Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

One person on our team (2077) was able to THROW two ringers onto the rack. Once during practice rounds, and another during the qualifying match. We have great video of the one during the qualifying match here. Unfortunately we did not win that one, but the throw was pretty sweet.

Here's the video:

our alliance won a match 2-0 because of a human player's thrown ringer. Our human player also scored 2 or 3 ringers at our first regional.

Our HP scored 3 during qualifying & elims at Florida Regional

I've seen 294's human player successfully do it for half of their matches but ours has been unsuccessful as of yet.

I recall that at St. Louis, only one human player successfully scored a ringer. The announcer actually congratulated them specially on that.

Someone threw a spoiler on as well, but it landed on an empty spider leg!

Our human player was able to score two ringers on the rack during the practice matches, but none during the qualifications. One of the times the tube actually landed on the OTHER side of the rack!:ahh:

murray2077 11-03-2007 00:45

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

Throwing tubes on the rack really seems to be a working strategy.

Another strategy was to throw a tube on the opposing team's ramps to pull the ten point penalty for the other team and to halt a robot from climbing the ramps. I don't think that was very successful in Wisconsin but innovative none the less.

royal_robotix 11-03-2007 00:53

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

coming from a human player, it has been difficult to score ringers. i scored one (it was actually a spoiler) during the practice matches but none after that. the ringer seems to veer off course at the last second.

(as a tip, i found that throwing it as a frisbee but using your back hand to give it the extra push gets it to the spiders. accuracy helps.)

Grant Cox 11-03-2007 00:55

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

At St. Louis, only one made it on during elims (the one mentioned earlier, the MC actually came down to the player station to congratulate him). One or two people got them on during qualifiers (217's human player did once, in the match where we broke in the first 3 seconds), and practice day was basically "throw as much as you can" day so there were definitely a couple thrown then too.

Here in LA we had our HP throw a ringer on successfully in two early qualifiers.

During practice rounds at GLR, one alliance had no working robots, so only the human players reported to the floor. The alliance won 2-0 by a thrown ringer.

not at vcu. there were only a couple of times that spoilers were even on the field. and at vcu, most of the tube scoring was done on your own side, making it pretty much impossible to put a spoiler on it.

For this reason, throwing ringers towards the rack when there are a good number of ringers already on the rack is quite dangerous! The reason is two ringers of the same color on the same spider leg equals no ringers on the spider leg!

To answer the question, I saw a total of probably 5 or 6 ringers scored by human players during GSR (practice matches, qualification matches, and elims). This is actually a pretty low percentage considering how many human players were trying this strategy. So, I would say less than 5% of the thrown ringers were successfully scored on the rack through the act of being thrown.

151 and 166 had the two most successful human players at GSR, in my opinion. Our team hasn't kept track of human player scoring this year, so I don't have any actual statistics.

dcbrown 11-03-2007 10:42

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

Team 166's player at GSR had a particularly consistent flat throw going. She obviously spent a lot of time practicing and the tubes tended not to tilt and veer off like most other throws seen.

got a couple of them thrown onto the rack as a matter of fact. One of them i threw so hard that it landed on the top spider leg on the other side.... :ahh:

Our human player threw one onto the top spider leg to win our first qualifying match 4-2. He also managed to get a couple spoilers over the rack and into the opponents home zone.

i accidentally landed a ringer on a spider that we already had a ringer on. It was one of the few times i got a tube on the rack, and it would've lost us points, but it was only a practice round

At the Finger Lakes Regionals there was a human player from XQ robotics who in the FINAL MATCH in the first 10 seconds of Operator Controlled mode threw one on the top row..everyone was on their feet screaming..opposing team and all. It was INSANE..a ton of cameras got it and there must be a clip somewhere..

There were alot of throwing tubes on in the practice rounds and such, but most teams didn't in the finals due to danger of double ringer-ing..(?) a tube.

If someone has that clip..please post!

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

Our human player has thrown a few on. In one match, he threw one on a ringer that was already scored thus accidently canceling that row.

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

This weekend in Milwaukee I saw a few HP score. I also saw a row of 5 get cut in half. The robots had 5 blue ringers on the middle rack. Then the HP threw a great shot. It landed on the middle spider that already had a blue ringer. So the score fell from 2^5 = 32 to 2^2 + 2^2 = 8 OUCH!

Be careful out there... Throw early and throw well.

