2007 San Diego Regional

Well .. looks like no one has started this thread yet .. so I'll take a moment to do so :)

Team 1388 is excited to be a part of the birth of another great FRC regional.

Lucky is just as excited as we are to be going there .. to see a little more about him (or her?) .. you can see a teaser video HERE (13mb WMV9)

Feel free to stop by our pit if you need anything (or if you just want to say hi :D ). We're extremely pleased to announce that we will have a special item to offer to every single team at the regional .. more information to come on that. And no, it is not a button or something that has ever been given out before (at least as far as I know of )

By the way, great video too. Can't wait to see Lucky in person!

See you in a month!

Re: 2007 San Diego Regional

Hey, I will be running the Robot FIRST Aid Station again. If any teams want a special request for me to put on the database or if they have any suggestion, feel free to contact me.

For those who are new to what we do, the FIRST Aid Station is a database that 599 does of what everyone at regionals brings, to which if a team needs a part, we tell them which teams need the part. As well, we have experienced students go out to teams who have not passed inspection and/or are not finished with the robot and give them an extra hand or some advice of how to fix problems.

We are already updating the list and adding a new section so if your team has some expertise that you would like to help other teams with, we can include that when teams ask for help.

*yes I copied from the LA Regional thread, but im in english class and dont have time to write up another intro... lol. *

Can't wait for SD, see you guys there

Thank You,
Eric

Obviously we'll be there with Daisy...

We're just finishing up the last of our competition stuff before it goes off to the printers. Perhaps San Diego will see the debut of our new 'Got FIRST?' schwag.

Team 1510 will be there with our Red Kiss

It will undergo a couple modifications at the San Diego regional based on new knowledge gained from the Portland Regional, so we hope it will perform as well as it did during practice.

The robot has proven to be very reliable, never broke down. Also, in one of our matches our alliance scored 76 points (tubes only) while the other alliance one with one robot up on the ramp with a score of 106. Quite the match.

We have an autonomous that has worked multiple times, but have some kinks to be hammered out. Here is a short video of the robot in action during autonomous:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B1WIX_C9GM

I look forward to seeing you all at the competition! And if you need any help, don't hesitate to ask! We're here to have a good time, and do the best we can, and we believe everyone should have a great experience, regardless of issues faced during the matches. So!

See you all there! Best of luck!

Caio

So you know, the "item" is a circuit board for the ifi backup battery charging circuit. If you need clarification to what that is here is a link to the schematic http://ifirobotics.com/docs/first-backup-charger.pdf. The parts for the board will need to be acquired separately but Team 1515 will be providing them free of charge as well. Hope to see you all there and good luck and send me a message if you have any questions.

do you guys use the camera to track the green light and cap in auto that way? or do you dead reckon like what beachbots did in LA?

btw, we've got our programmer working day and night getting our camera to work :D can't wait until we stack in auto.

696 will be there with The Burd. Lift tickets will be available on an as needed basis. :D One very important note, if you are in a match with us, try to get your robot test lifted before-hand, in the practice field area.

I hope to be inspecting Thursday, so look for me around. As a note to teams, you better not make me wear my inspector badge on Friday. Let's get you all passed on Thursday please. Numbers, flag holders, wiring, pneumatics, the whole bit.

Does anyone have any info on the social? I haven't heard or read anything.

Ah yes the social...

Yes there will be a social. It will be Friday (3/23) from 6pm-8:30pm at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. All the exhibits in the museum will be opened up, including (from what I understand) the restoration facilities below the building, which are usually off limits. This museum is actually one of the better ones in San Diego. Also, dinner will be served to all attendees in the outdoor courtyard.

we used to use the camera and an ultrasonic range finder. The camera would track till we lined up and lost the signal because it was to high up, then we'd use the ultrasonic to bounce off the rack and find our distance from the rack. Once it was at the distance we wanted, i'd drop the tube, open the claw, and back off.
Since the rack is at an angle a lot, the ultrasonic isn't working as well because the signal ricochets off at an angle and doesn't come back to the sensor, so instead we're going to use the camera to line up until it loses the track, then move forward through turning the motors on for about 1 second, then drop the tube. Our alignment with the rack is good, its just we're either to close or too far, and we expect to correct that really soon. It should be functioning well at San Diego. :D

Must of got pulled. I think I read somewhere that it was depending on the avaibility of an internet connection for the team to do it (or maybe that was LA).

