Re: robot casserole's awesome spin move

that was a great move. i'm lucky enough to be the 'driver' that controls the arm and gripper, and from my place it was super amazing. We watched that video about 10 times that night.

We WERE able to score on all levels (we scored on the middle 2 or 3 times in competition) but moving our arm was slow and it was faster for us to score high. Once when we filled up the top row, we scored one on the middle. Scoring low was just a pain in the butt so we never tried it in Wisconsin.

Unfortunately, we ARE NOT going to Atlanta. :( :( :(

Cool! What kind of drive do you have?

Nothing special. High traction wheels in the back and omni-directional in the front. Only the rear wheels are driven.

Not to dtract from the awesome move, but i cant help wondering how much of that move was amazing driver skills by casserole, and how much of this was the defending robot hitting your omni's. It was obviously good drivers that had the brains to follow through and keep spinning, but i dont know how intentional that was.

In any case, good job, and nice arm. Too bad we won't see you in ATL

I had thought of that, and you're probably right in that it happened beause the defender hit our omni's. But our driver had some amazing driving all day and won two awards from other teams for it, so I don't know if anyone else could have finished it the way he did.

Our drive train is similar to yours and we were not designing to out maneuver. With our arm, we could move away from being defended by others. We could use it to reach over a defender if we were not limited to the 72"x72" box....

We scored over a defending robot in the quarter finals. They didn't seem to enforce the 72" x 72" rule unless our ramps fell down.

thanks, we only scored on the the top rows.

Actually, we did score on the middle row at least once.
(We scored one on the middle in the 53rd qualification match because the top row was already filled)

It moves... just not very fast.
Because our arm was raised and lowered by a support attached to a screw drive, it was much more stable than the arms which had the motor at the pivot point, but it took about 10-15 seconds to go from the top row to the bottom row.
We could score much faster by not moving the arm too far from the top row.

Edit:
If I had actually looked at the bottom corner, I would have seen the second page, in which just about everything I just said was already said...

The Spin move you were able to pull off is a unique characteristic to rear wheel drive, All wheel drive, and center wheel drive can't pull that off easily if not at all. You can get all your robot moving and then BOOM, you just pulled off a powerslide to the bottom of the rack.