One of our human players got four on at the FLR regional... his first match out he got one on then he got another... unfortunatly he scored same place so we didnt get points for either lol, and the second time he got it on making the score 4 to 2 in our favor =) third time we didnt win though.

612's human player practiced for 6 weeks on his throw

he can even do a 360 and throw it
he scored one like that on our rack at the school

maybe he can do it at Chesapeake!

Our HP (Brannden) got consistently 1 in every match, we thought it would be cool if one of our Marketing guys actually did something in the match (I'm lead Marketing and the Mascot). Its amazing that some people get more then 1 in every match!

SSMike 11-03-2007 18:55

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

Our HP scored 4 times on the rack. He was able to get one during practice, 1 the first day and 2 the second day. When he threw the ringer on the rack the first day, that gave us a 4 to 2 lead (That ended up being the final score) with 20 seconds left. He was so ecstatic that he almost jumped out of the designated area. That wouldn't have been good.

Also during the finals, our 2 alliance partners (1450 and 1713) threw 3 ringers on in 2 games.

Human Player Skillz Challenge 07: Be there or get tossed

I don't know if we'll need qualification considering i don't think too many people would do it. Maybe we could have it in an around the world type format, winner gets a golden inner tube.

If by "consistently" you mean more than a single fluke, I might agree. But seeing all matches - practice, qualifications, and eliminations - I could probably count all the thrown ringers scored without removing my shoes and socks. I don't think they were all done by the same person.

At GLR in the eliminations, a human player tossed a ring as a last effort towards the end of the match, Scored on the TOP Row, AND COMPLETED A ROW OF THREE VERTICALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont remember the team number but they were at the wisconsin regional. they had mecanum drive. they scored ringers rather well. and their human player had skillZ with a capital z(amazing shots, everyone hit the rack i believe.).

i think she was wearing a ninja headband dealie from naruto on elimination day.

she had this technique where she bent forward and threw it in a arc around her right side and ended up sorta turned a little to her right side when she was done.

wow

i was really impressed.

I think it was our blue alliance's 2182 Human Player threw one in back to back matches during the Bayou Semi's.

This one bounced off the floor off a robot and then onto a low spider leg...

Those semi's were so cool.

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

I put one on during the practice rounds at GLR and had 1 that fell off in our final Qualification match. It's Definately not easy, and I was horrible when practicing on the practice field because of the low ceiling. Our team is at a great disadvantage as we are in a rotation for HP and we usually either have an ok HP, a horrible HP, or a misguided (by our drive team) HP. Our GLR elim. HP wasn't that good and I was the only HP that practiced.

Sorry but I had to (graciously) vent my disappointment somewhere.

Good Luck

at wisconsin it was one of our alliances human players in the semis that broke a row of 5 by double ringing the middle one we won by two points so one more ringer from the other team would have lost it it was scary.

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

Today at Chesapeake, there was a great human player score in the Finals. 293 and 75 were scoring like crazy on the top row. They were up to about six in a row when out of nowhere comes a ringer from an opponent human player (1748, 612, and 339) that landed on the top row next to the string of six.

The human player ringer didn't make a difference in the outcome of the match, but it was great to watch from the stands. The timing and placement were priceless!

Others who were there might be able to elaborate on this.

Yeah, I was the one who threw that ringer on in the finals at Chesapeake. I saw the other alliance taking control of the top row, (and definitely didn't want them to complete the row), and with the little time remaining I took aim and went for it. With enough power to compensate for the deeper throwing angle needed for the top row...and with some luck...it went on. It felt amazing and the crowd just erupted.

I am a human player for team 1727 and I successfully threw a ringer onto the bottom row at the beginning of the match and had a few near misses. It is not impossibly, but yet improbable for a human player to score this way. The human players job is not to score, but yet to assist their or their alliances robots score.

You should have seen our human player on Thursday.

Throughout the day she managed to score 5 on the rack. In one match, she scored two in a row. And today she scored twice.

We would have lost that third quarter final match without her.

You wouldn't believe how many compliments we got from other teams about our human player.

Uberbots 18-03-2007 00:25

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

our robot, on several occasions during practice hours, was able to fling tubes onto the rack... via a throwing motion of the arm, combined with a pneumatic thruster and releasing the gripper. It was pretty neat, though we never got a video...

We have found it far more efficient for our HPs to just throw the tubes in front of our robot, so we just do that.