Either way .. 1388 is on their way :) Just passing through Oxnard. Can't wait to see all you there (and see the 15 teams or so that were at LA also)

We will have the huge vise again, and anyone who needs it, is more than willing to come and use it. Just please don't bring over any grinders and cut stuff with them (or any tools that are not allowed in the pits). We like to keep the Safety Judges happy :p

We will also be passing out the IFI backup battery charging (etched) circuit boards (as mentioned above). It's one per team, so please don't lose it. The freshmen worked hard to make those boards. For anyone who cares, the boards were designed, etched and drilled all by students on team 1388. We ran the board during build season, and at the LA regional, and our backup battery lasted all day (with the camera). We did put the battery on the 120v charger at night though. We will also be giving each team a copy of the IFI schematic for assembling it. Please test your circuit before putting it on the robot. The charger will put out about 8.5v unloaded to the RC and the battery port. If you need any help or have any questions on the circuit, assembly or whatnot, feel free to come to our pits and ask for Mike (you can try Phatmike, but some of the newer kids might look at you funny.

A little birdie told me that there might be a team passing out part kits for those backup battery charging boards .. the same birdie told me that those part kits were designed to fit into the board we're passing out. I haven't confirmed that the team will have the part kits, but if you look for some penguins *cough* 1717 *cough* in the pits, I'm sure they will be able to tell you if they have the kits. As far as I know, they do.

interesting that 330 would pick 696... Were 330's ramps not working properly, or did they choose to not use them? I know 696 has great lifts and I suppose they would be faster than ramps, just interesting alliances.

I think they are going to cruise..330 and 696. They can both score, and 696 has the best ramps there (AFAIK).

I think 1717's ramps are better. They're even bigger than 696's.

They did have some issues deploying them in the semis at LA though.

I predict that the winner of SF2 wins the regional

Joe Ross 24-03-2007 17:31

In SF2-1 the refs ruled that a tube is a part of the robot so that 368 didn't count as in the home zone. They were holding a tube which was outside of the home zone but the robot was in the home zone.

Joe Ross 24-03-2007 17:34

In SF1-1 and QF1-2 696 did not succesfully lift. Hopefully they get it worked out.

it happens when one of the partners in the alliance have a problem they are unable to fix in time, and so are unable to compete. they bring in the next highest seeded team as a replacement bot. but the other robot still gets to win as well as it contributed to the alliances efforts

Team 1717 was proud to be there as well and compete in what nust have been some of the most thrilling and nervewracking finals and semifinals matches in the nation this year.

We finally got our lifts perfected and lifetd 18 other 'bots in 10 qualifying matches and the two which we didn't lift were disabled during our matches by FIRST so they had no power to make it back to our robot to be lifted so we lifeted every robot possible in every qualifying match.

BIG BIG BIG props go out to 330 696 and 835 for an epic finals match and for preventing our alliance teammates from accessing our ramps - awesome startegy guys. Those matches were unbelievable, go out there and show atlanta that us southern claifornia teams are the real thing :)

Thanks to everyone there for an amazing competition.

Those finals were very intense matches indeed, I was shocked that our robot was still driving after all of those pushing matches, and our front and back bumpers have been totally destroyed. We also did a lot of damage to other robots as well...Of course, it helps that our base was partly designed by a very successful battle bot competitor.....

Great job everyone. Though it was not one of the greatest years for 599, we had a good time. Sorry we wont be going to Atlanta, werent able to qualify, good luck to the teams that are. Big shout out to 1266, great job. When I arrived early on friday to help set up FIRST Aid and the Machine Shop I told Joe Acker I had a hunch, and I was right. Great job 812, you guys are an amazing team as well. As for 330, 696, and 835, congrats. BeachBots, just go out there and win another World Championship so that people will finally recognize the greatness the West Coast brings that everyone else overlooks.

599 is going back to the drawing boards to make sure we dont have a repeat of this year's results, regarding the robot that is. Hope to see everyone next year. Great regional and glad to be the winner of one of SD's first Judges Award.

That was a great regional. I loved the location. There was a Home Depot was across the street, our hotel was also across the street, and all the resturants were in walking distance.

Congrats to 330, 696, and 835 for winning. And congrats to 368, 1717, and 294 for making it to the finals, you were a tough alliance to play against.

