickman from 114, in Los Altos California.
My first goal in life is to be a mechanical engineer, and to make new inventions. My slightly more far fetched goal is to become a weapons engineer (not something you see often...). At the same time, I'd like to make some severe political changes in the US government system.... |

Re: Dream Job
I am happily a member of Team 102 Gearheads from Somerville, NJ
I do not have a dream job [yet]... even though I am a senior :ahh: But I do know that ever since I have been involved with FIRST, I knew I wanted to do something along the lines of what I did in FIRST, even being involved with FIRST in some way. I just have to thank FIRST for opening so many possibilities for me, as well as other students. Without FIRST, I doubt I'd be the person I am today. That being said... my dream job, I guess after saying that small but there, would be incoperating FIRST, in some way, into my life. |
Re: Dream Job
my name is Sebastian Acosta-Nijamkin from coral springs, Florida

2. My goal in life is to be happy and (not now. later.) provide for a happy family. FIRST got me out of a bad direction in high school. It did make me realize that I didn't like specific engineering, but that I enjoyed strategy and planning. I'm now a Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness major at VCU, with a minor in Religious Studies. I hope to do policy planing work, and have gotten to participate at the state level already. I'm really excited about the next few years of my life. :) Wetzel |
Re: Dream Job
My Dream Job would have to be working for google, as either a programmer, web developer, or just someone that thinks up ideas. Google is one of the coolest, fastest growing companies ever.

Alumni of Buzz 175 (CT), NU-TRONS 125 (Boston-NU), and former QUEEN 1975 mentor (Milton, MA)...
My dream job? I want invent and create tangible robotic applications not yet forseen, figure out the integration, design and build the prototypes necessary to improve upon the concepts and solicity funding, pass the robot off to a real design team and serve as the project lead for a little while, and then move on to the next idea of another tangible robotic applicaton. Of course working under the assumption that full Aritificial Intelligence will never exist. Need that PhD first. |
Re: Dream Job
Alum of team 254 from San Jose, CA.
My dream job is to fly corporate jets for a large company. Although I'm happy with just being paid to fly period. |
Re: Dream Job
I'm from Team 234 from Indy
I don't know exactly what I want to be. I'm interested in all my school subjects, and I love robotics...all I know is that FIRST helps me in so many ways. On our team there is an interviewing process, and that experience will definitely help me in any career path. In addition, the skills that get taught through FIRST like design and critical thinking is beneficial in whether I go in to engineering, science, or even something like history! |
Re: Dream Job
Kyle Rice Team MOE 365 alumni.
I am close to my dream job, I want to be a professional Fire Fighter- Paramedic in the Tempe Arizona area. As of right now I am working to finish my Fire Fighters certifications, Fire Fighter 1 and 2, gotta take the written test I guess actuality doing it at work isn't good enough, and am a EMT working full time for a 911 operations company in a mid sized city. All I need to do is move there and get my licenses as a Paramedic. I also hope to one day be a teacher for EMS and Fire Fighters because right now I teach CPR/AED/FIRST-AID and also life guarding and other safety classes and I love sharing what I know to others. |
Re: Dream Job
From: team 234 in Indianapolis, IN
dream job 1) Some type of engineer. This would be entirely through the workings of FIRST and Scott Ritchie. Without FIRST, I would not have considered engineering as being something I would be interested in and/or capable of doing. And I owe Mr. Ritchie, since his small, but influential speech at freshman orientation that convinced me that I had to be a part of Project Lead the Way. :) dream job 2) architect. I have always liked architecture and there are many concepts applied through FIRST that would help in this field. Teamwork alone is something that is valuable in any career, as well as all of the leadership skills. |
Re: Dream Job
Team 1403, Cougar Robotics, Skillman NJ
My Dream Job Would have to be Chief Engineer on a car. My Life Goal is to design and have a car built from the ground up and sold. I'd love to be a chief engineer at any company that'd let me do that (if I had a choice, it'd be Tesla Motors). |
Re: Dream Job
I'm with rookie team 1983 in Seattle, Washington. Both FIRST, and my science, math and technology focused high school have helped me realize that I am destined to be an engineer. After being able to design the electrical system on our bot, and then build it and figure out all of the flaws and how to improve it, I am hooked on engineering, as a whole, for life. My goal is to graduate from the United States Naval Academy with a degree in some area of engineering (probably electrical, go figure) and then spend a few years in the Navy as a fighter pilot. Then I plan on becoming a teacher back here in seattle and coming back to Skunkworks as a mentor, and hopefully raise a family and send them all through the FIRST experience. FIRST has opened my eyes to all of the different things that I can do with my life, to new areas of aviation, aerospace, engineering, and just how much fun life can really be!