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

I was standing on the blue side of the field at the first final match at chesapeake, when i saw the red alliance just about finish a row of 7 on the top spider, when i saw the a tube fly from the blue alliance's side, over the wall, and land straight on the empty leg of that spider. The entire place went crazy, as did i. If they were to give an award for best human player for that regional, he'd win it. Beautiful toss.

Play Ultimate Frisby much?

The HP for Chop Shop 166 is wicked awesome. She must have practiced an hour every day leading up to the BMR. Excellent technique.

You know what's interesting?

She scored once at GSR.

She scored seven total at Boilermaker (including practice matches).

She didn't practice at all between GSR and Boilermaker. She only practiced before GSR.

It was great watching human players change the way they throw the tubes after a day's worth of watching our human player.

Exactly how does she throw it?

She would hold it with one hand on the inside of the tube, one on the outside. She'd use whatever hand was on the inside to give the tube a spin and forward thrust, and whichever hand was on the outside would counteract the right hand and give it some stability, accuracy, and more spin.

I, personally, would hold it with my dominant (right) hand on the inside, and my left on the outside. To start, I'd have my right hand closer to me (on the inside of the tube, and my left hand farther away (on the outside of the tube) so the tube is hanging over my head. I'd quickly rotate my hands counter-clockwise to give the tube spin, and use my arms to throw it forward. I'm not exactly which hand is where, but that's how I would do it.

What's nice about this throw is that it gives the tube an incredible spin and makes it easy for the human player to get the tube over the driver's station. It must be done above the human player's head.

I could probably come up with a diagram or something to help explaining it.

lol i don't even have to explain myself.

yeah i used my dominant hand (right) on the inside. I kind of pinched the outside of the tube with my left hand and sort of whipped it.

But seriously that first day was the most incredible day ever.

2 in a row. ha-cha!

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

Interesting, i think i've tried a similar throw, assuming i understand it correctly, but i found that there is too much spin generated and the tube curves leading to decreased accuracy. Right now i use my dominant right hand on the outside of the tube on the back side and my left hand on the left outer part of the tube. I then use my shoulders and a flick of my wrist to generate rotation. The left hand is able to guide it after release to an extent and it minimizes curve and generally glides straight, thus improving accuracy. But then again i guess it really just depends on the human player and what they feel most comfortable with.

At Wisconsin I made one on the rack, one on our robot (not fun...) and popped one after hit it the top of the wall (embarressing, but it was just a practice match).

Now, I just throw them short of the rack near our robot to pick up. We decided that our robot has a much better percentage at making it than I do.

I'm the driver/human player for team 846. In the 2nd round of our day, I threw a ringer onto the top level of the rack. I recall the announcer said something along the lines of me being the second one to do so that day.

Throwing ringers wasn't a good idea for us. We have BAD aim when it comes to that

At Buckeye, there have been at least 2 successful throws... pretty nifty.

Re: Who has successfully THROWN ringers on to the rack yet?

Throughout VCU and and the first day of Peachtree, I think our human player scored four ringers. Then we had our arm working well and realized that we were faster picking up tubes when our human player fed it to our robot over the wall. So then, we had to stop throwing them over.

But our human player ended up getting really good at throwing them. He's gotten a lot on during our practice field sessions. In fact, on the practice field one time, he scored a ringer, and then on the next one, he put another ringer over it, effectively de-scoring it. But at least it was only a practice match.

My team's human player stuck two on the rack today at Buckeye... I also saw one other.

At SVR, it seemed to happen a few times. I even saw a team or two practicing on the practice rack in the pits.

A lot of ringers went on top of the rack (or into the rack) and off the field, though (but the refs put them back).

Our Human player Jordan McRay was able to get 3 ringers on. 1 in practice and 2 during qualifying matches.

There were many thrown onto the rack in Waterloo. In particular, I think it was the human player from 1503 (? correct me if I'm wrong) who got two on the rack on Friday and at least another two or three today.

Yes, the 1503 human player is scarily good at throwing ringers onto the rack, to the point where it's a significant competitive advantage. There was at least one match where the ringer he scored actually won the match for them. And yes, there were at least a couple other human players who managed to get one or two on - by late Saturday, you could hear the disbelief in Paul Copioli's voice as he announced "...and ANOTHER ringer scored by the human player?".

Team 1444, has had quite a few successful tosses to the rack.