Hey all...

Just want to say congratulations to all the teams at the San Diego Regional. The event went great...and in all honesty, didn't even feel like a rookie regional (and I've been to my fair share). As a ref (I was the one who sat at the red alliance station and called most of the penalities on the red alliance...but i figured since I got scowled at and hugged...it couldn't have been that bad :) ) and part of the regional planning committee, I hope that all who participated had a great time. I know I did.

Congratulations again to the everyone involved, especially the winning alliance. Although, I have to admit, when I ref'd the first match on Friday and saw 1717 do their ramp thing...it brought a tear to my eye. And I love the Penguin dance...but now I'm off on a tangent. ;)

And I love the Penguin dance...but now I'm off on a tangent. ;)

~Christina

Thank you Christina. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The Penguin dance will be back next year!

The regional was amazing.

368; you were a great scorer and lead us to the finals.
1717; There isn't a better lifter out there.

For anyone watching; We shredded our treads in our first quarter final due to improper attachment (my fault). Since our arm broke in the second quarter final, we were were forced to play defense... Quite a dilemna as we now had six smooth aluminum wheels. 1717's coach had the idea to put zipties on our center wheel for traction. Using zipties as tread, we were still able to play amazing defense on 968, and 330 (we even beat their undefeated alliance once).

Thanks everyone, it was an awesome event.

I second Ross' thanks... Although we are disappointed not to go to nationals and showcase our design, all the compliments are amazing. Its very nice to know that our efforts were recognized.

I would like to thank you (as well as all the refs) for some very well called matches - you guys (and girls :D ) were awesome. Thank you.

Big shout out to teams 368 (kikamana) and 294 (beach cities), you guys were amazing. I could never ask for better teammates. Killer offense 368, and incredible defense (even when your arm broke) 294. Thank you guys so much...

Thanks to 696, 835, and 1216 for helping us out! We couldn't have done it without you guys!
To 1717, 368, and 294: You guys formed an amazing alliance with some great strategy; it was an honor to compete on the same field as three great teams like yourselves. :)

San Diego was such an amazing regional, I think 330 will be back next year! Thanks to all the refs and volunteers who made it possible.

Re: 2007 San Diego Regional

Hi All,

First I would like to apologize for our late response regarding the San Diego regional. Our team just returned home on Monday after being on the road for almost two weeks.

San Diego was a blast! We had so much fun and it was an honor competing with and against some of the best teams.

A Belated congratulations to 330, 696, 835 and 1216. You guys played smart and were just unstopable. Your teams are a class act and while we would have liked to have won, it wasn't so bad finishing second to you. One request though. Please Please Please win the Championships. That way, I can say that only the best beat us!:D

Team 1717 your lift was just plain amazing. We couldn't believe we were fortunate enough to have you in our alliance. I need to ask you about that PVC foam composite you used. I found your team very well prepared and organized for only a 2nd year team.

Team 294, you guys were the energizer bunnys or if anyone is old enough to remember the timex commercials ("It takes a licking and keeps on ticking"). I couldn't believe the damage you were sustaining, yet were still able to effectively play the game. To not have treads and to have your arm totally disabled by the end of the quarterfinals and still make it to the finals is a feat in itself.

I just want to let you both know that we couldn't have asked for a better alliance. I think both of your teams were outstanding. We are just a bit dissapointed that we could not come through for you guys in the end and to give you a chance to showcase your stuff at the Championships.

Just for your info, I burned the video feed of nearly every match including the finals. If you want a copy, don't hesitate to contact me.

I completely agree about our alliance being great, and that the winners from SD need to put on a good show at the championships.

Alan,
How can I answer any questions you have about our panel/foam?

We took video of most of the matches too. After I look through it if there's anything missing or I'd like to see I'll let you know.

I'm also free to answer any and alkl questions abou the composition of and theory behind our panels. We also have plenty of pictures of the process we used to create them.

As for that video, like Ross said before me, we also have video but then again you can never have too much :D So we'll contact you and we can exchange what footage you have.

Thanks for making an awesome alliance partner, you guys really held your own against two awesome arm-bots out there, and to tell you the truth, we were incredibly pleased when we became your alliance partner - we knew we had a solid team - you guys have a killer robot.

Ps. Awesome brakes and autonomous!