Re: Dream Job
Team 675, Hailing from Rohnert Park, California. We're the only team in the northern bay area.
Career path: Tossup between automotive technician/mechanic and Engineer (but I am leaning towards going to UC Davis for a Mechanical Engineering Major, the other option would be UTI Phoenix or UTI Sacramento for my ASE and other certifications) How FIRST is helping: Auto Tech/Mechanic: Teaching me to work with my hands, to find and solve mechanical issues, and teaching me to use some pretty cool tools (like our team's precision mill, woot) Engineer: Teaching me to think critically, to try and find weak points or flaws that could be fixed, all while trying to keep something within a target weight and also with certain components (kind of like how one of 675's grabbers, the one that I designed, was pneumatically actuated, even though we have no pump or tanks, we ended up using a servo-powered gripper then taking our arm off at SVR) and resrtictions. Any profession: Teaching me to be safe, to think about what I'm doing and what I'm doing it with, and teaching me just how much I can achieve in 6 weeks. |
Re: Dream Job
Team #234, out of Indianapolis (Cyber Blue)
I'd really like to have some job where I can help out others on a national or global scale. With all the hardship going on in the world, I hope that I can do something to fix some of it. FIRST has helped by giving me some design experience, and it has shown me just some of the possible careers where I can make a difference. Let's change the world. ;) |
Re: Dream Job
This is my tenth year with Team 122 the NASA Knights, in Hampton,Virginia, and I am an engineering technician at NASA Langley, and have been fortunate to work in a rewarding and challenging field since 1985. The earliest origin of my journey to this "Dream Job" began when I was 17, I wanted to make exotic, light weight parts for my motocross bike....that's how it starts...for me it was a machining class...
Please check this announcement from NASA Langley about employment possibilities: To All Employees at Langley Research Center, We are excited to announce that a Technologist Co-op/Apprentice Program with Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) will start in the Fall of 2007. On Wednesday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m., TNCC will host an Open House at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center in Hampton, VA. Please stop by and talk with NASA and TNCC personnel about this excellent opportunity. An overview of the Program will also be offered at the Reid Center which will provide information on the Program and how to apply. Watch for upcoming http://atlarc2.larc.nasa.gov announcements that will provide details on this event. The Program will provide formal training and on-the-job training in both Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electronics with a specialization in Electrical Engineering Technology. There will be 14 students selected for the Fall semester. The tuition and books required for the TNCC training will be provided by NASA. Those students that complete the 3-year Co-op Program and pass a SpaceTec certification exam will be considered for entry into NASA LaRC's 2-year Apprentice Program. Program Admission Requirements ----------------------------------------------- In addition to the TNCC general admission requirements (published in their catalog), applicants for the TNCC/NASA Co-op Program in Electronics & Mechanical Engineering Technology must obtain a high school diploma with at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) that includes the successful completion of three units of high school Math (Algebra I & II and Geometry). Applicants with college credits must have earned a 2.5 GPA or higher and meet the mathematics prerequisites. Co-op Education Requirements ----------------------------------------------- All students interested in the co-op education program must apply by submitting an application to the Coordinator of Co-op Education at TNCC. Applicants must hold U.S. Citizenship. The final selection will be based on the grade point average of all students applying, information within the application, a physical examination, a security background check, and an interview with the Employment Development Specialist at NASA. ------- For more information contact: Jessena Godfrey, Cooperative Education Coordinator 757-865-5882 or godfreyj@tncc.edu |
